Thats lovely - first steel string I've heard in a long time that gave me the slight urge to pick mine up instead of my classical..

Well! I was expecting to not like this because I love Stefan's curved top guitars and arch tops so much but, I am happy to say that, while this is significantly different to the curved tops, it is none the less beautiful and I can honestly say I have never heard a better flat top.

It seems to be the best of both worlds, an experiment that clearly paid off.

Jonny, I am intrigued as to how you straddle the classical and steel string world. Having played steel for many years I moved to nylon pre Christmas and haven’t looked back or picked up a SS once - there’s just so much to do on classical. Have you ever felt that way or has it always been a balance for you?

Finding clarity and balance in a steel string to get the best from classical technique has been a life-long quest, Sobells have that, synthesised with character and presence. I also feel there is a steel string soundscape not possible on nylon string and vice versa, I'm always inspired by both. For technique development though, there is nowhere to hide on a classical. Good luck with it.

@@JonnyMoscoGuitar Fair enough, they are different for sure but right now I’d gladly trade both my decent SS for a great classical!

Very nice and a tricky piece that sounds deceptively simple. Given that many believe the domed top is responsible for the legendary clear, projecting "Sobell sound", do you think this is mellowed by the flat top? Many players who are not you or Martin Simpson might appreciate such a Sobell?!

This guitar has a Douglas Fir soundboard, brighter and punchier than my usual German spruce. Jonny has also recorded a piece on an otherwise identical German flat spruce topped guitar, which should show any difference rather better. The fact that the flat-top sound is still so clear indicates that there is more than just the domed top at work, but yes, there is a difference.

@@stefansobell3905 Gosh - a reply "from the horse's mouth"! Thank you! I cannot imagine a guitar "brighter and punchier" than your usual German spruce so that really must be something. Awaiting the next video with great interest.
