I have bipolar type 2 (more depression, mixed episodes and less intense mania) but this is a really good representation of classic bipolar type 1. It's the reason I started watching. I love that the representation doesn't go away and it ebs and flows. Also, we have a high rate of addiction in order to self medicate

i feel like so many people misunderstood debbie, no one in this show is a great person. she’s just a product of her environment. from her kidnapping a baby in the first season to being pregnant as a teen, all the kids turned out differently but are all a product of their environment.

Completely agree and I understand what you’re saying, BUT there are instances past this point where Debbie CHOOSES to act like a POS. I don’t care that she got pregnant cuz I was actually rooting for her during her pregnancy but in the later seasons her character just becomes an asshole.

As someone who is Bipolar Type 1 and struggled as a teen addict the most accurate portrayal ive seen of the disease is Euphoria. However this is a close second. Bipolar disorder is also often misdiagnosed. Both Monica and Ian have type 1. And it is hard to hear something as harsh as "they can be destructive" and "sometimes they cant take care of themseleves". But sometimes, it needs to be voiced. Especially if medication isn't being regularly administered, the delusions can be literally mind bending and you need people to be straight with you. Because you do need help. That doesnt make something wrong with you. That makes you an individual who needs help, which we all do. Just some more than others. Monicas speech here is classic anti med from someone also mid mania spiral, and if its given to someone in a spiral like Ian, they will take that out. And unfortunately its what stops a lot of people from getting help.

Hi. Answering your question about bipolar disorder here. As someone who’s been on medication for 8 years now, i can say it’s VERY realistic as least with my own story with it, i dealt with a lot of things similar to Ian, not so much with his mother tho, but i also went thru the party phase of nothing really matters so fuck it, the hurting yourself with burns to feel things (i put my hand on an iron) the sadness and not feeling okay to get out of bed, the mania of thinking the world is against you and everyone around you wants to hurt you, and the crazy happy euphoria phase where everything is fun and rainbows and you feel pretty much imortal… so idk but for me i related to his character a lot because i’ve been thru a lot of similar things when i wasn’t diagnosed or taking medication for it

mickey and ian are the only reason I watched this show and this show honestly only gets better the more you watch so you should definitely watch all 11 seasons because they are the best and season 7 and 8 are a little boring but 9 10 and 11 are good

I’m just gonna say I really agree with what you said at the end about being invested in these characters so you don’t really care about the production/plot lines getting a little worse because that how I felt, too. Even though the last seasons aren’t as top notch as the first, there’s something about finishing the whole thing and then going back and seeing how far they’ve all come that’s WORTH IT despite all of that. There’s still really beautiful and interesting moments and you really will feel like the quality doesn’t matter by the end of the last season because I think they really do feel a little more real for some reason by then. Anyway, season 6 is honestly one of my favorites so I’m really excited to see what you think!! 😊😊

There are a few issues in the later seasons and I can’t remember which one, but one of the seasons I had to force myself through because I wasn’t fkin with it, just to see how this story ends. The characters are the heart of this show and regardless of how good or bad the writing ended up, it got to a point where I was invested and hooked to see how my characters ended up fairing. 😭😊

Ohh boy this season! Firstly the way you were so conflicted about what Mickey did to Sammi made me laugh because when I first watched it was cracking up laughing over how chill Mickey was about it, but she deserves some kind of payback and I’m glad Mickey got to have a part in that. I am pissed about the ending with him though, that’s all I’ll say on that one Bianca had such a short but great story, she brought out such an interesting part of Frank and I found her super compelling. As for Debbie, others have said it best that she’s a product of her environment and she really didn’t have a female figure to support her - Fiona tried but she had a lot on her plate - and even back in the beginning Debbie’s friendship with the older girls was just a recipe for disaster. I know season 6 and 7 aren’t people’s favourites, and there’s one reason I can think of, but honestly some of the storylines in them are really good, or at least the acting is (I don’t have any experience personally with the stories), especially Lip. I feel like he’s been a bit on the backburner recently and these seasons are where he really shines, Carl too, so I’m excited to see what you think. So looking forward to the next episodes!!

I would honestly argue frank could be an accurate representation of bipolar type 1. My cousin has type 1 as does my father in law and sister in law. They all need to be heavily medicated. Father in law is the only one who wont and frank reminds me so much of him. He moved my husband around so much as a child and didnt ever create stability bc his mind didnt want it. He doesnt openly profess his love for booze like frank does but hes definitely the same type to destroy a new liver. He was afforded so many opportunities and chances and he pisses them all away. For years we thought it was being an addict until we met my husbands sister. She confronted their dad and he confirmed he was diagnosed but and i quote "dont really believe in that shit" if frank had something like this it could explain why even sober he makes the most irresponsible decisions without drinking again even being the goal.

You’re prolly from the UK and that’s the only reason you’re saying that, or maybe you watched that version first, you know nostalgia does blind people sometimes 🤷‍♀️ but the truth is no matter your opinion the US version is better based on views and popularity. I’ve been hearing about shameless for years on social media but never cared to watch it, my mom and sister watched it years ago and this year they decided to rewatch except they also forced me to watch it, I’m on season 8 and it’s a decent show. I was shocked when I heard there was a UK version because all these years I’ve only heard of the US version, that proves that the US version is better.

@@nsdninjaa1792 I am in the UK, and I sort of change my mind all the time on which version I find better. I think the original style and setting resonates more with me as a Brit, but I do think the characters, and their longer running stories in the US one maintain my interest a bit better - especially Ian and Mickey who, in the UK never really happen. Here I think we get the version that many people wished could happen instead of the rather comedy-caricature-Mickey of the original. To be honest, both could have ended at 5 or 6 seasons and it would have been fine. Also, (spoiler alert) too many of the Gallaghers and others in the original vanish in to the aether far too fast. Fiona/Steve = 2 seasons, Kev/V = 3 seasons, Lip = 4 seasons, Debbie = 6 seasons ends very abruptly, Ian = 7 seasons, Liam = 8, and Carl = 9. And then lost interest after Mickey's last episode in S10. I wish we could have had most of them far longer. The UK Debbie in particular was much better than the US one (imo). Even Frank, who is eternal, seems to fade in to a background character in favour of the Maguires as things go on. And that simple reply turned in to a bit of an essay. Sry :)

I really hate Monica at that one. I really do. All these horrible things she did, and the things she didn't do for her chidren as a mother, for me personally, it's all nothing compared to what she did here with Ian. Breaking up scene makes me sobbing every damn time
