Today is my 29th birthday. Today I cancelled my birthday plans and am admitting myself to the hospital for detox so I can begin my sobriety journey. I’ve quit alcohol before no problem but always go back. Things changed this May when my 52-year-old mother passed away with no warning. I turned to drinking HEAVILY but quit very quickly because I recognized that coping that way wasn’t healthy. And then I had my first withdrawal seizure. I keep going back because the fact that I could literally die from withdrawal is terrifying. But then I get back to drinking daily and drinking a lot because it’s a short-term cure for nearly all of my problems. No more. Today is my day. Much love to these people and everyone in recovery. Typing this was difficult because the video has had me sobbing. *Update: I was discharged from the detox unit Friday night and am now one week sober!

I was just to used to her energetic and crazy side, but knowing her story, it is sad that the time I was watching her earlier videos, I thought she had a chill life but now when she revealed her journey, it has changed the narrative and perspective of her. It is not that she is weak or something, it is just that things aren't often like the way we see it. Stay strong Madison! Congratulations on overcoming your addiction.

@TheMissjayelle2 жыл бұрын
"Well the good thing is your daughter is young and she's not going to remember that..." Actually, that's not necessarily true. Children are more aware than you might think and regardless of whether or not she "remembers," the body remembers trauma. That's why it's important to repair damage as soon as you're aware of it. Even after the fact. Young children are particularly susceptible to trauma. Obviously we don't know the whole story and I'm proud of that mother for getting sober for her daughter. Childhood trauma isn't always preventable. Suffering, however, can be. I hope both mom and daughter are able to explore and process what they've been through.
@sophiam.2395 Жыл бұрын
Yep I thought that was a little off too. I understand the sentiment of letting go of guilt but also there will be a lasting impact unless the trauma is addressed early on. Just because you don't remember something doesn't mean it wouldn't shape your brain development. I think she could have said that it's not too late to make big changes and become a better parent

There definitely is. I grew up in a batshit environment with an alcoholic mom, and have lots of alcoholics in my family. I tried so hard to be a moderate, "normal" drinker to prove to myself that I wasn't like them. Even so, the depressant aspect of it wreaked havoc on me. I finally decided to stop battling myself to prove something that didn't matter when my dog was diagnosed with cancer and I didn't want to numb out or miss anything. I made the deal to stop til he was gone, and to my great surprise, when I had a glass of wine ten months later, I hated how it made me feel. That was 14 years ago, and I am happy every day that I left it behind. There are different programs and approaches, so look for one that works for you. Future you will be grateful for it. 😊

Nice I liked this episode. I'm a recovering addict myself. Haven't been to a meeting in a minute but watching this makes me miss those bonds you have with other addicts. I feel a lot of shame talking to most people and don't really open up about my past in fear of being judged. Like I'll get invited out to drinks from co-workers and just say nah i don't want to drive out there instead of just saying I don't drink because I'm afraid they'll ask why. Maybe I'll add this to my new years resolutions to work on that

Today I am 4 1/2 years clean - prior to my last three week relapse having thrown away another four years clean then, prior to being a chronic relapser… and I really appreciate what the one guy said about not being sober while smoking weed for the simple fact that smoking weed brought me back out each time I relapsed. Like him I am above all for harm reduction - But for anyone who has battled addiction with harder drugs, I strongly advise against substituting with ANY possible addictions, as even those that are harmless - Open the flood gates to that which tried so desperately to take your life away. Prayers to any out there still suffering ♥️

As somebody who has a large family of addict and alcoholics, including myself, I always used to discredit California sober people because they’re not “really” sober. I still think it’s dangerous for an addict to do any recreational drugs, but if weed stops them from doing meth or cocaine or heroin etc., I commend them. It’s such a personal journey, and nobody should judge anybody.

The hardest part about addiction/relapse in my opinion isn’t the actual craving of the substance(s) at hand, but rather this FoMo that builds up as a consequence of your decision not to partake in certain activities where substance use (or abuse) is also prevalent, like going to a concert, wreaking havoc with friends on campus, chasing tail etc.
@Bucatini7212 жыл бұрын
that part with the mother who got sober for the kid, you can tell that the person across from her really felt that, especially seeing that they got into drugs because of that childhood trauma. i havent spoken to my mother for years because of this exact thing, she never took that route. im debating if sending this video to her would get the message through.

@@Topaz_Estrella there's NO evidence to show that not smoking weed is better. Also, what constitutes as "sober" clearly varies, as the video shows. I love the vast representation and vulnerability of the people sharing. I feel like the music behind the conversation could have been better picked. It doesn't quite fit the mood of the video and is almost distracting. These people are great, I appreciate them sharing their journey.

Was it just me or did the two guys have eyes for each other?? The black guy definitely was feeling him 🥰
