Another great video about the JKs 👍😅 I recently uploaded a video about the first 3 months of our 48V Victron Solar island system with the JK inverter BMS. Unfortunately, there was also 1 complete system failure😏 My conclusion about the JKs so far: Good BMS with a lot of potential, but there is still a lot of room for improvement in terms of functionality. And the very poor support from JK for the normal end customer is more than disappointing🙄 Because let's be honest: Not every end user has almost 100.000 subscribers on KZbin and therefore gets halfway decent support when something doesn't work perfect, right? 😏😂 Finaly I prefer to leave the SOC calculation to the Victron SmartShunt, because the JK's simply cannot do it reliably🤷🏼‍♂️ Greetings, Ronny

@@easypowerwall We were unable to fully charge our LiFePo4 blocks for several weeks after we started charging our new plug-in hybrid with the Victron Wallbox😅 As a result, the LiFePo4 cells in both blocks no longer reached 3.40V per cell (the balancer was set to 3.40V to start with). As a result, over several weeks, one cell in each block moved towards 2.60V. And then both JK inverter BMSs switched off. And of course, due to the parallel operation of the 2 JK BMS, we did not receive any alarm messages on the Cerbo GX or in the Victron VRM portal (unfortunately we do not have the latest firmware version yet)🤷🏼‍♂️ We have now set the Balancer to 3.20V so that it starts balancing the cells earlier. Fortunately, another 5 kW of Trina Vertex solar power will be added in a few weeks. Then we should no longer have the problem with fully charging the blocks🤞😂

I've been abusing my battery to the max twice now, I build it along side Andy's 1.0 pack, so to give a timeline.they are in a harsh environment, very cold winters and relatively hot in the summers( harz Germany), I came back to my batteries about a month ago, the solar panels where completely covered with overgrowth, the s16 pack voltage was 4,2 volts, les than 0.27v per cell. I had to bypass bms and charged them to 2,5 volts with a lifepo4 charger, when they hit 2,5, I moved the charger to the correct side of the bms, and upped the amps to 30, than, while being there and checking the cells for abnormalities continuously, I added about 70 ah of solar. They charged all the way up with no significant ballance difference, but I did lose about 10% capacity. I am very positively impressed with these cells, I'm building a new pack witch I intend to not abuse in the same way, but I will leave this pack working and follow its progress.

When I started with my DYI battery (all your fault Andi!😅) I also had the peukert and efficiency at something else than 1. That resulted in a 20% SOC jump after 3 months of not charging to 100%. Then I set the parameters to 1 and this February when the battery got full again after 3 months the SOC jumped from 97% to 100%.

On the topic of simplicity, I found an inverter with built in mppt solar charge controller, if I have that and a BMS, why would I need any of that Victron stuff? I like pretty graphs but I think the inverter and JK BMS have apps so I should be able to get all of the relevant data without too much trouble. If my solar array and batteries are sized appropriately for my electric usage and the pack never shuts off, I think I just have to do a bit of scheduled maintenance every 4-6 months to ensure the numbers aren't too far off.

There seems to be a lot of fuss about this JK controller and I need to understand what is so good about it, is there something that our good old Seplos cannot deliver perhaps? Appreciate your opinion 🥰Greetings from 🇬🇧

Oh, yes, the JK inverter BMS is far ahead of any other BMS in this class. The programming, charge cycle features (absorption, float,...) and programmable dry contacts are something no one else does. I am in contact with Seplos and we discussed the possibility of lowering the voltage after the battery is fully charged. The engineer agreed and had other customers requesting that feature. That was in March though and I have not heard back from them. If they don't design their own software, they cannot compete with JK for example which can deliver a new FW within 30min.

If you don't have a DC system, the Multiplus is excellent at estimating the SOC. When properly set up to communicate with charge controllers, it provides highly accurate readings, typically within 1-2% of a JBD BMS without communication. While a shunt can be useful if you're frequently adjusting capacity or want to manually adjust the SOC, it's not strictly necessary in most cases. For controlling AC-coupled microinverters using the TUYA app, a more efficient approach is to integrate Node-RED with MQTT to turn them off as needed. This allows you to avoid relying solely on frequency shifting, which is better kept as a fail-safe. Frequency shifting is not ideal for many appliances and can introduce unnecessary complications. It will be good to see you do more testing and try different things.

I run 4 of the JKs with 0.6A for five years already - no issues. By the way, I recently did an experiment to see if I can find bad cell connections in multiple parallel packs. I did that by plotting the cell delta per pack over time. This shows an oscillation on the delta in the pack that has a bad terminal connection - there is a graph in the forum. Maybe something to check with your data on that middle shelf pack - could be interesting. Also, measuring state of charge with a Coulomb counter (shunt) over time when you have a range between 0 and 50A going in the battery and which can fluctuate a lot when using solar is not an easy thing to do...

Andy, I can't remember what you said a long time ago when I first started watching you. You dismissed cutting down trees, and I understand your views on that. But what did you say about using the wind to generate power at night and in the winter when the solar drops off. Also, another site I watch "just have a think" mentioned on one of his blogs (DC to DC charging), that the power from the solar is DC, and you could use that to directly power your cars. Becuase you lose 13% of power converting it to AC, and then your car converts it back to charge the batteries. So, could you charge the cars directly with DC from the solar? Thanks for your Mr blue sky productions.

There is pretty much no wind over here. We are in a valley and apart from the occasional light breeze, it's not worth doing ins this location. I rather install more solar which is far more efficient in this sunny spot. Car charging from DC solar directly will not be possible to use at home. There are far too many regulations and costs involved. It all sounds good in theory, but it is not practical. It's like all these new battery chemistries they promised coming out soon. We have not seen any of that except sodium... AC charging the vehicle is totally fine. 10% loss is a great efficiency and, in my opinion, it is not worth chasing another 3-4% gain in such a case.

I did ask at the time to expand on this, and other members as well, and you said you will re visit this, as it needs a entire video to it. I guess you changed your mind with this one, as long as you got proper SCC short circuit current interruption on each bank for paralleling, there is no issue. Each bank is managed by its own bms, and have a class T fuse or a breaker with 10ka plus. I use outback DC breakers on each bank, rated for 10ka.

Recently I've noticed the Victron SOC being inaccurate at the lower SOC. Here in the UK recently the sun has disappeared and my two 24V 280Ah batteries have been heavily discharged. I have my system set up to prioritise solar and the grid only kicks in to charge them when their voltages drop into the steep part of the discharge curve. They did this several times last night but Victron thought the SOC was around 35% Sometimes the charger kicks in during the day due to voltage drops caused by heavy loads from power tools and the kettle etc but overnight I don't have these voltage drops and so the cells are actually in that steep part of the discharge curve which I would consider to be a lot lower SOC than Victron's 35% guess. When I look at the Ah graph on VRM it is evident that with each charger cycle the graph steps up indicating that either the discharge or charge amps in/out (or both) are not being accurately recorded. My guess is that the Peukert calculation is the reason for this step in the graph but no different setting seems to fix it. I just don't think that Victrons Peukert setting and charge efficiency setting will ever allow totally accurate recording of SOC and so after a long time without a 100% reset we get this horrible SOC drift. I had the same problem on a previous boat with a Victron BMV and shunt and lead acid batteries.

I integrated the jk b2a20s20p bms into the HA with a 16 MB31 battery from EVE with the help of the esp32 uni module. it works ok, but I think I discovered a problem with the bms, which when there are float voltages around, when the battery is full, it no longer correctly indicates the current neither when charging nor when discharging, therefore also the power. I calibrated the bms, when the battery is not in the float state it indicates correctly! I think that my hybrid deye inverter introduces pulses into the battery to keep it in float and the bms reads them wrong! I measured one at the same time with the clamp-meter and the current indicated by the bms in the float is incorrect!

I have found with mine, I have a few different batteries with their own bms, seplos and batrium wm5. I found the problem with the total shunt count is the bleed from the bms to getting accounted for in the total shunt. The seplos is the older version, I haven't done a full charge since adding all the batteries together, so it will be interesting seeing the difference.

I had a defective outback charge controller send 140 volts from the panel straight to the batteries. JK BMS could not protect against voltage that high and it fried the batteries. New rule, I always install an additional battery voltage protection unit when using solid state BMSs.

Hi Andy, thanks for demonstrating that also you click the wrong confirm buttons ;o) BTW. Maybe you try another test. I observed my SmartShunt two years now and in my installation its drift is propotional to the time since last sync. In numbers it means that it drifts 0,78% SoC per day (which is equal to a 100mA "hidden load" - maybe its own uncounted consumption?). For average usage it is extremely accurate. Only if I put unusual loads to the system the factor slightly changes. So maybe this is worth to investigate. Beste Grüße aus der alten Heimat!

I'm reading so many ppl have problems with deep disharge and under voltage in their battery packs... I can't believe how you can permit that. My Victron multiplus ALWAYS setting up to recharge my battery from grid 5% points if go down a certain threshold. If you have big packs ( 15+kwh ) you MUST have a backup to keep your battery charged over a minimum threshold, that's so inexpensive compared to lost/damage a battery pack

I have 3x JK BMS here on my LFP cells, but SOC is totally sucks with them. Changed all settings to your settings you got. And still no go to get a 100% SOC. I made a reset again, so it's recalculating again, but it gives the voltages and an percentage. Today again the voltage was good but the SOC was totally sucks again. Installed a shunt yesterday, i recharged all LFP and got an estimate again. But now one battery is claiming its empty and undervolting. I contacted JK, because i have scheduled charge, so i should be fine. But nothing of that is true and JK is not even responding. Also noticed they gave an EOL status to version 14 BMS and now running version 15. So no more updates from them....

Hi Andy. I did many test with 50Ah What I did. I did full charge of my one cell to 100% . Rest about 8 hours .Discharge (minus 2000mAh) . Rest 8 hours. Next step I started to charge with 0.2C current in bulk mode. When cell richeade 3.45V the battery was fully charged even without any obsortion. I did many and many similar test. I did charge to-3.45-3.47V obsorption time vas from 30s to 2min(without any rest). I using of EBC-A40L Electronic Load Battery Capacity Tester. So if your lowest cell got 3.45-3.47V about 2min your all the cells are 100% charged and any balancing is no nesesary at all as all cells are charged to 100%. I would change 2% of tail to 20% and reduce the time to 30s. If you don't trust or my explanation is unclear :D :D ... Discrage the battery (take off let say 5% off capacity) and charge the cell and you will see when battery takes back the 5% it would be good for your next Video.

Did anybody think about the Cerbo or Smart Shunt is reporting an incorrect voltage and that is why it seems to have SOC drift? I can't seem to get any meter (Victron stuff too) to agree at the second decimal point.

For smart shunt settings, I found the Victron suggested parameters were terrible. I wound up changing the "Charged detection time" to 3 minutes, the "Charged Voltage" to just below the charge target voltage, and, most importantly, I reduced the "Current Threshold" to 0.10A. That seems to avoid false 100% SOC reset triggers due to weather conditions. -Matt

WEIRD JK BMS OBSERVATIONS ABOUT BALANCING Firmware 15.30 After upgrading I have recognicing today again that for of my cells which had hit the over voltage protection of 3.62 Volt had then been balanced down to 3.594 V where 3.59 would be the OVP recovery point, but then the weird thing happened and the voltage increased over 3.600 V simply by balancing in the wrong direction. The celll voltage difference is also increasing from 255 mV to over 266 mv and now 5 minutes later without charging the balancer has increased the voltage over 3.615 V and I am talking not about 1 random cell but 6 cells are now over 3.615 V. That is competely weird behaviour and I have no clue what is causing this except the firmware update. And then it turn again the balancing direction which mean that now the voltage of the highest voltage cells are reduced by balancing. Sentenced typed and I hit what ? below 3.6 V again And the deviation is down to 244 mV within 1 minute or so Now below 3.58 V and deviation below 228 mV. I do not get it - I had turned floating mode off and had reachted the Ah counter reset point to full capacity and from there on it was really weird this rollercoaster of balancing first in the right direction and then into the opposite directino increasing the deviation. Quite scary to see that cause it was not charging anymore. Homeassistant logged 0 W charging / discharging.
