Thank you for this. I just finished a 36 hours rest in a Boveda 75%RH calibration bag and the hygroset II was reading 3%RH too high. I went to adjust the knob and it didn't do shit. I thought, oh ffs this one is broken too (had 2, threw one away yesterday because it was stuck on 59% and would not budge). But after watching your video, I now understand how to adjust this thing. I came right close to throwing this pos in the trash Lol

They are very good devices. Just temperamental to get spot on. I am salt testing mine now. It’s been out of rotation a long time as I am just now starting back to my smokes after a few years being away. If you get these spot on or close they are very good. At least my memory says that.
@SoCalCigars
@SoCalCigars 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly right. I tend to calibrate every 3-6 months. I do notice they can drift off a tiny bit. Once you get them set...they are at least staying in a range that's acceptable. Enjoy your smokes after your break! And thanks for watching!!

See, mine actually shows a higher humidity at the bottom than top for some reason. Always has. So I just rotate my sticks about once a week top to bottom, bottom to top, etc, cause the middle usually holds pretty firm. I looked into fans but they all were either way more than what I was trying to do or not enough so I settled on rotation lol Good stuff.
@SoCalCigars

I am the opposite for sure...the top is higher. I tried the fan, but it didn't seem to work. Unplugging is the only thing I found to even it all out.

The dial is very touchy for sure. It takes a subtle hand to get it dialed in. But they do drift over time...nice they can be recalibrated.

I noticed you have quite a few cigars that still have their wrapper on. I believe that should be removed or the humidity won't help them much.
@SoCalCigars
@SoCalCigars 2 жыл бұрын
The wrappers are porous and let humidity in and out. They are best kept on to protect the cigars from damage when hitting against each other. This is from Cigar Aficionado: "True cellophane is a natural substance made of cellulose, the main component in the cell wall of a plant. A machine makes tubes of cellophane, and workers in a cigar factory slip individual cigars within the tubes. The cellophane provides extra protection and slows the drying process of a cigar."

What hygrometers are you using that fit the holes in the drawers of the Whynter CHC-172BD? They look like the HygroSet II Round Digital Hygrometer that I saw on Amazon.The analog hygrometers that came with my Whynter 172DB were unusable from the very beginning. They were at 65% and 70% respectively after being in a sealed ZipLock bag with a cap full of moistened salt overnight, yet when I tried to calibrate them by turning the screw on the back that tiny little bit, the spring attached to the needle kept slapping the needle back to BELOW zero, despite the fact that the humidity level inside my home is between 68% and 76%.Thanks!
@SoCalCigars
@SoCalCigars 4 жыл бұрын
I use the Hygro-Set. You can get them here www.cigarsinternational.com/p/hygro-set-adjustable-digital-hygrometer-hygrometers/1438385/. I just pop out those crappy ones they come with and put this in its place. I had to lightly sand the hole to make this one fit. The best thing about these is that you can calibrate them.

I just got one of these hygrometers, The big knob (#3) won't turn and click. Is there a trick? Gotta push in or pull out while turning?
@SoCalCigars
@SoCalCigars 4 жыл бұрын
Mike, that knob should just turn without much effort. You shouldn't have to push or pull it. I am wondering if perhaps you received a defective one. Maybe use a little more force to get it to free up...if that doesn't work I would have it replaced. Bummer to have to go through that hassle.

You can buy a "calibration kit" from Boveda that is very reliable. If you are at all concerned about a bad calibration...that may be your best bet to rule out any error.
@micway71
@micway71 3 жыл бұрын
Follow Bryan Glenn’s recipe: use a larger cap. Like a seasoning top. Pour 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon of salt in the cap. Then 1 teaspoon of water in the cap. It should be a slush. Use a smaller container like a quart zip lock. In 8-24 hrs your device should be 75% or close. Adjust as necessary.
@NickiTerantino1011
@NickiTerantino1011 Жыл бұрын
You needed to move them both 3 clicks exactly and put them back in the bag for another 6 hours to make sure your adjustment worked accurately. It was being over adjusted here and they won't be reliable the way you over adjusted them.

I'm guessing your not getting quite as good of air circulation since you've added the extra drawers. But I'm liking those drawers. Will order at least one when I get this unit. Good videos by the way.
@SoCalCigars
@SoCalCigars 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike. I will say that there is less circulation as the only fan is in the very back and is now behind two drawers. That being said, my humidity seems to be even more stable than before. I may contribute that to having more cedar in the unit now. During the colder months we have had in California, I have had the unit unplugged for the past two months and the temp and humidity are stable at about 68/68. So I would say there has been no ill affects by adding all drawers. I do think thought that this now really makes cigar rotation more important though. Appreciate you watching!

Without putting them back in the bag to recheck you can't tell if it is calibrated correctly.
@SoCalCigars
@SoCalCigars 4 жыл бұрын
You are correct. You can put them back and wait to verify the new setting you made is accurate. And that's a great point. But for me, I have done it so many times that I feel comfortable with taking them out of the bag and adjusting and calling it a day. At the worst, I may be 1 point off on the Rh. But you are very correct, to be sure, adjust and put back in the bag and verify. Thanks for the great point and for checking out my video.

I have done it while keeping it in the bag as well. I just figure by taking it out and adjusting immediately, you might be off a point or two at the most. If that is a concern. I would leave it in the bag and adjust it from the outside through the plastic.
