The wave at the beginning of the video are right in front of the point. The real break is a bit north and breaks back in to the cove. It can still close out but (usually) just pushes you back in the cove. Not up in to the bluff

@williammartin284213 күн бұрын
That break doesn't seem to hold that size swell or just that swell direction?
@michaelburk917110 күн бұрын
That video was a bit confusing. The wave at the very beginning is outside and a bit south of the point. It's breaks on big rocks then straight in to the bluff. The later waves are around to the north and break like a point back in to the cove.

We are having a huge swell in Ecuador and Peru right now, my question is what exact date was this filmed? Due to the 1st of January we are having the new moon spring tide and already we are having problems on the borderline coast in erosion. We have high tide now at 2.3m and swells up to 4m, and on Jan 1 thru Jan 3, we have spring tide up to 2.9 meters with ...this swell that hit San Diego?? would like to know when this was filmed due to 5 to 6 days later we should receive this swell. Thank you.

FWIW, cove is where people who want it smaller than the swell go. If you want better big wave clips check the end of Sunset Cliffs blvd (I bet indicators was breaking this swell), Wind and Sea, make the hike to Blacks, Swami's, etc.etc.etc. You filmed the JV squad. No shade, they paddled out and I didn't. JS you can get better footage elsewhere.

What I don't get is down near the Bird Rock rock end of the peninsula there's a winter big swell only left wall I won't name (I know you know the one I"m talking about) that holds size much better than The Cove. Yet (at least when I lived and surfed there) always had at worst 1/4 the crowd that The Cove gets.
@TheMemo65916 күн бұрын
@@muttonbuster Combo of people running from breaks that maximize swell size and local-ism at certain breaks I'd imagine. "The big wave left near birdrock" is certainly one of those locals giving strangers grief breaks.
@muttonbuster15 күн бұрын
@@TheMemo659 I think another couple of factors are that spot definitely happens less often than The Cove and breaks WAY the hell out there. It always seemed to me that The Cove was where you surfed if wanted a big audience watching you make a drop (quickly followed by a section you can't make or mush).....while the other you're likely to have no one watching you getting a long, feathering workable wall.

why is everyone dropping in so early on the wave? am i wrong? don't want to be a backseat driver or surfer here... but it's definitely noticeable. *also i don't know this wave, perhaps this is a big swell and no one even locals know how to ride it and are figuring it out. educate me people. edit: also, FINALLY some great rides towards the end.
@jackcohen185419 күн бұрын
This is big for san diego. This wave probably breaks once, maybe twice a year.
@matthewkelleher346717 күн бұрын
When do you think they should drop in? You stand up as early as possible and try to get out in front of the close out. None of these large waves were make able. They were close out beach break. Even on the point breaks at La Jolla

I clicked on this expecting a surf video and I get a clown school. This is average winter surf in Santa Cruz. And no one in the video knows how to duck dive? Everyone just hops off and lets the leash take care of it all? Town full of wow-now special Princess surfers.
