You generally get a 5 minute major on both sides for a fight, where neither team is shorthanded and both men are back in 5 minutes, unless one gets injured. You see them talking first a lot because if only one drops his gloves, he is the only one that gets a penalty, so they both agree to it, and if one backs out and draws a penalty, everyone on the ice knows he is a bitch. The refs only let the fight go on if two willing participants square up. Once it no longer seems like two willing participants, they break it up. There is actually a whole section of rules for fights, haha. Hockey is amazing.
@TooBokoo
@TooBokoo 4 жыл бұрын
And furthermore, refs stand back and let them tire themselves out, usually until they fall on each other and then the refs pile on to break it up. They're not getting in between two pissed off players and catching a fist. That's why they let them go at it.

"They are commentating the fight" Yea, it's part of the sport. Not as much nowadays but back in the 90s and 2000s, fighting was a way to keep you goal scorers safe from big hitters. If someone tried to step up and hit one of your goal scorers, the coach would throw an enforcer (yes, they have a specific name for fighters in the nhl) and get him to beat the brakes off the guy who tried to hit your star player. It's part of the sport and adds entertainment. Coaches will also put enforcers out to start a fight to try and flip momentum to their advantage in the game

Joshua Lewis - That was the most intense game I’ve ever seen. Claude Lemieux got pummeled by McCarty, Roy was cut by Vernon and most of the Avs’ left bloodied. All because of Lemieux’s cheap shot on Kris Draper the previous year. It was the best retribution I’ve seen in sports. For those new to hockey; search for this fight along with anything Bob Probert or Joe Kocur. Also, Unwritten rules of hockey: Fighters/Tough guys never fight the skill players. If someone gets knocked down/out from a punch, the fight is over. Never shoot a puck into opponents goal after the play has been whistled dead. Search for any of the above or hockey fights in general. Enjoy a KZbin wormhole!

@Rufio nowadays? Back in the day you didn’t even need to touch the goalie, just be in the slot somewhere when the puck was in the crease and sticks would get up and it would get pretty ugly, I played Jr A between 95-99 and it was brutal some games, The last year I played they made a rule if you fought in the final 10 min of 3rd period you got suspended for the next game cause every game would eventually turn into a fight fest at the end. It was one of the funnest times in my life!

99% of the time, if you touch a goalie, you better be willing to scrap. there are occasional exceptions to that, but those are only if it was visibly accidental, and even that isn't a free pass. i can think of one instance where the guy "blew a tire" driving the net and plowed the Colorado goalie. the players were more forgiving than the ref. one of the players said "nobody is saying you did it on purpose" to the guy, and the ref gave a penalty believing intentional contact

Adam, you have to understand the intensity of the game of hockey, when played at a high level. You have 10 men, huge men, flying around at 40 km/hr, in an area less than half the size of a soccer field, after one object, the puck. These guys make millions of dollars to get that puck, in a full body contact job. With sticks in their hands. You bet there is going to be physical conflict. In the old days it was a deterrent to anybody taking cheap shots or trying to injure, or as punishment for actions that a 2 minute penalty didn't get the point across. Don't do that again. These days, because of a wider audience that doesn't know what this game encompasses, they are shocked just like you. It's easier to understand if you understand the history of the game where there used to be a ring of people around the rink. That's all. Personal and team honour was a personal thing. Now television, and all of the sudden, soccer and badminton players and mommies have an opinion.

I guess when you’re used to watching soccer with players on foot playing on an enormous field, that hockey would seem fast and violent. As someone who started walking on Monday and on Friday was learning to skate, hockey is just part of growing up Canadian. You’re responsible for the 360* around you at all times. The fighting is just part of the strategy. Many players have been recruited specifically for their fighting abilities. I miss the old days when the fighters would punch each other in the face until they were tired out. None of this one punch stuff.

The Islanders player who won the fight was calling for the paramedics to come help his fallen opponent within a second of him hitting the ice. I used to work in a store where a decent number of NHL players for the Islanders would shop and the Islanders enforcer Matt Martin was by far the kindest and most gracious player I've ever encountered. Love your reactions. Everyone got a 5-minute major for fighting. Fighting needs to exist in the NHL, because when large men are flying down the ice at 45 kilometers an hour, a cheap shot could be career-ending and potentially life-threatening, as you rightly pointed out the blades on everyone's feet and the ice being as unforgiving as concrete. Knowing you'll get your lights punched out keeps the really bad cheap shots at bay, for the most part. It'd work well in footie too. Take a dive and hold your shin like you've been shot and you'll get shit-kicked, and the guy who beats you will go sit on the side for 5 minutes, then be right back out..

Hockey is pretty much taking the concept of soccer and making it appeal to Americans and Canadians. For one thing, the field of play is a lot smaller, so things are happening almost all the time. You've got big, tough men with blades on their feet and sticks in their hands sliding around in a frozen arena of pain. You've got a sport where not only is fist fighting allowed, its actually strategic and teams can have a special player whose _entire role_ is to pick a fight. Because according to us, soccer is fine, but it could use more violence and less traction.

It includes multiple whole team brawls at center ice, goal keepers fighting, players leaving their skates to make leaping attacks, and all for revenge of a dirty hit the year before. The Colorado Avalanche of the late 90s were a collection of the worst people in sports and the Redwings were considered a soft European team that just happened to include about half of the Russian Red Army team at that point. It's a classic. Well worth watching the entire thing if you can find it.

Lol, love your reaction. I am a HUGE Pittsburgh Penguins fan. The fight between the goalies is the best. The fans live for these fights. :-)

You should do a video of the NHL and WHA fights from the 1970’s

When it comes to the goalie fight at the end, it started because a player hit the goalie. As a defenseman, or really any player will tell you, if you hit my goalie, intentionally or not, you're getting beat up. Fighting in hockey is pretty much a requirement. You have to get that aggression out, or else it will get even nastier. Thats why the ref's let the boys go at it, and when its done they take care of it. The evolution of fighting in hockey is a long one. I play, and I've even referred. It's a mutual understanding. I suggest watching "the blood game" between the Detroit red wings and the Colorado avalanche back in the late 90s. Prompted by the hit on chris Draper the year before.

I love watching these videos and seeing your reactions. There is a saying “I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.”

Yes, watch hockey. It's better live. Arguably the best sporting event to attend.

Adam you crack me up. If there is no fight in a hockey game it’s not hockey. I’m from Montreal Quebec in Canada and hockey is our sport .

Yeah one minute could be watching a hockey game and the next you could be watching a boxing match and I would like to see another reaction video to the NHL. Some of my suggestions to you would be videos on NHL dekes (best shootout goals) or hardest hits of the NHL 17-18

I played in the Industrial League in Windsor which was a league where factory workers played hockey for recreation, the rules allowed 3 fights in a game and the 3rd fight you were tossed out of that game and 1 additional game - it was awesome we had a south paw who was our enforcer!

You think this is terrifying? Derek Boogaard was 6'7" and around 270lbs. His hands were the size of your head. He would break people's helmets when he punched them. RIP
