Everyone who plays the field in baseball also bats on offense. Except for some pitchers. Bo played football, baseball and also ran track in college where he ran a 10.3 sec 100 meters .

Another thing that's amazing about Bo was that he never had a chance to get in "football shape", because NFL training camps start in late July, in the middle of baseball season. So Bo would be playing Baseball and wouldn't be able to start football until a month into the regular NFL season(Regular season football starts at the beginning of September, but Baseball doesn't end until the end of September). Even though Bo excelled at both sports, I believe he said Baseball was his favorite sport.

Maybe I am blinded by the glory and nostalgia, but I don't even think Bo Jackson hit is prime before he was injured. Which is heartbreaking. But even still it was amazing to watch him. Easily one of the greatest athletes I have ever seen. His strength, speed, and agility was outstanding.

Just a point of clarification for baseball, EVERY defensive position player that is not the pitcher (for simplification I won’t go into separate league rules) also bats in their half of the inning. Bo Jackson was one of three starting outfielders (usually left field) on the Royals. They are the players who patrol the wide open spaces of the outfield behind the infield and in front of the wall. Especially in Kansas City with its HUUUUGE outfield, they generally had to be very fast, very athletic, with a powerful arm to throw accurately from up to 400 feet away! Bo Jackson had ALL of these skills at the highest level EVER seen, AND had the power with the bat to hit moonshot home runs AND the speed to run the bases like the best in the game. He was, quite literally great at EVERYTHING…and that’s not even considering ALSO being an all star NFL football player where he was ALSO a transformational talent. It’s no wonder this guy was one of the first nationwide media icons, featuring in multiple national advertisement campaigns. It’s just a terrible shame that his career was cut so short because of a football injury he never recovered from. Injured Bo trying to play baseball was so sad…because we had all become used to Super Bo…

@GoddyGE Christian Okoye played football in the same city that Bo Jackson played baseball, at the exact same time. Sadly, Bo Jackson played football in a rival city. Both men were impossibly big and fast. Bo, however, grew up playing football and baseball and had a truly instinctual feel for both games. There are "5 tools" that baseball players have referring to their defensive and offensive abilities, and Bo was off the charts on all 5 coming into professional baseball. He also won the Heisman Trophy in college, naming him the best college football player in the country. Bo Jackson was quite possibly the greatest American athlete of the century, and the hip injury seen in the video kept him from having the statistics to prove it. There is a great ESPN documentary on Bo Jackson called "You Don't Know Bo: The Legend of Bo Jackson" that you should watch if you can find it.

In baseball, there are 9 positions on defense: pitcher, catcher (the guy behind the plate), 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, shortstop (all in the infield), left field, center field and right field (all in the outfield). When Bo Jackson robbed that home run, he was playing left field. He was an outfielder, meaning he played all 3 outfield positions. He also hit. All the players on the field hit too. Only ones that don't are pitchers, who have a designated hitter to replace them in the lineup.

in the states at the high school level, football takes place at the start of school in the fall, basketball is played during the winter, then in the spring baseball is played, most elite athletes play all three or two and do track and field.....in the pro's football and baseball do overlap just a bit, the beginning of pro football season (september) is the last month of baseball season, and if your baseball team makes it to the playoffs it will extend into the second month of pro football season...this will probably not be tried ever again precisely because what happened to Bo with his injury, was a risk other sports did not want to take with these open sports contracts

Bo Jackson was a outfielder. Outfielders play outside the ‘infield’ & need to be able track balls hit far to catch them or throw them back infield. All fielders are required to bat including the pitcher(Some leagues a designated hitter can take the pitcher’s at-bats instead)

he played both football and baseball growing up and as an adult, as did many of the top tier athletes. many also played basketball as well as football and baseball. many of these top tier athletes also get drafted by the nba, mlb and nfl and will decide on one of them. it takes a very special and god gifted human to have the stamina and drive to play 2 sports because they then have no time off to let their body heal from the punishment received from the 1 sport.

Bo played running back in the NFL, and played the position of left field in baseball. All in and outfielders go up to bat. The pitcher sometimes goes up to bat as well, depending on if they are in the American or National league, and depending on which park they are playing in, from a widely hated rule in the AL, called the designated hitter rule, in which the pitcher can have a substitute batter take his position in the batting lineup.

Bo had more straight ahead speed than Barry Sanders. Bo was one of the fastest RB in NFL history. Barry had far more moves, was quicker, and could maintain his speed out of his cuts as well as or better than anyone ever in NFL history. Bo was bigger, stronger, and easily as agile than Barry. If he would have remained healthy IMO he would have been the greatest RB in NFL history.

@@GoddyGE I some ways, but again, Barry was a better and quicker cutter, and could better maintain his speed through those cuts. Barry then could make multiple cuts within a tighter frame than Jackson. Bo would rather run over or around you than fool you with his moves. Barry was also just as tough to tackle down low as Bo because Barry had tremendous thighs.

The only position that doesn't have to necessarily hit is the pitcher. All the other positions in baseball have to hit. Bo Jacksom played MLB and NFL at the same time.
