Adam, a majority of those pitches were at least 90 mph. And i would be lying if i said no one got at least a fractured skull from some of those hits. The MLB only put mandatory plastic helmets on batters within the last 40 years. But even today's helmets aren't entirely protecting you from a concussion due to the energy from the ball being transferred through the helmet and padding. Prior to plastic helmets, batters used fielders caps. Also, Little League use face masks. Part of the MLB as well as any sport, pee wee or pro, is injuries. That's part of the reason garunteed money in a contract is a thing. Otherwise, if they do get injured and get cut from a team, there's no financial security if such event occurs.
@immockingu35103 жыл бұрын
In other words, of said player gets cut without a garunteed amount, that players forfeits his or her contract (doesn't get paid anything).

They could at least make them wear the same kind of helmet that batters do, just with an ear flap on both sides rather than one. That would at least give them some protection from come-backers than nail them in the head, even if it wouldn't be able to protect their face. I know these kind of accidents are very rare, but I would rather try to mitigate potential harm now and have it not be necessary, than to not do it and have a player eventually end up either hospitalized or deceased. To me, I care more about the safety and well-being of the players (and fans) than any kind of minor hindrance they might cause as a "price". Human lives are far more important to me than game stats. I'd also argue for some manner of chest protection to prevent something like what happened to Damar Hamlin in the NFL (there was an incident as a Little League game where a 9 year old boy got hit in the chest by a baseball and collapsed just like Damar did, and the only thing that saved the boy was the fact that his mother was there and happened to be a nurse, so she was able to keep her boy alive until paramedics arrived and took over).

Ahhh, my first ever concussion came from taking a baseball to the head. 90mph missed the helmet, caught me right next to the temple. Was in the batting cages prior to my game, and the pitching machine has two spinning wheels, they had one wheel spinning faster so the ball cut right into me. Knocked out cold, ended up playing 7 innings, took myself out of the game, went to the bench and put my head back, then all I remember is waking up the next day.

1) Regarding serious injuries: The worst one I know of was in 1967. An extremely talented young player named Tony Conigliaro was hit in the head while batting. He suffered a fractured cheekbone, a dislocated jaw, and damage to an eye. He returned to play after missing one-and-a-half seasons, but was never as good of a player. His injury was partially responsible for adding earflaps to batting helmets. 2) Regarding deaths: There has been one death resulting from an on-the-field injury in major league baseball (I don't know about minor leagues). In 1920 a player named Ray Chapman was hit in the head while batting and died 12 hours later. At that time it was common for pitchers to make the ball dirty, so that it was more difficult to be seen. After Chapman's death the umpires were told to remove from play a ball that got dirty. It took another 30 years or so for batting helmets to appear, probably because athletes can be macho idiots. 3) The catcher is the only defensive player to wear a helmet. I don't know whether there is a rule prohibiting the rest from wearing them. The only one I know to have worn a helmet in the field was a player named John Olerud, because when he was in college he had a brain aneurysm! He recovered and had an excellent professional career.

In 1920, Indians shortstop Ray Chapman took a fastball from NY Yankee Carl Mays off his temple.. He got up.. staggered a few steps towards first and collapsed. "Blood pouring from his ears". He died the next morning. He's the only person to die from getting hit in a major league game. In the early 2000's, a minor league first base coach took a batted ball off his head and died.. I think his name was Mike Coolbaugh. There was at least one other in the minor leagues in the early 1900's.. but I think that guy dove for a ball and landed wrong and broke his neck.

The average pitcher throws about 95 mph (153 kph) but a few pitchers can hit 100-105 mph (161-168 kph). The speed of the ball off the bat can be much faster though. A really well struck ball can be anywhere from 110-120 mph (177-193 kph). No one has died recently from being hit, but a player in 1920 (before batting helmets) named Ray Chapman died after being hit in the head with a pitch. All of these instances are on accident, especially in Jose Fernandez’s case. He was one of the nicest people in the world, and tragically passed away in a boating accident back in 2016. He was one of the best pitchers in the game, and it was a very terrible day in baseball.
@MGower44652 жыл бұрын
When a player is hurt, the play does not really continue. The ball is live, but the umpires will end the play in a few seconds once it is obvious there is injury. In the case of a comebacker that hits the pitcher, the hitter is usually allowed to advance to second, but not further. But the defense does need to recover the ball and be in a position to challenge further advancements. The trainers are usually already on the way by then, but the umpires choose to not notice the "extra" people on the field while the play is live...but pretty everyone is focused on the downed man, even the hitter-runner.

The Jennings one (5:14) is the worst, just because the dude is standing there on sheer instinct and reflex for a good 10-15 seconds before his body actually starts to shut down. He suffered no permanent ill effects from the hit, but man that was scary. (BTW, believe it or not, the ball caromed off Jennings' head and was caught by a fielder...meaning the batter was out. The ball never hit the ground.)

In highschool a younger brother of my teammate on the varsity team , got hit in the face with a pitch in the mouth , broke and shattered like 8 front teeth and broke his jaw partially , he had to get reconstructive dental surgery just to not have a mouth full of only gums at 16 years old . Many players can play for 10-20 years of ball and never get hit in the face , just a simple head turn can take it in the helmet and if your lucky that’s all you will get , a small few won’t be that lucky to move in time , very very small % though .

There actually has been a death in baseball all the way back in 1920. Ray Chapman was hit in the head with a ball and died 12 hours later. Keep in mind this was before helmets were required. This death led to the rule that umpires must replace the ball whenever it becomes dirty since pitchers at the time soiled up the ball all the time making it hard to see.

There was one case of someone dying after being hit by a pitch in the head in the 50s (I think), he wasn't wearing a helmet (cause it wasn't mandatory then), it was a night game and the pitcher was throwing spitballs (which are now illegal) and discolored the ball making it tougher to see (from his tobacco spit). New rules have since come in to prevent that. They did test a helmet for pitchers, but pitchers found it uncomfortable. Never been hit in the head, I took a line drive in the hand once, and took a pitch in the "pills" twice in little league by the same pitcher, we almost got into a fight cause he admitted to doing it on purpose. He got expelled from the league for that.

Played ball at a variety of levels, a typical college pitcher is 85 mph+. At the MLB level it’s rare to see any pitcher under 90+ for a fastball. In terms of a ball coming back and hitting the pitcher it is incredibly rare to happen and not considered worth it to wear the helmet because the rarity. I pitched for close to 20 years and have had maybe a handful of balls hit back at me. Of those none were really close to head shots for a reference of how often. There have been a few deaths in baseball though I do not believe any were from on field injuries.

First off Fernandez has passed away so show some respect. Second he was an amazing man and player who would never hit someone on purpose. This man escaped to America on a rickety boat that was over capacity when he was a teenager with his mom. When they hit bad weather and high waves he heard a splash and screams. Without thinking or hesitation he jumped in and didn’t realize until he got to the person that he was trying to save was his mom. He got them both back to the boat, then became one of the most loved and missed player and person in modern mlb history. I highly suggest you learn more about baseball, especially pitching, and watch one of the many documentaries about Jose Fernandez.

The pitchers can throw the ball between 70 mph to 110 mph, when u get hit with a fast ball in the head. Ur basically asleep or has something broken OR u got a concussion :L

No one throws it 110 mph. The record is about 105-106.
