One other thing you should also be aware of Adam is the pucks themselves are frozen prior to the games so there is less friction between the rubber and the ice. So the players are just getting hit by a puck, they're getting hit by a frozen puck which is a lot harder

Some players wear deflectors on their skates to help take some of the sting out of shots to the ankle. It's a piece of clear plastic attached to the skate. The most dangerous spots to get hit with a slapshot are the head, neck, or chest. The neck is dangerous since it can collapse and you suffocate, and in the chest, your lung might collapse or heart fail.

How was the Matt Calvert incident versus Vancouver not on here? It used to be that they wouldn’t stop play until a member of the injured players team touched the puck. That incident was so brutal It’s what caused them to change that. He laid on the ice bleeding from the head for over a minute until play finally stopped. Attempted to get up a few times only to fall down, even opposing players were checking in on him while the play was continuing.

Look up an older player named "Ken Danyko" pronounced Dan-a-ko. He was a "Stay at Home" defensemen who never hesitated to lay down and body stop slap shots. He literally used to block shots with his head and face, any part of his body he could put in front of the puck to save the goalie the trouble was used to help the team. The Hockey News did an off season poll asking the players to list who they think are the toughest guys to fight during a game. Danyko's team the New Jersey Devils had 5 of the top 10 on their roster with an asterisk after it. The asterisk is the sixth devil the league was afraid of Ken himself. The entire league stated the man they feared fighting the most was Ken and the reason given was nobody thought they could punch him hard enough to hurt him. They had all seen him block 100 MPH slap shots with his head and face and not leave the ice or suffer from it in any noticeable way.
@Robert-pl1gd10 сағат бұрын
Worst players to try and block a shot from was Weber and Chara. Over 100 MPH. I have hit my funny bone (back of the elbow) so hard my body went into shock and took 3 weeks to regain full feeling in my hand. You should see Duncan Keith lose 7 teeth from a slap shot. Came back into the game after removing the broken teeth
@NicholasIstre3 күн бұрын
Worst place is probably the back of the knee. There is usually no to minimal padding there as you need to be able to flex your knee, and taking a hard shot there can mean ruptured ligaments and tendons. Most often hit place that's the worst is either the foot or ankle. Player skates don't have much padding and the padding on the ankle is usually minimal to allow for flexibility. If you're to block a shot, it's best to face head-on to the shot, with your feet facing forward and to not tense up your lower body. This presents the best padding to take the shot, minimizes the area of your foot exposed to the shot, and allows your lower body that's hit to be carried by the momentum of the puck and minimize the impact. Also, this is less likely to screen your goaltender from the shot. And only do this for shots from the point. Otherwise, keep your body in passing lanes and allow your goaltender to handle the shot. Passes hurt much less than shots... :) That said, the dynamic and fast-paced nature of hockey can make this difficult... Hardest shot I've ever taken was probably from an ECHL player during a pickup game who did a full windup slap shot that I blocked with my left shin. The shot sent my left leg back, broke my shin guard, and likely gave me a hair-line fracture on my tibia. Honestly didn't realize this until after pickup though, as I only felt it stinging for a bit until I took my gear off after pickup to a bloody lump on my shin. The puck bounced almost halfway to the other goaltender off that shot. That shin pad was pretty old at the time and what I used for inline hockey (which uses a plastic puck that's about half the weight of the rubber ice hockey puck), so I got some new and better shin pads before I played again about a month later.
@l2mloyalty92911 сағат бұрын
6:47 probably lower back, there's no padding there and even a cross check can immobilize you
@cmac35303 күн бұрын
There isn't much padding in the stomach area, if any at all. The jerseys over the shoulder pads make hockey players look a lot more padded up then they really are. It's mostly just shoulder pads, elbow pads and gloves on the upper body. The torso, and back are barely padded or not at all. Some guys will choose to wear rib padding but, it's not a standard piece of equipment. On the lower body the pants cover the thighs and pelvis and the top flares up to protect the kidney/spleen area. The knee pads run from the knee, all the way down the shin to the skate. Those are heavily padded on the front but, very lightly padded on the top and sides to allow movement. (They're basically a tall, beefed up soccer/football shinguard that go up to your knee) The skates are basically leather or carbon weave and don't offer much protection. Some guys will choose to wear plastic skate guards if they block a lot of shots but, even then it's basically just a thin layer of plastic.

For context, yes the legs are padded but only on the direct front, they're a lot less protected on the sides and rear so that there's still some flexibility. Also despite hockey skates feeling pretty hard, they are functionally nothing when taking a puck to the foot/ankle. I only played in like rec league but even taking a 60-70 MPH shot to the foot fucking HURTS.

He got a fractured skull, a brain bleed, and had to go to speech therapy to learn how to talk again. Then just about a month ago while playing for the Wild he was again it front of the net, a teammate shot the puck and it hit him in the groin, rupturing his testicle. Played defense for 18 years in hockey, there are three places tied for worst place to take a shot other than the face. Side of the knee (there's no padding here), ankle (very little padding), or the top of your foot where your skate laces are. If you take a shot to the side of the knee your lose complete feeling in that leg for at least a minute or so, ankle just hurts to move your foot for a while, and top of your foot stings for the rest of the day

Worst place to get hit with the puck is right on the laces. There are a lot of places where you don't have much protection, but they are usually places where you have a little more meat. If you are unlucky enough to get hit in the side of the ribs while your arm is raised the puck can break a rib (only hurts when you breathe). The groin hurts at the time and then calms down until after the game. The last time I was hit in the crotch one of my balls swelled to almost double normal size and I had trouble standing in one place during post game beers. It took a little over a week to recover.
