The best tradition hands down was not in the video. It is called the Hawkeye wave. At the University of Iowa the football stadium sit right across the street from the hospital. On the 13th floor of the Stead Children’s Hospital, pediatric patients are given the opportunity to watch the game as the hospital is tall enough to look into the stadium. At the end of the first quarter all players,staff, fans, announcers and so many more turn around and wave to the children that are hospitalized watching the game from the 13th floor. It is a tradition that brings people to tears to see the children get the encouragement and support from everyone.

The thing to undestand about college football is thtat it PRE DATES the NFL. And these teams are all over the country (often in rather small towns) rather than in the largest cities. PLus tickets are cheaper and students usually get in free. People with no pro team close by follow their local college team and the athletes are at a pro level. They just don't get paid a salary. College football is like the minor leagues of American Football. But some programs have such storied histories that people genuinely prefer following their college teams to pro teams. I grew up in Tennessee and before the Tennessee Titans NFL team moved there from Houston, we had no professional team in Tennessee so I followed the University of Tennessee. The nearset pro teams were in Atlanta, Cincinnati, St. Louis, and New Orleans. Today there are closer teams like the Titans and the Carolina Panthers in the NFL. But all around the country in small college towns in the autumn on Saturday afternoons the towns swell to two or three times their size and the people flood in to tailgate and then attend the games. Restaurants and hotels make a lot of money. You should check out college football tailgate parties.
@Tijuanabill6 ай бұрын
What planet are YOU on, that you think students get free tickets? What are you on about? No, not at all. Student tickets are often an option tossed in with tuition payment, but they are most certainly not free, to any school with a real fanbase. Maybe that is true at Tulane or something, but not P4 universities.

Many of these are also the 'big game' where teams have long standing rivalries with specific other schools/teams. So while if you go to any game it will very much be like this the biggest of the year is the rivalry game. Its often the 'homecoming' game where alumni are especially welcome back and they put on the biggest show possible. Most divisions have about 10 teams but there is one that is always seen as the long standing riverlie. Another thing to consider is that professional teams can move around and are only in a few big cities really. So college teams early on filled that gap of providing a local team to follow. Even if people didn't go to the local school they might follow the team. Now they have moved into essentially the development teams for the professional leagues, the only sport that still has a rich development system out of college is baseball, again for historic reasons.

The biggest College Football stadiums are also bigger than the biggest NFL stadiums. The first one you see, Michigan, is the largest football stadium in the USA. That goal post weighs around 500 pounds. College Football is much older than the NFL, so it has rivalries and traditions that are older than the NFL. Our military academies also have College Football teams. Army, Navy, and Air Force. The Army Navy game is a very big deal. Air Force vs Army, or Air Force vs Navy, don't get as much hype, but are still important. College Football season starts in September, and runs though the end of November. December and January have bowl games. During football season, you have high school games on Friday night, College games mostly on Saturday, and NFL on Sunday, Monday Night, and Thursday Night.
