Lso dont forget that Sonny was extremely old. He only started training boxing at around 19 years old, and by the time he fought ali he was 44. He even had to lie about his date of birth to get into the championship fight. He said he was 37 but his sister later revealed he was born sometime in 1920's making him one of the oldest champs of the sport. Great champion Sonny Liston ❤️

Liston was syndicate controlled and known to take dives he had some of the biggest hands of all heavyweights and also the best left jab of them all Jez he was knocking guys out with it like other heavyweights overhand rights all his opponents feared him including MO whose heart was beating so fast they had to postpone the fight for 2 hours plus Dundee had to push him off his stool to get him to go fight in round 1 if sonny's fights were all on the up and up nobody in his time would have beat him. Awesome.

@@franksantucci3038 The Clay fights were not rigged(at least the rematch wasn't).The phantom punch was legit; it was a power counterpunch and a power counterpunch is the most devastating type of punch in history if it lands right*: Marciano was put down by a light heavyweight and said it was the hardest hit he ever received. Walcott put him down with another PCP! These were the only times Rocky ever went down in his undefeated career. Foreman was down twice in the same fight versus Lyle with 2 PCP bumbs! He'd only went down twice to tiredness other than with those PCPs. Look at the Sugar Ray Robinson punch where he counters Fulmer! Graziano also caught Ray with one than floored him! Or where Bonavena counters Frazier twice(and other than Foreman and Bonavena--no one put Smokin Joe down). Or Sonny twice and going down at no other time in his career! All going down to the same type of punch(some out cold) and all very tough guys! But, yeah, his head snaps and his foot lifts off the canvas at the timed of the punch! And, if anyone learned how to do it right, it would be AIi, as he learned from Archie Moore(who was the light heavyweight that had dropped Rocky)! *You either have to sucker your opponent into it with feints or your opponent has be a bull to a matador(when you have a gnn hidden). A "bull" will make tactical errors or create openings for that power counterpunch to land(PCP). Sometimes, they bide their time waiting for the opening and then they pounce.

Whats even worse about the public when it came to Sonny Liston is that they totally overlook the orphanages that he started in order to give back to the local community in his hometown of St. Louis and other parts of the US which ended up giving 5,000 orphans and troubled children homes. He actually donated his over 10 million dollars of his money to charity, became a reformed catholic pastor and often spent his time mentoring troubled children in his home in Las Vegas across the Western part of the United States and was getting re-education to be a guidance counselor.

I didn't think Sonny made $10mill in total earnings his entire career, but if he did I have a more fond respect for Sonny, I had heard him and wife spunky little hottie Geraldine adopted a son named Daniel. I knew he made some TV and movie appearances, I heard he wouldn't throw a fight and made a side bet and it backfired, so is said he started dealing in drugs and it all backfired. Either way I'm glad to hear of his work with charities RIP SONNY...

Sonny Liston what a legend, an all time great Boxer and man. A very misunderstood soul. Sonny never did much talking the look on his face and his hands spoke volumes. Sonny Listons toughness is no front he is one of the toughest men to ever walk this earth. Sonny was very respectful in interviews and showed much kindness and generosity. Joe Louis was Sonny's friend all Sonny ever wanted was to be loved and respected by his people as Joe was. Tragic life, tragic death. Anyone who gave Sonny respect received it those who didn't God help them.

Sonny Liston as a child grew up in immense poverty in the South. His actual birthdate was recorded by his sister, which would be as early as November 2nd, 1919. His father, Tobe Liston was a slave to white landowners in the south, in which after the civil war, and then the emancipation proclamation, Tobe Liston was poor, but he made a contract with his previous slave masters to rent land in which in exchange he was used as a breeding male to procreate 25 children to run an illegal slave farm, only 7 children survived in his family past the age of 30 including Sonny. Fun Fact: Charles "Sonny" Liston isn't even the first Charles out of his siblings, he had two older brothers named Charles which died as mules on the farm in unmarked graves as children. Sonny Liston ran away from the slave farm as a child in order to meet up with his mother who abandoned him to die at the age of 8. He ran away from home at the age of 13 in a 100-mile trek to find his mother in early 30's in Saint Louis, Missouri. When Sonny was a kid he begged white store owners to give him a jobs but they ended up calling the police on him so he became a begger on the streets, and when that didn't work he became a pickpocketer which got him arrested numerous times as a youth, he often slept in ditches and forests . Sonny Liston clarified the reasons why he got himself arrested by saying "prison fed me three squares a day" in which by serving prison time he eventually learned how to box and spent the majority of his childhood in local juvenile detention centers across Missouri. When he was between his late 20's and early 30's he got a shot to box by sparring over 1,500 men, beating over 300 men in organized prison matches in which he was then hired as a mafia leg breaker from that point forward, the rest is history.

He once hurt George Foreman so bad in a sparring match that George had to request backup in two other heavyweight title contenders in #5 ranked heavyweight challenger in Leotis Martin and #16 ranked heavyweight challenger in Amos Lincoln in which two of them ended up in the infirmary. He later fought Leotis Martin in a retirement match which ended up in Liston punching Martin so hard he detached his retenia, forcing him to retire in which Martin later died of his injuries.

I don't know if Foreman "called for back up". What Foreman said was he used to spar with Sonny, and that he was the only boxer that ever made him back up. Leotis Martin knocked Sonny out, but he did get a detached retina and had to retire-- but he didn't die until 1995, so I wouldn't say he died from his injuries.

This heavily muscled Bruiser would have destroyed Marciano in a similar fashion to George Foreman vs Joe Frazier. But Marciano was smarter than Frasier and he exercised better judgment of picking and choosing who and who not to fight. Frazier had to learn the hard way by fighting big George Foreman. Frazier learned the hard way to stay away from guys like Ron Lyle and Ernie shavers who could out gun him.

Sonny Listen was born into a brutal life. but make no mistake, he grew up to be a brutal man. He maimed and crippled other men for pay - and I am not talking about other boxers in the ring, but as often as not, other poor uneducated men, like himself. Boxers feared him because they knew that he might kill them in the ring, and that he would do so without hesitation or qualm. Does this make him an "intense competitor"... or something more sinister? Do I believe that he was evil, or that he was a victim of his circumstances? I believe that it is more complicated than that. but remember, they are not being euphemistic, saying that he was a "skull cracker" and a "leg breaker". Do his childhood scars justify that? I'm in no position to judge - but it certainly seems, even in this sympathetic telling, that he was not exceedingly popular, even among his social peers.

Seems to me that you're totally judging Sonny Liston and you don't know anything about how he had to live his life from a very young child. You get beat on and told you're stupid and you'll never be anything and then get beat on some more, it makes you do brutal things. Because, why not? It's amazing to me how people that never knew that guy and never lived anything remotely close to the life he led, they judge him like he's a pos. He had a lot of really great admirable qualities why don't you focus on those instead. Because he didn't walk into a school and break the leg of a librarian. He beat the crap out of people that were not very good people. That's just the way life is.

@@lesglover6515 I'm not "judging" the man. I certainly have no such moral authority. He grew up in a brutal setting. Part of that was making a choice (because in the end we all have a to make our own choices) to hurt people for pay. How do you think the poor folks that had the same tough life that he did, felt after he left them crippled or maimed, and then trying to get along? Perhaps his choice was him or them. I don't know, and I can't say. However, while I can't say why he made the choices he did - I am saying this, his choices may have made him feared, but they did not make him loved, respected, or widely admired. I'm not saying he was good or bad, I am saying that he was hard. But the simple truth was, that his path in life made people fear him more than respect him. I'm not saying that was right or wrong, I am just saying that's what the record shows.

@@theblackbear211 a lot of people respected him because they took the time to look into all of his charity work and how he was with the elderly and the little kids. The general population may not have known that but real people did. But I don't want to debate this anymore you're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine. Thank you.

Milo, yes! unfortunately the America public did the same in not accepting our soldiers when they return home from the Vietnam War.Thankfully, America is much, much, much, better than that now.Cassius Clay's PURE ELUSIVENESS,HAND SPEED,FOOT SPEED was just to overwhelming for Sonny in both fights. It seemed to me like he didn't adjust to Clay's boxing style. Sonny never used,or didn't know how to:👉like tie him up on the ropes, cut off the ring, make Cassius get into a brawl at close range were his long reach, and extremely powerful punches could be used to his advantage.Well, the way his life ended, that's usually how it is when the mob is through using a person.🙁

Sonny is one of my all time favorite boxers. He was very good. When he fought Ali, he was a lot older than would tell people. He said that he was younger in order to fit the persona of an up and coming fighter. He learn how to fight in prison. Everyone who knew him has said he was wonderful with kids and older people. I am so glad that you decided to do a feature on Sonny Liston. He was one of the great ones who never was accepted by the masses.

The story of Listons return after winning the championship is one of the few stories that makes me emotional every time I think about it. A man whose been feared or hated his entire life thinking he'd either come home to a crowd of people finally cheering for him or at the very least a crowd booing him like he was used to. But then he gets off the plane and nobody cared enough to even show up, I honestly can't even imagine what that must've felt like.

Milo there are better documentaries on liston and also british encyclopaedia days liston born 1917 of he fought ad a 20 year old he would have butchered joe louis and all others joe louis fought only bums creampuffs tomatoes cans which is slang for boxers with no talent the greatest boxer of all time was harry greb who in 13 years with one eye fought over 500 times 5feet 8 inches 147 pounds only lost 18 times on one year he fought 46 times won all and won over 26 heavyweights he beat up jack dempsey in a sparing sessions s german and Irish fighting machine

Sonny liston truly faught all fighter fairly and he won but the people never gave him his credit..it was so unfair..! I hope today generation knew about him and he should be stated has the greatest fighter of all time.‼️ U see in those era's or in today's era fighters who has " big mouth " those kind of fighters people will support and give overrated status!! But for sonny liston even he beat all the fighters still people doesn't like him..& underrated..why❓ Hey " we should just respect and give credit to his skills and and to his sportsmanship as a great feared fighter ... people should give him his honour...so sad to see he doesn't get any appreciation things that he done in boxing..? I hope people should remember "sonny liston "as a greatest feared fighter of all time" & give him his respect in his accomplishment throughout his career.. For me sonny liston is a step higher then Ali.. U see sonny liston aged is uncertain in those time some say he lowered his aged to compete in the fight..that why some boxing historian or analysis says sonny maybe was in 40"s or even in his 50's when he faught Ali..
