If you were willing to learn and train hard under Sensei Kato's watchful eye, you benefited from far more than ' sport karate '. There was a depth of what karate truly was in essence and that really did mean much more than just technique. It was made obvious when you observed him in the dojo demonstrating basic form -- his whole body obeyed throughout. The nuances of hip, elbow, balance, breathing and correct focus, all made deceptively attainable. His was a genuine vocation in respect of that art. Rather sad that he is no longer with us.

While I personally think that some of Kato Sensei's kata applications are too complex (I subscribe to the KISS principle), there's no doubting his love of karate. He is also dedicated to getting everyone better than their Japanese counterparts by teaching better methods of moving.
