I don't know. JKA kumite (eg. All Japan Championships) is still pretty much the same as it was. Same protection as on this video (none). People are expected to have more control on strikes to the head than on the 1980s, as nobody loves brain damage. But they do lose teeth, broke noses etc. when the control is not 100%, and finalists often have some blood on their gi. JKA has "one and done" ruleset, so there is a lot of cautious mind games going on as one mistake will often end the match. For final match it's different: 3 full points / 6 half points available for each competitor to grab.

I know students who know like 25-30 Kata before they get their first black belt who would get dropped in a fight - other countries didn’t start watering Karate down like we have, and the “Do (Tao, Way)” literally doesn’t exist in most schools in America 👌🏽
@gkauto1959Ай бұрын
It depends who the student and the teacher is once they learn enough Kata to earn that black belt. All the black belt signifies is that thy simply know and can teach the basics. But mastering the basics is getting to know your distance to your opponent, and choosing one counter that will work in that situation, and if you are at areal Karate dojo, by the time you would have those 25 katas down pat YOU WOULD ALSO HAVE DONE SPARRING, LOTS OF IT, AND WOULD MOST LIKELY DROP THE ASSAILANT. Compared to the average street fighter Im taking the black belt, if he or she is a real black belt they will do well in what we call "real time"

I know where you are coming from; I used to box then switched to Karate , but Ive seen what May Thai fighters can do to an opponents leg, and Ive seen their punches and elbows, only the Kyokushin guys are as brutal as you guys are, but lets not forget that to simply win a street fight using Karate is not only possible but if the Karate guy is well trained chances are he's gonna land some real good hits, and drop his opponent. Of course the Thai fighters will do it much faster, but these are trained professionals, not the usual clerk the Karate crowd attracts, all 3 styles can down an opponent, and thats why they are around, but you will have alot less injuries with Karate over either kyokushin or M Thai, and thats why I choose it over the other 2, so I could train in it for years and not need a hospital after practice. Thats not to say any one art is better than the other 2, only that the 2 are much more based on sparring than the Katas we do in Karate. If you train hard at anything, its gonna work when you need it, but you will work your ass right off doing with either MThai or Kyokushin, plus you will gain lots of experience in the ring doing it. But I'll still take Karate, its effective and over time will benefit me, not break me apart.

Cos you will not have a ton of spongy gear when needing to defend yourself. It creates bad habits.
@roymitchell49533 ай бұрын
I started in the Martial Arts in 1975 and was active training & teaching over 20-25 years. Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee had recently invented Safe-T punch, Safe-T chop, & Safe-T kick. This helped reduce accidental heavy contact, and the knots and contusions or concussions that came with contact sparring, especially to the head. Not attacking the head with punches as in some Karate styles and in Olympic style Taekwondo would develop the bad habit of not protecting your own head in a real fight. You are more likely to get punched in the head or face, than kicked in the head or face on the streets unless you are on the ground. Stepping on one foot, all but immobilized that foot and makes the other foot less effective for kicks too. Trading punch for punch to the body is not realistic training either. Using a variety of kicks and punches at different heights levels, like going high, then low or visa-versa, have a better chance of being effective & deceptive in a street fight. What happened to the ridge hand, knife hand, and backfists strikes? Nobody does them anymore, because some tournament rules don't allow them. Most people that I trained with were not trying to become world champions, but wanted to know how to defend themselves against an attacker, most of whom, did not know Karate or some other martial art. I did not like sparring, but I knew it was necessary to develop skill in fighting. It was like going to the lab, where you test out new techniques and changed or dropped the old ones. I forced myself to go to two other Martial Arts clubs to spar more than just the one or two nights a week we sparred at our club. Also, I wanted to spar with different people, other than just the ones in our club. It was like going to a tournament every week, without the need for out-of- town travel and the expense.
