Could a system become more inefficiënt over time because it is unable to adapt efficiently to a changing environment? A symbolic system doesn't necessarily take inputs and transform them into functional outputs. Then since a system doesn't map one to one, it produces a system of byproducts, that deviate or obscure the main functional outputs, such that it destroys the system within. Systems have lifecycles. Talking about a system in a very abstract way obscures many things, but keeps the narrative static. As narratives are a super set of systems themselves.
