I think it's the opposite of counterproductive. There's nothing like going to the stop and having fun looking for music and the amazing feeling of physically having it in your hands, listening to it in your car or at home, and adding it to your collection. I've thousands of DVDs in my collection and I'm not about to stop now just because video stores are no longer because of streaming services, and that there's higher quality like 4K. I feel happy being surrounded by my movies, books and yes - CDs. It's a part of who I am. Whenever I buy something whether it's new or second-hand, I have a boost of dopamine and inspiration. Don't let your spark die. Please.

I think a lot of music producers should speak out on this topic and Bolo is 11/10 right about it. Social media changed the game. It changed so much how people think it's absurd. I would argue that like 70% of people that upload or make music today is out of greed for attention, to be cool, or to copy what their idol is doing etc. There's a majority of people that make music, but aren't even in love with the artform and the quality is the result of that. there's too many factors what makes a hit today and most of them have nothing to do with music at all. Most of this shit we listen to today wouldn't fly 15 years ago for sure. We've gotten so far that some artists publish unfinished or bad tracks and get away with it and it's sad. More people try to cancel artists for what they've said on the internet or over some feud they have no business digging their nose into like street beef or personal matter, but when it comes to music anything flies..
@DADON99 Жыл бұрын
I been saying this for a min. Artists today don’t have love for music…they have love for what they can get out of it and that’s money and fame. It’s crazy how people like Russ and Cordae (people that make great music with substance) can’t get any mainstream attention but Ice Spice everywhere😂. This generation will listen to anything that got a drill beat and extreme sexual lyrics. One person in these comments basically told me that not everyone wants to listen to music with meaning and creativity…sometimes people just wanna vibe…and that’s what’s wrong this generation…no one wants to listen to music anymore…they just wanna “vibe”

I completely agree with everything you said. I would add that we as creators don't choose the time we are born or the time we try to climb in the industry. It isn't really the artist or producers fault, but the whole industry. Music has always been subjective, and thus a difficult thing for labels to evaluate who to invest in. Social media created a situation where instead of using their ears.. which was never perfect.. they use their eyes.. signing what many call "Brand Equity" aka the social media following. I was at a Taxi Road Rally in 2010 when we heard a panel of major label presidents, who all talked of this new practice. I think it is a shame but also think there is no perfect situation. The older days were more expensive to make records, so artists needed label money (in most cases) to make a record. Distributing a record was even more cost prohibited.. needing millions of cds, vinyls, or cassettes in order to sell millions. The days of limited labels were also not perfect... they would do things like collude with other companies, blacklist artists, sign artists they never intended to release.. just to kill competition. The times we are in definitely reward different skill sets. Once upon a time you literally had to have musicians to record new sections. Editing was much more difficult, and impossible the way we now do it. These days a little music ability, technology know how, and some marketing skills beats the virtuoso musician without those other skills. People should remember that Jimi Hendrix wasn't Jimi until his Manager came up with the branding idea.. the modern day Hendrix is probably playing covers at a bar in Austin. Again, we don't choose our time, but we can choose how we navigate the time. I love watching your videos Bolo! I really respect how humble you are despite producing such hits. We appreciate you!

Hip hop has been going in that direction from the beginning it’s all about rejecting conventional ways of thinking and finding new ways to get it done without needing a real band or a real singer or a real studio or a record deal or MTV so now you have people in the booth that don’t sing people making music that don’t play an instrument and a record company that doesn’t have a staff and anybody can upload their music music for a few dollars a year 😢 But the real winners are the streaming platforms because they don’t care if your song is good but keep trying we’ll be here waiting to take your money 😆

There's pluses and minuses. On the downside, success now is way more about social media presence and hustle than talent. It freezes out a lot of very musically talented people who don't have social media grind. On the flip side, though, social media does allow people to bypass crooked ass labels and all the BS that so many artists once had to deal with and blaze their own paths. And, people in regions that never got shine now get a chance to be seen and heard.

I'm total amateur started doing music recently and usually takes me couple hours to make beat sounds good (my previous songs are total garbage lol). I don't use loops, and midi packs, for me that's not even music making if beat makers use them. I think they are pushed to make these beats fast because they are putting out so many beats daily to make living out of it. From what I heard along the past months, most of artist picks more simple beats because they want space or they really can't get into something more complex. Your statement is one of reasons why I gave up on hip hop / rap. Trying to get into RnB, pop.. Learning every day

@@diemcarpemusic Music production and music creation are essentially two separate things, a producer does not have to create anything them selfs. The term producer is gathering and combining of the necessary ingredients into a production, it dont matter if they made the sounds or some one else did. With that said it is quicker and easier for more established producers to just get a loop made by some one else, add that same 808 and drums and that's it done in 10 minuts. Sad truth is Rappers dont want different, it's like right now If I show a Rapper My style of beats they dont want to rap the them, I'll get "Erm Its alright but I want drill". I am now making Drill simply because that's all UK rappers want right now. Ofcourse there is the UK Hiphop rappers but not really much money in that. The only UK Hiphop label with any success right now is High Focus records.

@@diemcarpemusic I play over 20 instruments and I am pitch perfect. So I can play anything by ear. I can start and finish a quality beat in no more than 10 minutes. The maximum amount of time that it takes to start and finish a beat doesnt have anything to do with the quality of the beat. I dont take longer than 15 minutes to make a beat. I will never use any preconceived melodies/chord progressions (loops). But I understand why modern producers use that bs. It's easier for them. Different strokes for different folks

It's a clout-chasing, microwave society, and many (Melinnals & Gen z's+) don't want to go through the process. Their generation has access to more knowledge than we could ever imagine, and while they are more knowledgeable, they lack wisdom, making them prideful. Listen to how they disrespect hip-hop pioneers; DJ Akademik's comments are a microcosm of this generation's way of thinking. The real effort happens when no one is looking. I'm 53 and know what it's like to cut/splice tape on a reel-to-reel and make beats on a TR-505 with 16 sounds. That required creativity, patients, and dedication, and we used what we had. Today we have access to more than 2TB of sounds (and I love it) and can buy a mix template for our favorite DAW, drag over a MIDI pack, and bam, you got a song. As a result, so much of today's music is terrible because it doesn't cost anything to create. However, we can't just criticize them; we must teach them and set an example while learning from each other.

I honestly feel like Hip Hop in particular has been being slowly ruined for years, and it’s more than just social media doing it. It would take a whole other video to talk about. But to me it’s a cumulative effect, like a boxer taking body shot after body shot. Sooner or later once them hands drop that’s when the left hook comes in! BANG! KO!!! I don’t know if social media is or will be that left hook, but Hip Hop is definitely losing this fight and in danger of being KO’ed. At least in the mainstream. There’s plenty of good music underground.

This music today, especially hip hop, doesn't take talent. That's part of the problem. Theres supposed to be levels to this but technology allows anyone to sound decent even if they're sub par. But because they don't actually have skill they're only mimicking the few artists they like and thinking that's all it takes. If your not trying to develop a skill then you won't. Learn the skill of rap before you think your making hip hop. If you do that you can actually develop a sound and not sound like every other rapper the last 15 years.
