Ignore the haters, mate. Last year I was at a low point and I found your channel and I watched your stuff on the small Bounty. And I thought... I used to build model ships. It's been quite a year since then. I've dusted off the workbench and chucked out a lot of junk, reorganised and I'm underway again... Building. So it's all your fault. 😂😂😂

Greetings from Scotland. I started modelling at my late father’s knee back in 1966 with an Airfix 1/76th Tiger. It’s a rewarding hobby which has helped to distract me from a stressful career. You are absolutely spot on about the rivet counters! I was getting all wrapped up about the flaws in my work when your message, ‘build the thing for yourself’ hit me in the face like a slap from a wet fish! Thank you. I’ve graduated to wooden sailing ship kits now and I’m building the bloody thing for myself, now. Don’t let the bastards grind you down.

You are spot on correct!! Its too bad that the chaos of the world has to infiltrate into a hobby, something you do for leisure. I have come across some people like you described. In general I find they are insecure in their own abilities. Some people whine about everything, they piss and moan about the most unimportant stuff. I like your channel, thats why Im subsribed.I enjoy the content, I enjoy seeing what other modelers are up to. Keep up the great work! Thank you.

Well said, Harry. The problem with social media is that there are many people on it who lack social skills. And who have an ego the size of Nebraska, with a yen for bossing everyone else around. Harry I'm in Chateauguay Quebec here just outside of the island of Montreal 🇨🇦! I hear you loud and clear about the hobby and all the "knitpickers" out there ! I actually quit hanging out with a modeller who kept doing this shit about "that's the wrong color, the wrong technique and all kinds of insults about my work that he took the fun out of my hobby. He actually started an argument over it so I split and never went back. Model building is not about stressing over perfection, we all want that but we have to accept that there are some things we just can't do! Just look at a 360° photo shoot of a Spitfire engine for example. You can scratch build a lot in the 32 scale but you're not going to get it all in there! So don't let the haters piss you off but stiff them right back by ignoring their shotgun comments! Build and enjoy!

Brilliant Harry! You tell them. I always enjoy your many and varied builds from Stingray to the Sunderland and the ships. In modelling we all try to put OUR interpretation of the subject onto the supplied kit. Straight out of the box, added aftermarket, conversions the list goes on. Then there are those, like you, who film it all and post videos on KZbin for us, another amazing skill in itself.

I've got more ship kits lined up and next time I know more of what to do. Keep the videos coming Harry, they're a real boost for folk like me . Pay no attention to the rivet counters and drongos. Im 45 years old, so i remember very well the world without internet. I started building models in the summer of 1990. Back then in my country Greece, there were only two scale modeling magazines. The only way to get any insights on techniques and modelling news it was for somebody to write an article. The only way to interact with fellow modellers was to attend or participate in the local annual IPMS exhibition or hang out in hobby stores. Taking part in the local IPMS meant that you had to pay a participation fee, then pack your model carefully and if it survived the transportation then pray that it will continue surviving through the exhibition, where it was not at all impossible for some careless idiot to smack it passing through, or some kid to try to grab it. If you were at a really good level aspiring to win an award, then you would have to accept that if you did not belong in the inner circle of locally renown modellers who actually run the show, unless you were absolutely amazing to the point that it would be scandalous to be passed over, then most probably you would fall victim of favoritism and for some people that was really disappointing to the point of not participating again. When internet became available, the first scale modelling pages made by hobbyists certainly had a ''one of us'' feeling compared to the magazines, but still there was no real interaction. That changed with the scale modelling forums. There was the first chance for real interaction and discussion. The advent of social media, made that interaction even easier and direct. You can interact with people all over the world, show your work, look at theirs. Are there crazy people out there? Hell yes! Social media gave a megaphone to all of us, people who 30 years ago would be making speeches in the local park while people passing by would stand for a moment to laugh at them and go on, got the means to ''preach to the world''. I think that the best we can do is to stand for abit, laugh at them and continue our day. Overall the usefulness of social media outweigh any problematic aspects.

You sometimes have to remind yourself who you're doing it all for. If you're doing it just to seek approval from others, sure, you might get some, but, are they just blowing smoke because the rules of the group you're on are to 'be kind'!? I praise anything I think is good, if I don't think it is then I leave it alone. I do my stuff to please me, if it pleases others all well and good. I'm all for a bit of encouragement. If you get praise from people whose work you like then that spurs you on. Take heart from them and just ignore the others, you're not doing it for them! Keep on keeping on Harry and don't let them grind you down!

I’m 53 years old. I’ve been doing hobby stuff for over 40 years. For me the thing I think sucks the most is that social media created HUGE “communities “ around all the hobbies, which has now usurped the CULTURES of the hobbies, which have become unbearably toxic. Instead of meeting a bunch of people who like your hobby face to face at a VFW hall or public library once in a while to share hobbies for fun, it’s now millions of people in huge absurd pissing contests about who’s “right” .

Greetings Harry from a frozen and sub-zero Chicagoland area, USA. The internet for me has increased my interest and enthusiasm in the hobby. Being in touch regularly with people all around the world to share and discuss the hobby I love is a great thing! Sadly, the dregs of society and the world exist everywhere! No matter what we post, what we share there are those that take a morbid- and perhaps mentally disturbed- pleasure in trolling people. Best thing to do is ignore the bastards! Don't give them any time or recognition at all! Fokker the trolls!!!

I enjoy variouse modeling channels. To learn about products, technigue, and to appreciate other's finished models. While i might make a comment (rarely), my comments are positive, appreciation of others efforts or i'm commenting to ask a question, trying to improve my own knowledge. I do not go through life bashing down others, not my thing. I'd rather offer a hand to help somone. I'm sorry youre experiencing negative comments from others. Hey Mate, I have gone down the path of super accuracy, photo etch Blah Blah Blah. In the end my models are in my hobby room and so few people actually see them, and then none of them could actually criticise the end product, because they are not subject matter experts or modelers them selves. As I have got older, and to be fair the complexity of kits have increased, I find that sometimes I cannot be bothered with tiny parts and tiny decals that you cant see without a X-Ray Vision. At the end of the day I have learn to just enjoy my model making. E.G. I just completed a ME262 jet with the interior colour being chromate green instead of a dark grey. My mates will rave about how cool it is, and they wont know that the colour is incorrect. So what I have learnt is just to enjoy what I do, I don't enter competitions etc. I just model for my own enjoyment and that is the key. If it is not 100% accurate who cares. do what makes you happy!!!. Don't let these arsoles get you down!!!!

The beauty of this hobby was supposed to be there was no right or wrong way to do things; if doing what you want gives you the results you are happy with, so be it. The social media "experts" are the same ones that drove me away from model clubs/shows-- everyone a damn critic. When I saw contest judges getting out little flashlights and magnifying glasses to look into a 1/72 aircraft cockpit... no, that's not why I build models.

Well, I'm glad it's not just me! I've only recently started a KZbin scale modelling channel and for the most part, the comments I've had have been really positive and encouraging. Inevitably of course, there were a few individuals who seemed to take extreme personal offense, especially to my first video, and left some very angry, spiteful and personally insulting comments. It boggles my mind that such people actually exist and I have to wonder if they really take the hobby (and themselves) so seriously, or do they just enjoy stirring the shit whilst enjoying the safety and anonymity of a computer in their mom's basement? Do they even build models...?! Keep the up the good work Harry and don't let the bastards grind you down!

I'm 50 next week and reflecting back on the kits I have made in my life. Old Matchbox and Revell kits that aren't seen as up to today's standards. But then, as now, make me happy. But Social Media can't accept this. When the Internet started I'd get depressed and discouraged by the standard of what I was seeing online but would keep going. But a little of Social Media is much more toxic and corrosive to the modelling spirit. So I try and avoid it and grateful for encouraging SM posters like you, Plasmo, Night Shit et al. Please keep posting, please play the banjo and look forward to a nice Drop Bear kit I hope you can make one day 🙂

If Harry identifies as an airfix kit I hope he remembers the golden rule: too much glue can be bad for you 😅 Model makers should always stick together 😅 Somewhere out there on social media is always somebody with a good technique you've never tried or a talent for doing things you can't. @@HarryHoudiniModels I look at the kits and especially the ships you make and am utterly jealous. Some of the kits you show were on their first product runs when I made them, having been introduced to the hobby by my dad, who not only worked at a plastics factory, but had a weekend job in a model shop, so discounts were a big thing for us until the oil crisis shot all the prices up. What my kids spend on a model today (yes I got them into it too), would have kept me in kits for a couple of years. 😆

Great video! Regarding the Arizona... it was more like 80 years, but at that point, who's counting? Regarding the rest of the video, in my humble opinion, and somewhat experience.... yeah, social media is a double edged sword. Moderated pages or channels tend to be better than unmoderated places. As such, someone gives you lip or harrasses you about how you enjoy your build, moderation can get rid of the comment. As such, things tend to stay more civil. Places like, well... here on youtube, there is no such moderation. Its up to you as a channel owner to muck your own stall (outside of a few youtube based standards, like threats of physical harm). From the gents in my local club, it seems that a lot of the negative nancies on social media end up as IPMS judges at the shows 😂

Build your models how you want. After all, the models are your medium and You are the artist. I agree to models being a therapy to many people (I'm one of them). I drive a truck here in the U.S. and I enjoy my downtime. My advice for the haters is to let them hate. They usually are unhappy with their own lives and try to make everyone else unhappy like them. You worry about your happiness and don't let them bother you. If modeling makes you happy, then MODEL ON BROTHER! It's time for these haters to hit the road. I do enjoy watching your videos. The comedian Dennis Miller wisely said that two-thirds of people are decent and one-third are assholes. The proportion is constant among sexes, races, countries, etc. It's inevitable that our hobby has its share of assholes (and I've met a few) and I just try to ignore them so they don't get the satisfaction of thinking I give a shit about the crap they're spewing. Our IPMS club has one rule, and that is you never criticize another's model. If they ask how something might have been done a little better, you're free to make constructive comments. Otherwise, keep it to yourself. Build what you want, and build it to satisfy you.

Scale modeling was dying, but all these social media posters have brought life back to it. With the price of kits, it is nice to have people out there from across the globe to learn new tricks vs trial and error on a $100 US kit, or to find out that the $100 US kit you were looking at buying is really difficult, and should be avoided until your skills (learned here) have improved. There is only a plus side to these videos.

The sad thing is some people don't realise how nasty their comments can be and fail to think about how they would react if they recieved the same comment back to them. I'm a great believer of, "if you can't say nothing nice, don't say anything at all", after all on social media we still have the choice of scrolling past or if something is not to your taste, just stop watching and move on. With the option of leaving a comment, constructive criticism or advice is expected but can still be phrased politely enough to not be offensive and could even be seen as a genuine attempt to help. While I do post my builds on social media, I've luckily not received any rude or hateful comments, even though I admit my builds are average at best and I continually strive to improve. In the end whatever the outcome, I enjoy the hobby for myself, not for others approval. As for yourself, you build wonderful models and if nothing else I get a bloody good laugh at your comments. In other words....keep doing what you're doing! Ps I expect an epic rendition of Foggy Mountain Breakdown later on in the year! Lol

Rivet counters are the bane of our existence. They seem to think our models are theirs. I found myself getting into 1:700 ships, RC, 1;50 scale construction, 1:64 semi trucks/lorrys, and the once-in-a-blue-moon train, and mainly due to folks who collect for the sake of having a grand ol' time, not these folks who spend to much time counting rivets, and seem lines. Those folks have an unhealthy addiction to detail, and an attitude (usually accusatory) problem. Shoot, I have Tamiya's Prinz Eugen kit, and I did her (not her plane which still needs painted) in her 1941 Baltic camo, with her 1942 channel-dash anti-aircraft gun additions. 'Cuz I like my Prinz Eugen that way. Loved the gender joke...if I had to, I'd be an Admiral Hipper class heavy cruiser...but nope, pretty sure I'm one of the "problematic" types... And on the Arizona bit, I don't care how you do your Arizona. Having lived in the state she is named for, she may be filled with value to our country like the ore fields of the state, but you can do her as different as you want, like the different rock types that make up the landscape of Arizona. If you do her in the future, I fully stand by you doing so. Nobody talks about West Virginia, Cassin, Downs, Helana, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and the other ships damaged/lost as a direct result of the attack. Nah, it's all Arizona, despite that we spit in the Jap's faces when we built new hulls for destroyers who were practically scrap in all but almost brand-new machinery, and re-floated NOT one, NOT two, but nearly ALL of the battleships that could be recovered. Oh, and ANY patriot that so much as say that we had no aircraft in the air needs a history lesson. Two planes from CV-6 (Enterprise) were shot down by the Japanese, and two other planes got airborne to fight (From the airfield, not Enty). Enterprise would also get to sink the first ship after declaration of war. The attack on Pearl was to disable/sink the Lexington/Yorktown class carriers, and even then, the attack failed due to poor target prioritization, destruction of the tank farms could have crippled the Pacific fleet without sinking or damaging one ship. Now that I think of it...Iowa in Tirpitz camo circa 1945 anyone? Sounds like fun. (I might actually do that now)
