Social Media Sewing Trends I want TO SEE MORE of in 2023!

As a follow up to my previous video I want to share some social media sewing trends that I love seeing on my feed and that I would so love to see more of in 2023!
At the heart of them, these trends are about intentionality, education and celebration of our garments.
This sewing chat is pretty much me dreaming about content I would love to see on social media when it comes to sewing and making garments and so do let me know which ones are your favourites.

Who else has a pinterest board of all the clothes you want to make, drowned, created a 2022 board of just the things you REALLY want to make, then slowly removing pins from that board because you still got overwhelmed? Just me?

Definitely a thing for me! 😅I've started sorting my sewing inspo pins into subcategories by season: so stuff I might want to make in spring, or winter projects etc. Maybe even decor or accessories. And then everytime I go fabric shopping I go through the subfolders and pick some options of what I might be looking for/might be available. Then I save screenshots of those to my phone gallery under 'spring sewing' (or whatever the topic lol) so I futher reduce the list. I also look at it quite a lot haha so if I spot a fabric that isn't on the shopping list, I know what I'd like to do with it if I really love it. And then after a while the folder gets filtered out by either making projects, or not finding fabrics or deciding after a while that I'm actually not loving it too much anymore. This process helps me feel less overwhelmed with all my inspo and when I'm looking for supplies. Plus the whole process is more mindful and intentional! Hope this whole NOVEL of tips helped a bit😂💖

I have one, it's the Noah shirt pattern. it's sooo good, I made shirts for almost everyone in my family using that. Male or Female, all looks great, a few tweaks on the side seam for larger bodies and it's stellar.

Love these conversations you’re starting! There are certainly ways to produce regular social media content without having to make a new item for each post. Quick tutorials, techniques, various steps of a project, reviews of products we use all the time, etc. I'd like to see more substance over style, content that helps us improve our sewing and learn. We also don't have to always showcase the newest patterns, fabrics, notions, etc. EDIT: One more thing, I'd appreciate sewing content creators share how much time they spent on their project and set more realistic timelines for blog and video titles. I'm a very slow sewist and it annoys me when a tutorial is touted something like "1 Hour Skirt!" when I damn well know it's gonna take me 2 days.

I first discovered your channel and followed your right after last weeks video. I'm totally with you! I feel so overwhelmed with all that fast fashion like sewing content. I don't want to sew trends, I want timeless clothes that fit and last. I would add to the list of things I would like to see more: - zero waist fashion, that's not just bulky kimono style clothes - sew your stash videos -thrift flips that are actually easy, even for beginners (I think that all falls into sustainable sewing content)

Hello. ^^ For all those reasons you mention now and in the video from last week, I´m totally happy consuming videos of beautiful people like Bernadette Banner, Abby Cox, The Closet Historian, Nicole Rudolph, Mariah Pattie, Morgan Donner, Cat´s Costumery, Sewstine and probably many more I forgot to mention. Sure they all are headed towards a different direction than sewing jeans and T-shirt (aka modern apparel) but what I like and love about their content is I get to learn about fabrics, construction of garments/gowns, I get to learn about modern and historical ways to sew, I get to hear about their mistakes and what they want to do better in the future, longevity of certain garments how to care for them. And the most fun part for me is to see them actually wear what they made and how they would style it. ^^ I have a lot of respect for all of them.

I love the idea of sharing more about money and especially labor! My time is limited and that's why I prefer to make simpler patterns and if I know how long a pattern will take to make, that could be a deciding factor for me. I would also love to see more people shop their fabric and pattern stash instead of buying more (I'm calling myself out with this one)!

something I would love to see in regards to patterns, that as well as being timeless, they are also more size inclusive! I come across so many patterns that are incredibly popular & timeless, but that have a very straight sizing range. Because I’m so new to sewing, I don’t have the confidence to try and grade up sewing patterns myself. I would love to see more people & companies producing patterns really putting in the time & thought to produce patterns that have a wide range of sizes.

Cashmerette patterns makes fitted garment patterns specifically for bigger busted women. Their Lenox shirt dress is beautiful! And the Roseclair wrap dress. Their patterns are excellent. I don’t know of another pattern company that focuses on the big girls.

I like seeing MASSIVE sewing/cutting errors that are rescued by a creative leap of some kind. My best-looking results have come from embarrassing cock-ups (like cutting two sleeves the same instead of a pair, - doh - and having only fabric scraps left).

I like the time and money idea. I think it really helps you appreciate what kind of work goes into a garment and it makes you realize that more than likely the person who made a store bought garment was probably not fairly compensated for their effort.

Sharing a work in progress is very common in the knitting community! Probably because it's a much slower craft than sewing, as we are literally creating the fabric. I love seeing sewists' works-in-progress.

I loved this content! People speeding around and showing their hauls and all the jump cut editing, just overwhelms my senses. The entire point, to me, of sewing is to take time. Lots of time. My sewer buddies brag about how much time they spent on a garment, not how little. I drool over the inside of a garment beautifully finished.

For us "oldies" it would be great to learn how to make more dynamic content such as videos. Sounds basic to your generation but I've stopped posting because I can't be bothered to take unflattering photos any more. There's a gap in the market for you! One tip I can give you is to always photograph your makes in natural light - so not in the evenings etc. Take them near a window and it will look 100% better. or go outside and again boom so much nicer! Lol, time and money! I was feeling so proud of my dress that cost NZ$4 in second-hand fabric and buttons, until my husband teasingly asked me what my time was worth. Probably cost $800 of my time. Still proud though.

I think that the best balance to try and strike is to be entertaining whilst sharing knowledge. I think of my favourite teachers - they were the ones who were passing down information in a way that captured my mind. A lot of it is down to personality, great communication skills and good visuals! I think so many people would be interested in sewing on a budget and would benefit from your experience, as I remember when I first started sewing I found it all to be so expensive. Like yourself I've only been sewing for a few years but I've found the Sew over it, sew essential, Evelyn wood, to be very helpful on my sewing journey. I watch many home sewers too, but everyone is different so you'll better searching yourself and finding your own favourites. Best ones are those that have much more experience than us 😀
