Our Zoo and roller skating rink actually have homeschool days where we meet so many other homeschoolers. It is a great way for the kids to socialize, but also it is great for the parents too.

May I add? For teenagers, volunteer work and youth group! For younger ones I’d like to add nature school. This is a great way to meet other homeschoolers. My son attends one 2x per week. Other ideas my kids have enjoyed: homeschool art classes, homeschool sewing lessons and homeschool musical theatre 😊

I’m so glad you mentioned that we need to rethink our ideas on socialization! I’m so tired of that argument against homeschooling. Our children’s museum offers homeschool art classes during the day and then the kids play together in the museum afterwards. Total win. We also do Trail Life and American Heritage girls and that’s been great for socializing, especially me! I also started a monthly meetup where a group of moms and their kids meet up at different parks. I would also add that my kids don’t like to go to the playground when no one is there, so we now go to parks that are more frequented by kids, no matter what school they attend. Finally, we also live in NC, and homeschoolers can go to the NC zoo in Asheboro for free twice a year. We went in November and it was great!

Volunteering!! It's free, it's helpful, it teaches responsibility and it's satisfying! When I was a teenager I volunteered by visiting an elderly care home each week and spent time with the residents and I learnt so much! Now I take my children to visit the elderly in our community and help them with jobs they might need assistance with, it is a lovely way to encourage relationships between generations. I believe socialisation across different ages is so important for everyone involved, and it is something you can really take advantage of when your kids are not in a classroom full time. Other ideas are planting trees in our community, litter picking groups, walking dogs from a shelter, caring for horses at our local stables and getting involved with cleaning and maintenance at our place of worship. 👍🏻

My daughter started doing martial arts! The place is run by homeschoolers and offers a huge discount. We found out about this at our homeschool group. Don’t forget about Facebook!!! My homeschool group is on Facebook. We did planning in August, and every Friday we have an activity. And anytime someone wants to do an extra play day, they can post when and where. It’s been a really good experience. They are a group of Christian moms and super helpful.

Hi Mandy I’m a Christian Momma of 3 boys. I have followed you on KZbin for a year now getting tips and tricks on homeschooling from you and your family. I know you don’t know me. So you have no reason to trust me. But as a sister in Christ , you have been coming out about your Disease you’ve been struggling with for 4 years plus years. I wanted to tell you I went to Africa when I was in my younger years and had food poisoning that pretty much crippled me. I to had suffered with major health problems in many ways. I feel like I can relate to you. It been on a very long journey of health for me and my 3 sons. But God has revealed so many tools to help heal our bodies. If you are interested in my journey, I total would be willing to share. I’m not selling anything to you , this is just knowledge that I’ve learned over the years. Also I encourage you to pray and ask God what to do and lead you instead of the Doctors. From my experience, American Doctors don’t know a lot about parasites and bugs from other countries. Plus even if they take tests , from my experience, they don’t show up on their tests. Anyways I’m not trying to say I have your answers but I have gone through 15 years of health issues in our home, with being told theirs nothing they can do to help. And we are finally seeing amazing results in our home in the area of their health . As my kids have suffered from me passing on to them my disease to them through the womb. Anyways I’m sure you get alot of people reach out. I’m just another momma concerned for you. I’ll be praying for you Gods protection and wisdom and knowledge in things that can give you hope.

We finally found a homeachool group in our area. We get together twice a month for fun stuff. I feel between that, library get togethers, and just normal life - I don't worry about socialization anymore.

These are all great ideas. I have a few more. My 6 year old daughter is a daisy scout. She gets together with 11 other girls of approximately her same age, every other week for an hour. They even have scout field trips. Our small town library has lots of programs and events for kids that we attend, like story time and crafting classes. Taking your children to the library during school hours often means any other families there are homeschoolers. And finally, let your kids play with the other children in the neighborhood. We live on road that has families with 7 other children on it, ranging from 2 years old to 11 years old. They all play nicely together, which I found amazing at first, but they all truly love playing with each other. I take my daughter everywhere with me, and she talks to everyone. She has never met a stranger. Again, we live in a small town, but she has befriended people like our grocery store cashiers, the librarians at the library, the receptionists at the doctors offices, and our empty nester neighbors. So just going out and leaving the house gives many “socialization “ opportunities.

When I moved back to my home state, I immediately looked up local homeschool groups in my city and those around me. I found several on Facebook. Found our tribe, but I dabble in a few tribes (so do other moms 💗) and expand our friendships/socialization. We live in an apartment still, and last summer my kids bonded with a child at the pool...come to find out that this would be their first year homeschooling 🥰 We go to parks, library, and then the typical errands where they chat it up with all the cashiers and workers 😁 We don't have much money, so I take advantage of all the free homeschool groups and inexpensive co-ops ($25-$40 a year per family). Many have free meet ups and clubs. We have park day every single week in one of them. The Moms get some social time and support during those for sure which is incredible 💗💗💗

@@mandy-maltz So true! I am kinda picky to be honest with who I prefer my kids to be around 💗 I tried to stick with groups that atleast had basic beliefs as us and then go from there. I do meet up with other groups from time to time though.

My husband is a firefighter and they are happy to have kids visit and do a little fire safety talk...of course they prefer getting a group together instead of one kiddo at a time 😉

Thank you for this! We haven’t found our people yet in our homeschool journey! I am not sure if I want to join a co-op but am feeling pushed to just to get my boys around other kids their age. A lot of prayer and faith that God will put the right people in our path! Just keep putting yourself out there!
