Another method that I use to identify males from females with finches who look very similar (Owl finches in my case) is to google the mating call and play it where the birds can hear it, males will usually then start singing in competition 👍

Thank You so much for sharing. My two female Society finches have hatch out a lot of my Gouldian finches and a owl finch. One of them has a bad foot but she's a great little lady . Love to set and raise up chicks

Just wanted to mention, I saw several of your birds there have some overgrown nails. I'd really recommend using natural perches in your breeding cages for the birds foot and nail health. You can just collect random sticks from outside and sanitize them by baking them or pouring boiling water over them. Dowels don't properly wear down the nails and also cause cramps for the birds due to being on the same surface so much. They can also end up causing sores.

Thanks for the suggestions. My flights all have natural branches but my smaller cages have the dowels. I’ll look and see what I can do to change that.

Couldn't agree more, I had four babies hatch and I have love this journey, scared as I was. All four are thriving and now I need to separate girls and boys, mum and dad because four babies are enough😅💜

I watched all 7 of my Society babies hatch and they are now over 2 years old, the only way I was able to tell them apart was to hear the different singing from male to female, so mama is with her 3 daughters and papa is with his 4 sons, they are wonderful birds, goofy and very smart, they give me so much joy everyday and crack me up constantly. I hand feed them baby spinach a couple times a week, plus they get a wide variety of different seed, egg food millet etc, and they love to snuggle up when it’s bedtime and I’ve even seen them stack on top of eachother lmao, just constant fun with these birds. If you need a good nest I loved using coconut nests, they loved those.

The society that's white with the dark mask over his eyes looks amazing. Probably the prettiest society I ever did see! The really dark one is going to look awesome, really stands out. I have the chance to get a pair of societies extremely cheaply, and thought I would take this chance to ask you a little about them. You say they are very friendly towards other birds, so that's good to hear. In my aviary, I am keeping 3 pairs of gouldians, 3 diamond doves, 3 king quail, currently 5 cherry finches and a pair of shaft tails that I am going to be selling as I have a pair of masked finches in quarantine, and since the shaft tails and the masked finches are closely related and can produce hybrids, I don't want to take that chance as the masked finches are very rare here and it took a lot of time to get them. Also the shaft tails are much more aggressive than the other birds so I think replacing them with the masked finches will make it a little more harmonious. Do you think a pair of societies would do well with them, and since my birds are mostly australian, my experience with trying to keep asian birds with them is that the asian birds will see much better when it is dark, and continue to stay active well after my australian birds have gone to sleep, which in turn would sometimes give them night frights. How does the societies fare in regards to this? I realize this is a long read, so if you read this, thank you :)

You should be just fine housing your societies with your other birds. Hopefully they all do well for you.

I have one male society finch - he sings. I think he needs a friend. He is about 9 months old. I have 3 parakeets and they all fly around in a room in my house. The budgies have a cage and the finch has a cage with a nest in it and he sleeps in the nest. The pet store where I got the finch said they can not tell the sex of the bird. I do not really want to breed finches-I just want a friend for my lone society finch. I contacted a breeder on craigslist who had some for sale not too far from me but did not hear back. I guess I will return to the pet store.

@@birdnerd I did - I got him one 2* weeks ago. They seem happy together and sleep together in a nest box but he is not singing anymore. Do male society finches stop singing once they. Have found a mate?

I have accidentally bred my birds. I had two males for about 7 years, one passed about 6 months ago, I replaced him with another so my other guy wasn't lonely. Then my other older guy passed as well...and I replaced him... and suddenly after 7 years of no babies, no problems...I hear whispery cheeps from the next about 10 days ago...and confirmed this past weekend I have two babies in the nest, maybe 3. The mom is very young, I didn't even realize she was a female. I have never raised a bird before.

Oh lord, I just heard you say that they will breed without a nest... lol, that was my fix for them, I was going to remove the nests. Can I leave the babies in the same cage as the parents? I would hate to interbreed them.
@birdnerd
@birdnerd 2 жыл бұрын
Let’s the parents raise and wean the chicks and then remove them from the parents as they will interbreed.
