Same here when I foster its usually for harder to breed African species that give me a hard time like some of the cordon bleus, pytilias, and other waxbills, but this year I had some new pairs of lutino parrot finches and masked (masked had already tossed) that we have not seen here in years and I needed to establish them quickly in my aviary so I fostered them.

Found 3 chick of my gouldian on the floor of the cage .Every time I put them back parents would throw them out again ...Thank you very much for the detailed explanation . I went and set up 3 cages with society finches .Hope for the best .Thank you again .Looking forward for your new videos

Nice video! I also prefer parent raised but I agree sometimes it just wont work. Another tip I got from someone which I found very helpfull is to pair a society who already raised the young, of the species you wish to foster, to a young bird who has never had young, like you said, so the inexperienced bird can learn from the experienced bird.

Thankyou Yoran. Yes that is a very helpfull tip. It can be hard sometimes to get young society finches to raise a species of african finches like for example a yellow wing pytilia so it helps to pair them to an older birds that has raise these in the past.

I got my zebra finches about a 2 years ago and ive been so lucky! They are such good parents its wild. They are so peacefull and chill, they even do it in open nest, meanwhile their kids are tipical aggresive zebras) mother is from german parents SFW pretty big(20gm) and dad is gray with fawn dna(14gm) so they have gray and fawn babies. i know it's kinda an odd choice, but i bought them when i didn't really know about genetics so i kinda screwed up))) Now i know that mom is kinda a big deal and i paired her with small gray😅

@@paradiseaviary yes, I banded yesterday the chick, only 1, there's still 2 eggs that haven't hatched yet. Question, I'm giving them every morning live food, meal worm, but every one will feed from it. So by 2 hours they all gone, should I have to feed them with some more by the end of the day again?? I just don't want them to abandon the chick. They don't see to like the egg food I give to them all as well

Thats great just be careful when banding them while they are in the nest sometimes the parents dont like this and could abandon if they feel a threat. Mines are also somewhat picky for the egg food it took some time to get them to actually eat it. I would feed the live food 2-3 times a day. In the morning, afternoon (if possible) and then again around 4pm or 5pm so they can feed again before the end of the day.

No leave those eggs in there try not to disturbe the nest anymore. Once the chick fledges the nest then you can go ahead and remove those eggs so the pair can reuse the nest

Thanks, I have 4 society finches, I should take the eggs from the zebra finch pair that are terrible parents, my beautiful snow white zebra is not a good breeder and her husband isn't very good either. Enjoyed the lecture, very clear and precise, again thank you.

Hi Debbie yes if the zebra pair is not taking care of the chicks I would go ahead and trasfer the eggs to save the next clutch. There are things that can be done to successfully get your pair of zebras to take care of their chicks but you can foster in the mean time. Just follow my advice on how to prepare the societies and transfer the eggs. Good luck !

Great video, so the society finches will automatically start incubation of the fake eggs even if they have not laid eggs themselves? When do you pull the fake eggs out of the biological parents?

@Vic k yes they will and it doesnt matter if theyvare 2 males 2 females or a pair. This species is very willing to nest. If you start day by day adding one fake egg to their nest by day 4 they will be incubating as long as they are in breeding condition. The fake eggs stay with the biological parents for about 12-14 days this is about the natural cycle of the egg before it hatches so it give the hen some time to rest. After 14 days I pull those fake eggs out and the pair decides when they want to start round 2.

Hi Khalil personally I prefer parent raised chick just like any other bird enthusiast. A chick that is raised by its biological parents in my opinion is a little bit more well rounded. Usually a week or two after they hatch the parents start a second nest and this allows the chicks to view and learn the biological parents mating behavior. I only use societies to save chicks that have been tossed, and eggs from pairs that have tossed. Now its also important to understand that sovieties are of great significance to us. Without them we wouldnt have the mayority of species we have available todays. Years ago when bird like the gouldians and other Australian species were imported in large numbers to the U.S breeders had to foster just to meet demand not only to send to the U.S but also once they got here they were fostered to try and establish them.

I very rarely keep trios, due to the fact that ive had problems in the past with trios who fight over who incubates and end up squashing the chicks. Societies are very overzealous when it comes to incubation so you have to keep an eye on them. At the moment I only have 3 cages with trios set up and i personally prefer all males, or 2 males 1 female so you dont end up with a nest filled with eggs.

They are very difficult to sex visually. Best way is to wait and hear the males singing. Put 3 or 4 birds in a cage and watch them from a distance the males will begin to sing within a few minutes.

Yes I put fake eggs in the society nest 1 each day until a full clutch is formed to get them sitting. Once they are sitting tight I swap and put the real eggs that they will foster

Yes but you have to do it just like I mentioned in the video. 1 egg a day early in the morning for about 5-6 days and by day 5 or 6 they should be sitting tight on those eggs. Just make sure the birds are also in good breeding condition. Birds that are not conditioned will not sit.

In my experience with societies, they do not have to be in breeding season. Let the parents hatch the chicks an then give the babies to the societies. It doesn't even have to be a true pair of societies, it can be two males or two females. Their parenting skills are so ingrained that they will feed practically anything you give them,
