My parents live in a senior apt. setup. It's really beautiful with all the "extras"!! There is a lovely aviary behind glass outside their apt. housing society finches for them to sit and observe!! My Dad has been a birder for the last 70 years. (he's 86 ) . I am thrilled that some people love birds so much that an old man can be happy again!!! Thank you to all the commercial aviary companies.You all have NO idea how much your aiayies mean to the elder folks!!!

I have always wanted to build a bird aviary in my house . After the whole COVID thing I had to move in much smaller surroundings . Perhaps someday . It's beautiful

The branches and plants are purchased from the same stores as my canary setups. The real green plants in the bottom middle are from a corner patch of grass in my backyard that I let grow very high. I make sure no pesticides are used around that area. They eat it and play around with it all day long chasing each other trying to play keep away with the long blades of grass.

I could look at this all day, such a lovely cage! I was thinking of getting canaries but I think they are too loud for me in an apartment, so I think society finches would be perfect! :)

Wow... bird heaven. Thought about adding some Gouldian Finches in there... they would look stunning with that lighting and against the plants.

That's an amazing story about the finch raising the canary and sorry to hear the mother passed. I was wondering your thoughts on having equal male to female ratio or would all males be just as good for their health and happiness? Also, what was your thoughts on the zebra finches and why did you choose society instead? I'm about to get a cage and start my hobby but I'm still unsure of zebra/society and all male/pairs. Any thoughts and inputs would be greatly appreciated. Beautiful setup, the plants are georgous in there and I like the stagered perches.

Robert Bock - what did you end up doing? I'm having the same exact questions...societies vs zebras and why, also considering keeping all males...
@robertbock4095 жыл бұрын
@@DaysFlyBy007 I started with 2 males, they were friends, got a 3rd, much fighting and returned him, got 2 females and many problems so I had to set up a second cage, now I have a bunch of babies and thinking about going back with just 2 males. Be warned though, I think the males are bisexual

Does anyone know where you can buy these exact cages online? I know these ones are from Orlando at the Bird store, but they do not have a website to ship the cages.

I'm looking to purchase a couple finches. Do they need big a big cage? What cage accessories do you highly recommend? How do they tolerate the weather?
@FFFERN66611 жыл бұрын
My cages are a 30” Long x 3’Height x 18” Depth, this is a good size cage. Go for a flight cage and remember the longer the cage the better. Try to get the longest cage possible, get two if you can afford it and combine them to make an even longer cage. You’ll need perches of different diameters, water dispensers, bathing water dish, and seed trays. Finches don’t really need toys so don’t waste your money. They sleep on the perches at night, so you don’t really need nest, unless you plan on breeding. I keep my birds in a screened in back porch and bring them in around late September early October when the temps start getting into the 50s. Research your birds region and try to mimic that temperature. Others may say birds don’t really need that big of a cage… I’d rather see my birds fly than hop from perch to perch in those little cages from the super pet stores.

I have heard that Fife canaries are easier to keep in groups. The males don't fight as much.

What are the cages called? Did you combine a few to make the long flight cage?

Hi Sean, regular florescent 48" light bulbs. I picked up the shop light unit from Home Depot for around $25.00.

Did you join cages together taking the middle section out?
@FFFERN6667 жыл бұрын
No Marie, the middle sections are still there for stability, I just cut them out leaving very little around the sides.
@mariem72507 жыл бұрын
I am not sure I understand. First you say that you left the middle sections in and then you say you cut them out....... Which part did you cut and which did you leave?? Did you leave in the main center bars , top bottom , middle and bottom for support cutting the middle thinner bars out? That;s my guess. The cages look awesome. How do you keep the artificial plants clean. Do the birds chew them up? What if the birds eat plastic?
@FFFERN6667 жыл бұрын
You guessed right. I cut out the middle thinner bars, otherwise the cage would lose stability. The plants are on the outside of the cage pressed up against the wall. They do get soiled from time to time... I just run them under hot water and rub off the poop to clean them off. The birds have lost interest in picking at the plants, the plastic is pretty tough and they have never been able to rip pieces off. If you notice in the middle of the cage I give them long grass, when available, so they pick at, eat or fly it into their nest for bedding. Just make sure the grass has not come into contact with any pesticides. Hope this helps.

The cages are Finca Melodia and they aren't strong enough to stand alone so I am also very pleased to hear how it was done. It's my favourite cage - cheaper and larger than most cages sold around.

You do know finches like smaller cages right
@arkteriusk46568 жыл бұрын
Say what? Birds in general prefer being outside in the largest "cage" there is, just like every other living thing. Society finches are domestic, but they still prefer as large cage as possible. What made you believe they like smaller cages? Because pet stores sell small cages? The only reason for this is to sell birds and cages, since most people want as little maintenance and that the cage don't take up a lot of space, and that's all there is to it

Nice video! Lovely flight cage!! My finches are getting a new cage later this week! I'm going to attach the original one to the top and cut the bars! They are quite happy at the moment, but when I finish their extension they'll be off their tits with happiness and joy!!! P.s check out the Mandela effect on youtube!! You will be astonished!!!
