This is a story that we all basically grew up with here in Uruguay and it always amazed me, still does even more now seeing a fictional version of it. It's crazy what they endured, even doctors can't believe it, it's so shocking both a tragedy and a miracle so we call it both el milagro de los Andes and La Tragedia de Los Andes. @@Donoblast

@@kira-zk6op

@@Chuuzus As someone who knows the story well it was very nice watching you react to it and empathise with them. Although Numa eventually ate he never got used to it as the rest of the survivors did, and lost an incredible amount of weight. As a south american, I am so glad people are finally knowing the true story of the Andine Tragedy. For most people it is just the spooky story of people that ate each other to survive, but Society of the Snow show the story in a more human way.

When it came out, I saw the 1993 movie "Alive" that told the same story. I don't know how accurate it was to what happened, but one of the loveliest things I learned was that people of Uruguay never shamed them. They were treated with compassion and as heroes for their incredible tenacity in survival. I don't think that would happen today, at least in online spaces. I'm grateful for them that during that time, they were embraced and loved through their horrible, horrible tragedy.

I am an Australian and I remember their survival being on the news back in 1972. I read ‘Alive’ in about 1974. I saw the movie ‘Alive’ 4 times in the cinema and many times on DVD. I have read 5 books written by the survivors (those of Nando, Roberto, Carlitos, Eduardo and Pedro) and I own but have not yet read Coche’s book. ‘Society of the Snow’ was the first book I read this year and I have watched this movie three times so far.

You said "Justice for Numa", so I want you to consider this: 16 people survived and got to tell their story. 29 people passed away, who never go to do so. This movie was made as a way to give a voice to the voiceless. Numa was the last one to die, and in interviews with the survivors, they all talk about him is a very powerful figure they all considered a hero, and whom they all respect. Making Numa the protagonist and making it possible for him to tell his own story allows him to live on, much like every other passenger on that flight lives on not just in the 16 souls that survived, but in the souls of their 150 descendants that have come to this world since then. This movie achieves a level of justice for all those 29 people like nothing else ever had before.

Two things you missed: They did NOT wait until Numa died so they could go out, they needed the sleeping bag to be ready, it was ready almost the same day Numa died, or slightly after, also they wanted to leave early to have more sunlight time 2.- Gustavo Zerbino took a memory, souvenir, an object of each dead friend and put it in a luggage, thats why he said he is not leaving without it, he had all the souvenirs of the dead in there

Going out to seek help was perceived as almost certain death, a sacrifice made for others. So Numa's final message was to give Canessa the push he needed to go with Nando, since Nando was going to go out even if it was alone. And what drove Nanado, despite his cerebral concussion and the loss of his sister and mother, in his own words, was that he could not bear that his father also had to bury his son.

The director said they choose Numa as the narrator for two reasons, one, he was that last impulse they needed to finally go and look for help, it was what inspired them and finally convinced Roberto (who was scared of going). The survivors said they all loved Numa and his death was really moving for them. And two, because the amazing director Bayona, who became obsessed with the story around 10 years ago and wanted to represent this tragedy as respectfully and realistically as possible (he bought the rights to the book named as the movie, a recompilation of the survivors testimonies, in 2012 but wanted the movie to be as accurate as possible to real life, and that included being filmed in spanish. Because of this, Hollywood didn't want to give him the needed budget, and the only one who finally did it was Netflix almost ten years later) anyways, Bayona felt like everybody talked about the survivors, but many neglected talking about the deceased, who were equally heroes. Having Numa narrate served not only to tell the story of the survivors but also being a voice for those who didn't make it home. Sorry, long comment, loved your reaction ❤😢

What’s wild is that a lot of studies were done afterwards, and most of the survivors did NOT end up with PTSD-I imagine because they were a team beforehand and banded together-they weren’t alone, and in real life they said they felt very close to god, as being from a catholic Christian school, they prayed together every morning. However, in real life, the rescue took 2 days-they couldn’t carry everyone at once due to flying conditions in the helicopters, so they sent the weakest first, and half stayed on the mountain for one more night, along with 4 rescue workers who brought food. The survivors didn’t end up with PTSD, but the rescue workers, who stayed for only one night, DID. For the survivors, the gruesomeness was gradual and they had each others’ love and support throughout, while the rescue workers were thrust suddenly into such horribleness, skeletons, etc. Social support is one of the biggest protectors against developing PTSD after severe trauma-I’m so glad they were a team beforehand with a shared faith, and not a group of total strangers, as I imagine the outcome would have been very different.

Bayona (movie director) said that he wanted to put Numa as the protagonist even when he died in the mountains because he would represent all the people that didn't survive. He wanted to give "a voice" to all dead people in that incident because they needed to be listened too. It was like a tribute for all of them. Actually, he asked for permission to do this to Numa's family and have to convince them because they didn't wanted at the beginning. In the end, Numa's family was happy because Bayona was respectful with Numa's memory. All the survivors too, they said that this movie is the BEST representation of what and how they lived this. P.S: Some of the survivors made a "cameo" in the movie :).

@anthonymorales2915 In the movie, when Roberto and Nando are rescued, It show a scene where Roberto is on his knees burying something (when their names are said by the father of Carlitos Páez), I think that "thing" he buried was parts of Numa's body. The last person who died was Numa and he said that he wanted to "give" them his body to his friends so he helped them to survive so maybe he was the last "resource" for them. If I'm not wrong, I read that authorities never recovered the bodies of those who died. Remember too that Roberto and Nando were walking for 10 days... Gustavo was absolutely serious. He grabbed things from the ones who passed away and put them all in the luggage, that's why he was SO adamant about taking it with him. Some time after the rescue, he went to the families' houses to give them at least one little object from their loved ones. He's said doing that was what gave him hope and strength in the mountain, because he had a purpose and it was not letting any of the families without a tangible little something from their loved ones. And I think, the first mom he gave something to, was Coco's. But not in her house. She went to the place the survivors were taken, because Coco's name was Gustavo as well, and when the family heard the list of the names, they thought it was Coco (not Zerbino), so the mom went to welcome him, just to find out there, that he had died. And it was in that moment that Zerbino gave her what he had of him (I think it was the letter). This story is SO heartbreaking but SO interesting as well. Like, yes, they waited until Numa died, but not because they didn't care, they were scared, it had been proven impossible until that point, to climb and get out of the mountain, but the moment Numa died Roberto made the decision. That gave them that last push to go and find life again, so to speak. And to think that Numa didn't know them at the beginning and I think it was Zerbino the one who said, that Numa was probably the most loved one up there in the mountain. Because he did everything he could to help and save them. I'm sorry this was so long and also, English is not my first language (sorry if this sucks). Which makes me love this reaction even more, because yay my language! Hahahaha. But it was great and I'm sure I'll be rewatching (just like I keep rewatching the movie because !!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Vasco's father (the boy who died, having hallucinations screaming for his father), returned to the cordillera to take his son's remains even though repatriating a body was illegal. He had problems with the law, but managed to bury his son in Uruguay. Coco's mother expressed in an interview that she was relieved with herself that each of the survivors had a piece of her son (Coco's parents and his girlfriend traveled to Chile thinking he was alive because of a mistake with the list). Marcelo's mother did not have the courage to see her son's childhood friend (one of the survivors) again, because he survived but her son did not. Carlitos's father was adamant in the hope that his son would return alive (Marcelo played his own father in the film). Nando's father started dating a new woman in the time frame of the incident, they say he even got rid of Nando's things (thinking he was dead). Nando says that his father was what motivated me to come back. The actors have a good relationship with the survivors and with the family of the deceased.

At the end of the film, when the credits begin, images of the real people who suffered the tragedy appear, some photos were taken by themselves there. And the part that is seen in black and white from the helicopter when they go to rescue them and they jump for joy down in the snow, is the real recording.. Greetings!
@frannymcb_
@frannymcb_ 5 ай бұрын
The director said it's not the original recording of the rescue, they just used film and visual effects to make it appear that way. Apparently it is so similar that some of the survivors thought it was the real clip too! But everything filmed is new, just for the movie.

Fun facts -Carlos Roque’s sister, a day before the avalanche went to them, she saw her brother in dreams telling her goodbye, after the avalanche she felt her brother didn’t make it. -In the list of the survivors, they only said "Gustavo” without specifying which Gustavo was, Gustavo Zerbino or Gustavo "Coco” Nicolich, when the helicopter went down the Andes, Coco Nicolich’s father went to Daniel Fernandez and said "In which helicopter is my son?” Daniel told him "Coco didn’t came” Coco’s father surprised "What? What do you mean he doesn’t come?” "I mean, that he is not here.” - When Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa encounter civilization, Carlitos Páez dreamed that they reached somewhere, he told the others and they turned on the radio, and immediately heard that they found them. - In Nando Parrado’s book, he says that Susy and him where the best of friends although they were brothers, he says that when they were in the mountain, Nando remembered that they were in the beach, and Nando didn’t went to the ocean or had fun, he always was watching Susy, taking care of her, he was kinda frustrated because Susy felt she was a bit robust. "How could I explain her that when I saw her the only thing I saw was beauty?” He tried to remember the feeling of hugging Susy, the touch of her hair, and her warm breath, he tried to remember everything, he says that he didn’t even separated from his sister. 😭💔

I loved your reaction. Thank you. According to the survivors, Numa died because he gave everything for the group and because he started eating very late. Everyone says he was an exceptional person. The paper he wrote before he died is real. Everything is real. If you looked at the credits, the original photos appear, the real Numa also appears. Gustavo did not want to leave the suitcase because inside were all the letters and objects of the deceased and he had to give them to the families, so he sat on it and said if the suitcase doesn't go up, I won't go up, that was true. Kisses from Chile and I recommend you watch THE IMPOSSIBLE, by the same director of this film, another true story of survival of a family in the Thailand tsunami, spoken in English with Tom Holland and other renowned actors.

The director is Spanish, the cast is Argentinian, Uruguayan, and more, and the crew is from all over the world so it's basically an international film, with diversity and inclusion working at its prime in the making of an extraordinary movie. Numa doesn't eat because of morals, it's just his conviction of not eating a person who DID NOT consent to it.

Great reaction. I was heartbroken about Numa, but honestly, all of them deserved to survive, not just him. And if you makes you feel any better, the survivors never really had full blown ptsd...some emotional scars for sure but they all pretty much went on to lead happy full healthy lives, probably because of the kindless and love they all displayed to each other on the mountain.

The actors of the movie are barely known in most cases. The one who plays Roberto is nominated for the Goya revelation actor. Titin was a rugby player, not even an actor. They are all Uruguayan and Argentinians. The movie was made by the amazig director J.A Bayona who previously did "The Impossible" and has an incredible and respectful point of view of tragedies Most of the survivals appears in the film in small role, such as Carlitos Paez playing the role of his father (the man in the phone at the end who says the names of the survivors as says 'Carlos Paez my son'). The premiere of the movie in Uruguay adjoined for the first time in 50 years the families of the survivors with those who couldn't make it, and through this movie, a wound was heal, and people cried and hugged. It was something bigger that any of them could have ever imagine

As an argentinian, thank you so so much for reacting to this movie and its story. The survivors said this movie is the closest thing of what they lived. They also do a few cameos in the movie (Nando opening the door for the actors playing his family at the airport, Roberto Canessa is one of the doctors welcoming the survivors when the arrive to the hospital, Carlitos Paez as his father reading the names). There is so much to this story that is not in the movie, hopefully you can search more about it because is extraordinary. Numa being the protagonist AND STILL DIE is one of the most heartbreaking things, but it makes so much sense! He was the last one to die, and survivors said his death was painful for all and for that, they got strength to look for help (as a slap in the face, they realized they needed to start doing something else). Thank you so much, and please please please! Look at the interviews the survivors did, and the Making of the Society of the Snow done by Netflix. It gives SO MUCH MEANING.

OMG i didn't expect your reaction to this movie. It's so beautifully done, the acting, make-up, cinematography... everything. The director and the film are spanish, but the actors are from Uruguay and Argentina so the accents are loyal to the real thing. Everyone in Latin America and Spain remembers and knows this story, from the eldest to the youngest, because it was so tragic. Hollywood made a film back in the day, but it focused on the human-eating and it was not faithful at all. This one it's so well-crafted because it focuses on the bond and the real impact the ones that didn't made it alive had on the rest (that's why Numa narrates, because the survivors were as important as the ones who died). They were two full months up there alone, i can't imagine the desperation and trauma. It's also nominated for best make-up at the oscars and they deserve to win. I love that you watched this film, it's soul-wrecking but so so BEAUTIFUL

Yes, Gustavo was serious, in the bag, he had belongings of the dead, a memento for their families. Sadly, these people died but their deaths weren't in vain. If they hadn't died none of them would have survived. And Numa's the narrator cuz Bayona wanted to give a voice to the dead. Media outlets only focused on the antropophagia and how outrageous it was for them to survive in this way, so he showed the two sides of the coin.

Hello, how are you? As a Uruguayan, I'd like to contribute a bit to the history and the movie. -The actors are Argentine and Uruguayan, and we share practically the same Spanish accent. However, they trained to speak as the survivors did at that age to add even more realism. -Everything was recreated as it was in the 70s in Uruguay, including taxis, the airport, bars, churches, everything. -Part of the survivors appears in the movie. Fernando Parrado opens the door at the airport for the actor playing him, and the actresses playing his mom and sister. Carlos Paez plays his own father, reading the names of the survivors near the end. Roberto Canessa is the doctor accompanying the actor representing him when they arrive at the hospital. -In Uruguay, we don't have mountains or snow, and they didn't have the necessary clothing for the cold since the city they were going to in Chile didn't require it. In conclusion, a very good review of the movie. greetings from Uruguay!

Think of this, Numa's death was unavoidable considering his injury. There were no antibiotics up there. Roberto and Gustavo could only do what they could do with no sterile facilities. Numa's death was their sign to walk out. Without his death, Nando and Roberto would never have done it. It was as if Numa's death was the final straw, as it were. Numa's death was sad, but then there were 29 other deaths that were just as sad. Just as impactful. Liliana's leaving four children. Nando holding his sister until she died knowing his mother's body lay outside dead. They also lost Marcelo, the team captain. Think of it this way, everyone both alive and dead all played their part in the crash. They all were either giving of their bodies to help the living survive.

Im from Peru (in South America), ths story was nothing new for us latinos, so we weren't exactly expecting much from this movie. But man we were blown away, this accident is like general culture for us, everyone knows how it goes, but this movie wrecked EVERYONE. The decision to narrate though Numa... was amazing, wasn't expecting it. The survivors said that Numa was one of the most helpful guys up in the mountains, he was so proactive, losing him was the wake up call to go search for help. I really recommend watching bts footage and interviews, the survivors and the actors have formed beautiful relationships. Great reaction guys, I really appreciate this one Some facts: Nando was "brain dead" for 3 days, that's why he was left outside with the deceased, but the cold helped his brain and that's why he survived. Roberto was a first year med student, he actually didn't know much at all, he just asumed the roll of a doctor bc he was their best shot. Numa brought so much hope to the survivors, they said in interviews that he was always optimistic and proactive, he was always finding new ways of helping others. His death shocked everyone drastically and that's why Roberto wanted to find help as soon as possible, no more deaths after Numa. They were rescued 10 days (Roberto and Nando literally hiked for 10 days) after Numa's death...they said that if numa hadn't passed, they wouldn't have found the incentive to go search for help... Numa saved them. All actors in this movie are total rookies and it's their first time on the big screen, so you can imagine how hard they worked. They literally shot the movie in the mountains (not in the Andes tho, they tried but it was too cold, they shoot in Sierra Nevada Spain), the director wanted to make it as real as possible, so they really kind of froze in some scenes. They recorded cronologically, and the actors lost around 20kg, real tough. Some of the survivors were involved in the movie making, helping making it even more accurate. Roberto Canessa, Nando Parrado and Carlitos Paez (he acted as his own father calling his own name) even made cameos. EVERYTHING in this movie is based on real events not like Alive, the added some accidents to make it more dramatic, the survivors didn't even like Alive, but they loved Society of the Snow bc of it's autthenticity)

What's also crazy is that the plain crashed on the Argentine side of the Andes (which is the biggest mountain range in the world) and if Nando and Roberto had walked towards the East, they would have found a Hotel 20 km away. But because of the really fast winds slowing the plain down and the pilots not using the instruments during the last part of the flight, they thought they had already crossed onto Chile. Nowadays you can stay at that Hotel when you do the hike to the crash site.
