The part where the princess asks them “how many phi” their horns are confused me so I went through a bit of a rabbit hole. I believe this is a reference to the Krumbein phi scale, a logarithmic scale meant to describe the size of particles, eg clay vs sand vs gravel vs boulders. However, the Krumbein phi scale does not seem to be commonly used (well really, for anything, but more relevantly) for sandpaper, at least via free public information. The most common standards are specified in standards from CAMI/UAMA, FEPA, JIS, or the micron standard. The UAMA standard is spread across a bunch of pdfs each of which costs $14 so I’m not gonna check them. BUT, the Wikipedia page for “Grain size” mentions the Krumbein phi scale. And that page is listed in the ‘See also’ section of the page for sandpaper. So I assume the translator went to look up what unit is used to describe roughness for English audiences, and settled on phi.
