Sociolinguistics and its scope| Micro and Macro Sociolinguistics with examples|

Sociolinguistics is currently one of the most popular and hotly debated branches of linguistics. In this brief video, I have given introductory account of sociolinguistics and how it can be defined. This video covers the following topics:
• What is Sociolinguistics?

• Scope and Nature of Sociolinguistics
In the intro of video I have given etymology of word sociolinguistics. The word sociolinguistics is actually combination of two words “Socio” and “linguistics”. Socio here stands for society and linguistics for study of language. In this loose sense, sociolinguistics can be defined as the study of relationship between language and society. Hudson defined it as “Sociolinguistics is the study of language in relation to society.”
I have further elaborated that what type of relationship exists between society and language. Society simply means any group of people living together. This group of people uses a tool of communication to interact with each other that we called a language. But this is not as simple as it looks. Language is very complex phenomenon and it cannot be defined easily without ambiguity.
Further I have elaborated what is relationship between language and society. Language and Society cannot be totally divorced from each other. They are interlinked and interwoven concepts in human civilization. Any civilization cannot exist without language and in the same way any language cannot exist without its speech community.
Fishman, Hudson and Ronald Wardhaugh have divided sociolinguistics into two branches or subfields. These are:
a) Micro-Sociolinguistics: Micro- Sociolinguistics is branch of sociolinguistics that is concerned with investigating the relationships between language and society with the goal being a better understanding of the structure of language and of how languages function in communication.
b) Macro- Sociolinguistics: sociology of language is trying to discover how social structure can be better understood through the study of language.
Finally I have discussed the scope of Sociolinguistics and the topic that we study in sociolinguistics such as different varieties of language including dialectology, pidgin, Creole, and register etc.
