I remember my first real Philosophy class in junior college, I was fascinated by the bounty of ideas. Socrates was one of my favorites and I still have that text book to this day. Thank you for this content. Top Notch as always.

It's well known that Socrates very rarely shared much of his own ideas. He sure had ideas, but wasn't that bothered with sharing them. What he did was something different. He challenged the opinions of others. He challenged your position on a subject, and more often than not made you question what you thought your opinion of said subject actually is. That was his A game. And he aced it like no other.

I believe in the metaphysical Socrates. I remember crafting spells and his soul indeed survived the death of the body. We were being directed (mastered) by Socrates' daemon (Draggus) all along. It is possible to have access to the soul during life as well, but you gonna go down an entire rabbit hole in order to do that.

The ideas attributed to be Socrates' are just as valuable whether we ever know who Socrates was or if he ever existed. I think the question is one that should be studied once one was completely conquered the virtuous life, for that is more important than learning about Socrates the man.

The whole idea of the 'ownership of ideas' is a pointless discussion to begin with. Even so called original thinkers borrow so heavily on the ideas of others they are all too often just adding a cherry to a cake baked by others.

Plato never said in the quote you provided that he believed in an immortal soul. Rather, he sighted that people he thought intelligent believed in one. From what I can gather, Socrates preferred to question the human existence and how one arrives at a belief (purpose, morality, etc.) whereas Plato questioned belief directly, as in his theory of forms (is all that we see and comprehend really just the shadow of something else?).

Archangel Raphael that’s how it seems from fresh eyes for sure. I do writing exercises like this myself, I decide to embody a character I am not and write from their perspective rather than my own. Often times this will just be a characterized version of one of my opinions or ideals pushed to an extreme to test the weight of the opinion.

@@miffednelly4782 Every single thing mentioned in this comment is wrong. Diogenes Laertius was not a contemporary of Socrates. Their lives are separated by at least 500 years. And he did mention Socrates. The 2nd chapter of his work "Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers" is literally titled "Socrates, with his predecessors and followers". Well, I guess you at least got the part about Diogenes Laertius discussing important philosophers right lmao

Death is not worth living! Morality is the uncovering of life, to which life is covered; though this runs through ideas of what is disdained and becomes ludicrous when you see life is made to be covered, as ideas do not just expel themselves from space. Socrates is lost in the eccentricities in enigmatic ways, a source of spelling knowledge.

People nowadays are not too interested in history and philosophy. Many consider it as "boring", "exhausting", "nonsensical", "stupid", etc. The society we live in - particularly its younger population - likes different things, follows different trends. Look at currently trending videos on KZbin - those are mostly modern music videos, or some dumb vines that have gone viral. Perhaps there are a lot of people who _would like_ to study and talk about historical / philosophical topics, but don't do it because of fear that others would think of them as "different", "special snowflakes". It's our fault that history and philosophy are marginalized. The most important thing we can do right now is not to stay true towards our interests, no matter what others may be talking behind our backs.

It seems to me that Aristophanes' writings should be excluded by the very nature of his work. The likelihood of him wanting to depict Socrates as he truly was is small considering that he was creating entertainment, and philosophy is not entertaining for most. Caricatures may offer insight but should only be ranked among the lowest quality sources. The charges levelled against Socrates in Aristophanes' "Clouds" seem quite out of character for the Socrates presented by Plato and others, and these latter presentations of the man are much more in agreement. I also think that the Athenians were looking to place blame for their recent defeat by Sparta, and Socrates' association with some disgraced politicians and generals did not do him any favors. The charges that led to his eventual death seem to be in line with this idea. I think that if the charges, such as Socrates being a thief, as presented by Aristophanes, were true then we would have some record of prior legal troubles for Socrates, or the charge presented at his trial. Yet the only charges made against him were of a nature that suggests to me that they had nothing on him. I think the license taken in the reenactment from the 70's, which is here on KZbin, is probably a good guess as to what actually went down at the trial. And all of this suggests to me that the philosophical Socrates that Plato wrote about is probably the actual truth. This explanation provides the most consistency for the beliefs and actions presented by all the sources. An idea like the daemon of Socrates is, given the charges at trial, probably accurate, and the fact that it supposedly guided him morally suggests to me that he was a moral man. I also think that an important point is missed when wondering whether they are Plato's or Socrates' ideas. Either Plato believed the same things Socrates did, or he didn't. If he did not agree with Socrates then why would he immortalize him as a wise man? It is much more likely that Plato's ideas were the same as those of Socrates, because that is where he learned them, and thus it would not even matter if the events depicted by Plato actually happened, because they would still be accurate. But they are most likely accurate representations of actual events, considering that if we concede Plato was influenced by Socrates enough to immortalize him in writing, then he would also remember specific lines of reasoning and ideas from those teachings.

Why
@skyjack85414 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The reason why ppl can't come to an agreement on this is bc of lack of knowledge. Christ and Socrates are one in the same. Their lives parallel. In add, the letters that make up Christ also make up Socrates. Linguist intentially do this for clear knowledge of the truth. We live in a world where truths are misconstrued and or confounded, where ppl lie so that clear knowledge can't be attained or where they blend facts with fiction. The bible is a perfect example. A literary work of truths and lies blended together to cause confusion and unclear knowledge or a distortion of truth. When this is done clear knowledge becomes distorted. But language speaks for itself. Who came up with idea of deceit and trickery etc. I didn't but someone who is committing the acts does. I wasn't born yesterday. Thus, I KNOW through research and studying linguistics (the SCIENCE of language) that Socrates and Christ are one in the same.
