Can't imagine those initial moments after the incident, when you realize you're not just dead - you've literally got hours before your body starts to fall apart in agonizing pain. And as a nuclear physicist, he would absolutely be aware of everything that was coming.
@Sundablakr
@Sundablakr 2 жыл бұрын
At that point I'd grab the nearest revolver and go out relatively pain free. Can't imagine anything worse than a slow agonizing death over the course of a couple weeks as radiation poisoning slowly consumes your body.

Yeah I would just end it painlessly before the radiation pain kicks in

IIRC this was very early on in nuclear research, so even at that point i don't think radiation sickness was very well understood.

It’s because those two bombs were actually aerial detonations rather than ground explosions. The victims of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were killed by the sheer explosive power of both bombs rather than any damage from radiation In fact, most of the radiation was blown away and dispersed due to it going critical in the air instead of on the ground. This is why both Hiroshima and Nagasaki are both perfectly fine to visit to visit today, but Chernobyl will still be radiated for a LONG ass time after we die

I had the opportunity to tour the building this happened in at Los Alamos. Worked there for a couple years. They have tape marking the spots where the scientists were supposedly standing. They schedule tours if anyone is near the area and interested in seeing it in person. There is also a museum in town dedicated to much of the research done at the lab including replicas of "Fat Man" and "Little Boy."
@Immortal_BP
@Immortal_BP 2 жыл бұрын
how accurate was it to the movie clip?
@cainiak
@cainiak 2 жыл бұрын
@@Immortal_BP Based on my non-artistic memory, the building looks pretty similar to what you see around timestamp 9:45, minus all the junk everywhere. High ceiling, but it is not a very large building in terms of square footage. The floors had construction paper and tape covering them up, with tape in the shape of an X marking where the scientist supposedly stood. The tour guide walks you to the building and lets you pass through it, explaining its historical significance similar to what you listen to in this video. It would have been much cooler if they spiced it up a bit with a replica of the demon core...
@heartt4994
@heartt4994 2 жыл бұрын
i assume there isnt radiation still lingering there right
@cainiak
@cainiak 2 жыл бұрын
@@heartt4994 Correct. Based on some quick googling, Gamma/Neutron radiation has a very short half life in comparison to Beta/Alpha. The demon core briefly emitted gamma/neutron radiation. Hypothetically, if the location of the Demon Core event was somehow still contaminated, the DOE would likely not let civilians on tour into the area - rather, perhaps someplace safe nearby? Typically, radworker training, site-specific training, clearance, and justification would be required to be in any sort of contamination area.

Turns out smart people can do dumb things too. Why would you play with getting deaded from radiation. It's a truly horrible way to go.
@Peacemaker8D
@Peacemaker8D 2 жыл бұрын
This was early in the discovery of radiation, where a lot of the “dangers” of radiation were not being as properly regulated as it is now But your comment is true, you’d be surprised in universities still has many people handle very hazardous chemicals very recklessly.
@Jason-kp4vc

There's a quote that I don't quite recall, something about repetition breeding complacency. When you start off working with dangerous shit you'll be worried and follow safety protocols as much as you can. Eventually with familiarity and repetition without incident, you're prone to getting lax with safety. A professor of mine told us a story about how his coworker who had worked for 20 years with a machine got his finger pulled off because he was careless just one time and used the wrong foot to work the machine.
@MeXoof
@MeXoof 2 жыл бұрын
The smart thing about both of the incidents is that the person who fucked up undid the criticality so it wouldn't be an even bigger problem. Probably the first thing some people would do is run away without undoing it. These two's quick thinking minimized what could have happened

safety wasnt a priority back in the days, it would just happen as if it was another day of someone dieing, and people are just overconfident in their abilities, even at these days there are many people like that, its just that these days you will be forced to comply to safety regulations instead of having a choice.
