Sodium ion would be good for limited life renewable energy devices like garden lights, consumer electronics especially Bluetooth speakers and similar, power tool batteries, and bulk energy storage devices from UPS systems to solar power systems to grid buffer systems. Lithium is better for applications where weight and gross energy density is the primary concern. Sodium can do away with the need for cobalt as cheap iron can be used as the acceptor electrode. The storage electrode can be made of silicon boron and carbon.❤

I think sodium batteries are the future, but only if the next years are spent researching for more energy efficient appliances to compensate for the lower energy density of sodium

The major differences is the sodium-ion don't explode and its a big advantage compared to the lithium ion 🔥🔥🔥

It is not so energy dense compared to lithium ion is alright, since its manufacturing process is much friendly to our environment and the price doesn't cost a moon and a star. 🧐
@rich1051414 Жыл бұрын
Current battery chemistry is optimized for lithium, and although sodium is practically a drop in replacement to lithium, the chemistry likely wouldn't be as ideal for sodium as it was for lithium. Perhaps there is room for improvement.

Recent lithium advances will render sodium batteries to mainly grid-ttype storage use. Sodium is far heavier and 30% less energy dense than Li. Video is primarily for clicks.

A basic science lesson : Atomic # of Lithium = 3 Atomic # of Sodium = 11 Both Li+ and Na+ carry single positive charge. Na+ has a weight penalty of 3.67 times that of Li+ One needs almost 4 times the mass of Lithium to make a battery that can store equivalent amount of charge with Sodium. This is a fundamental fact in nature which you cannot overcome. Sodium batteries will never reach the energy density per kg of Lithium batteries. Too much hype circulating. Yes, Sodium is cheaper!!! Good candidate for ESS. Can potentially replace LFP for ESS applications. I am in the battery industry.

while sobering, this guy (caperider) is the only one in the comments giving you the critical information you need to know.👍 so unfortunately what he just demonstrated is that anyone who doesn't know how to read the basic "trends" and "groupings" of the Periodic Table, is really not qualified to speak on the subject of Na batteries Vs Li batteries, or any other battery chemistry for that matter.
@dusanstojanovic37596 ай бұрын
to provide the same energy capacity (100 kWh), a sodium-ion battery would need to be approximately 60% heavier and 67% larger in volume compared to a lithium-ion battery
@caperider11606 ай бұрын
@dusanstojanovic3759 exactly! Perhaps Na is a good choice for ESS but not for mobility
@dusanstojanovic37596 ай бұрын
@@caperider1160 My view is totally different. I will gladly accept 800kg battery (vs 500kg like in Tesla S) for: much cheaper car, much quicker charging time, much greener than Li-ion... also I am very much biased being that I'm from Serbia and extremely opposed to Lithium mining in Serbia.

Sodium ion batteries have a terrible discharge voltage curve. Lithium stays at nominal voltage until around 80% usage then it drops off quickly. But with sodium the voltage drops immediately and very quickly. This alone makes sodium ion batteries useless for applications without constant charging such as cars or portable devices without charging. The only usage I can see for sodium batteries is as storage for off grid applications with constant electricity generation like a water wheel where you would want storage of excess energy but don’t have breaks in the supply. With solar or wind the sodium battery just won’t have the reserve voltage to be effective replacement for lithium.
