Their debut album, Rest In Violence, is so far my favorite album of 2020.

Sodom's best albums : Agent Orange equal with the self titled (2006) / then Code Red / M-16 / Persecution Mania / Better Off Dead. I haven't listened much to stuff after the self titled, but when Bermann joined, he saved the band, they had a couple meh albums after Better Off Dead, which itself wasn't that great, about half the album is okay then the rest forgettable. I hear Bermann left the band before their latest album and EP, but thankfully the guitarist from Agent Orange is the one that came back to replace him. Addendum : Man, Tom Angelripper's voice is awesome

Wow, I was not expecting this. Sodom is my favourite thrash metal band and Agent Orange is my favourite thrash song/album of all times. Sodom started as a black metal band. Their music was a combination of Celtic Frost and Venom at the very beginning. In time they developed into a thrash metal band. Agent Orange is their 1989 album. In 1987 with the album Persecution Mania, they started to write songs about the atrocities of war and they do ever since. Singer/founder Tom Angelripper is especially interested in the Vietnam War. In 2001 they had released the album M-16 which is entirely about the Vietnam War.

Only the earliest songs by Sodom ("In the Sign of Evil" EP and partially "Obsessed by Cruelty" LP) can be attributed to black metal, and with the advent of Blackfire style became strictly thrash metal, and this became the basis for the success of the band: started with the "Persecution Mania" LP, and with the release of the "Agent Orange" LP they became mega-popular. So Sodom is a clearly thrash metal band, not black metal (for black metal you need to hear Venom, Celtic Frost, etc.) And they rightfully belong precisely to the CLASSIC thrash metal groups, along with Destraction, Kreator and so on. Be happy, stay hungry and ride the Metal! Peace!

Just yesterday I mentioned how Celtic Frost should definitely be in this week, a band that essentially played thrash, but who influenced Black Metal with what they were doing in the 80's... well this isn't Celtic Frost, but the idea is kind of the same, and Agent Orange is a damn great Thrash album. I actually have a Sodom CD on my desk right now.. not sure why, I have their stuff in digital and who even has a CD Player these days, but hey, it looks good so I keep it around, haha. This leaves only 2 songs left in the "Essentials Week" I presume... so likely no Savatage or Celtic Frost, and definitely no Atheist, Bolt Thrower, Entombed, Edge of Sanity or Gamma Ray (just to name a few). Oh, and also Dark Tranquillity the only of the notable pioneers of Swedish Melodeath that you didn't react to (and the most consistent band among them). Too bad, maybe next time... I suggest a "Non-Metal Essentials Week", where people then proceed to pick Death Metal bands :P EDIT: I just reached the end, can't believe Sori gave this a 5. I actually thought she was enjoying it. But yeah, like I said yesterday when I mentioned Celtic Frost, I don't think you'd really enjoy it 30 years later and after all you've heard, so not surprised it happened with Sodom.
@ArdensSedVirens15 жыл бұрын
I think Vin would probably enjoy Celtic Frost, as he likes thrashy riffs and Tom G's riffing is definitely nothin' to scoff at. Sori I have no clue, I'm always shocked at what she ends up liking and disliking, haha. "Oh, and also Dark Tranquillity the only of the notable pioneers of Swedish Melodeath that you didn't react to (and the most consistent band among them)." Well, they did listen to In Flames, but not even from their melodeath period and who knows if that'll ever happen. I'd also personally count Eucharist as a "notable Swedish melodeath pioneer" since they were possibly the first in the Gothenburg scene that were actually playing melodic death metal. I mean I get why they often aren't, and there's no chance Vin and Sori will ever listen to Eucharist, I'm just Perpetually Upset they never get that recognition considering how ace their material was.
@MrZeze875 жыл бұрын
@@ArdensSedVirens1 You are totally right, i pretty much forgot what songs they even did for In Flames, but yes, they basically haven't really heard In Flames yet. As for Eucharist, it's a fair point, i shouldn't have said "the only". I don't listen to that much melodeath these days, but Dark Tranquillity was one of the bands that really got me into metal so I was giving them "a shout", in my rant. But yes, I remember hearing "The Velvet Creation" and it was a fine album indeed. Maybe i'll give it a listen later, why not!

My Aunt’s spouse, RIP, was exposed to agent orange and had sores on his hands and arms that continually bled and festered. I think that’s what the chorus line “a fire that doesn’t burn” is a reference to. I also think it may be a reference to the selling point of agent orange accomplishing what a fire would in destroying vegetation without having to have an actual fire. But now, after the fact, we realize that the US military should’ve gone through the trouble of burning vegetation instead of using agent orange.

The Vietnam War. A psychological craze that was out there. The patriots won and did not go crazy. The expropriators, the invaders, the mercenaries lost, and went mad. This is a world of materialism, disbelief, slow disintegration. Then and now... we have been able to experience the overthrow of the sacred hierarchy on which the functioning of the world rests. Here, too, the attitude of expropriation is apparent. The story is always about whether the human spirit or thinking is worthy or declining.
