Technically the railway is named after the mountain Culdee fell that it climbs similar to the skarloey being named after the lake it goes around rather than the engine of the same name.

I had a toy of one of these as a kid and everything surrounding this Railway was so mysterious to me as a kid. I never saw em in the show and wouldn't understand who they were until I explored the books. Neat stuff.

I can understand why fell means mountain, King Godred was son of a Danish king, It wouldn’t surprise me «fell», a Sudrian word, was adapted from the Norwegian word «fjell», meaning mountain. I know Norwegian isn’t Danish, but I have heard several English words are adapted from Norwegian.

Another thing worth mentioning, I discovered a few months ago that Ernest and Wilfred were replaced by Patrick, Alaric and Eric in 1963. Culdee and Shane Dooiney are still in service. What happened to Ernest and Wilfred after being replaced, I don’t know 🤷🏾‍♂️

See I always interpreted it as they need a face for going up and going down the mountain so that way they know if there’s something on the track. Say they go up, they look up through the front face. They go down they look through the down face.

I wonder if it was because it was too expensive why they didn’t do it, or if it was the case of the Arlsedale engines and they couldn’t make them because of the technology? It was a struggle already when they did the narrow gauge engines to film them and make their eyes work.
