The Ravenglass & Eskdale was originally 3ft gauge until 1915, when it was converted to 15" gauge. And when it was converted, some Bassett Lowke engines along with Heywood locos from the Duffield Bank Railway. One of these, the 0-8-0 tank Muriel, became River Irt, so Bert could have started life out very similarly

@6allmotivepowers3632 жыл бұрын
Very nice! I like your point of Sigrid being the original "another engine" - it makes so much more sense than the Railway waiting nearly 10 years to construct Jock. I believe I've come up with an explanation for the age error in Sticking Power - literally spur of the moment. At the time the story takes place, Bert had been heavily rebuilt just a couple years prior. The illustrations obviously never show that, so perhaps one could interpret the dialogue error as Mike and Rex joking about his recent rebuild - hence why they call him "younger".
@SamTheTrainFan2 жыл бұрын
I like the explanation! I’ve got a feeling that the whole thing with Rex and Mike calling him young was supposed to be a joke line, but it’s not really made clear enough in the story that I can be 100% sure that was Christopher’s intent.

- As someone quite observant, I can see convoluted material is pretty much what Mattel is struggling with right now in Thomas & Friends. I mean think about it: you've not only got an entire wealth of classic book material with lore containing loose ends, but also a television series that has had a turbulent direction, involving many setpieces and character implications, that do not always add up and often contradict with each other, especially as the series went on. Trying to make sense of all of it combined with a minimal understanding of how it all, is enough to initimidate anyone who happens to be in that position. We senior fans may know what they're missing out on, but the fact that they don't shouldn't really be undermined if you ask me. - As much as what I learn about the Arlesdale Railway via the Thomas & Friends Wiki and his video is fun, what really fascinates me is what we are not told. We are never told why Bert is said to be the youngest engine of the Arlesdale trio. Was there something to him that distinguished him from his Ravenglass counterpart that Awdry meant for but never clarified? Just where did he, Rex and Mike work before landing on Sodor exactly? Awdry seemed to be just as much a talent at hinting more than he lets on as he was with writing with a family audience in mind, and that is very much apparent in the lore behind his work. It's another detail of why his work is so fascinating; it's like a gateway that Awdry purposely left for our own creative vision. Regards, Samuel Farris.
@VestedUTuber2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's that Mattel can't wrap their heads around it, it's that Mattel doesn't want to invest the time, effort and money to do so. Mattel is a mass market toy company focused on selling a product first and foremost, they see the attached media as simply a marketing method to be done as cheaply as possible without hurting sales revenue, focusing only on the intended demographic for their products. And since the intended demographic for all the in-house produced merchandise is young children, that's what they're focusing on. The only merchandise that older demographics might typically be interested are the full hobby-grade model trains, and those aren't even made by Mattel - Bachmann, Lionel and Hornby produce those under license.

He also got incorrect the route of the MSR, as Ffarquhar Road came before Marthwaite, and the line went further east of Ulfstead Rd., originally terminating at Arlesdale Rd. before 1906 when the line was extended to King Orry’s Bridge closer to Peel Godred.

I wonder if that's why the writers of Season 2 of Thomas the Tank Engine got things mixed up with Toby the Tram Engine and Arlesdale - because they read a reference to the Arlesdale Tramway?

Amazing history video of the railway! One thing you didn't add in the ending was how Mattel disrespects the miniature engines. Mattel deems them and the Skarloey Railway unmarketable, pointless, and obscure. Which is why they don't appear anymore and their excuse is not much story potential as standard gauge engines. Still great video! I wish Frank and Jock appeared in the show though and maybe the Blisters and Sigrid

Finally! Someone else has the same grievances that I do about the continuity of Jock The New Engine! :-P I for one would personally fancy seeing some love and attention given to Sodor’s various people. Such as the Regaby Family, where the 6th Lord Regaby was the NWR’s 1st Chairman. Or about the Norramby family, where The Earl of Sodor gave his namesake to Duke. Actually its quite interesting too with what family tree history Awdry created. It's noted that Charles Laxey is related to Peter Dreswick, son of Nicholas Dreswick. Who in turn had a descendant married Sir Stephen Topham Hatt, that being Helen Margaret. And of course, Sir Stephen Topham Hatt’s grandfather married Jane Brown, daughter of Sir Handel Brown I. Sir Topham & Lady Jane Hatt had a daughter named Barbra, which married Lord Albert Regaby. Basically, everyone is inbred. You can thank me later for this sheer volume of information you probably didn’t want to know. Anyhow, I thought the video was pretty good. Though, when mentioning the Arlesdale Railway’s stations, you forgot to mention Ballamoddey and King Orry’s Bridge. I definitely enjoyed how everything was formatted. But I think personally you could’ve talked more about Arlesburgh Harbour & its Castle. How the ballasting processing plant is at Killdane. Finer details like that. That being said you don’t want the video to be too long. Oh yes, and Coronation Scot was a good music choice. Alright, I’ll shut up now. I look forward to seeing more videos from you! :-)

So, one thing that kinda bothers me with the Arlesdale Railway... passenger service would honestly be a bit questionable on such a small gauge. I know that on 7.5" gauge you actually have to actively balance the cars while riding. It wouldn't be as big of a problem on 15" gauge but I could still see a lot of problems being caused by lopsided weight loads on the passenger cars.
@hadrenrailway99712 жыл бұрын
I mean, the Ravenglass & Eskdale (upon which the Arlesdale is based) and Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch railways both run passenger services without any weight balance problems, so I fail to see why the Arlesdale would.

I never realized until after watching the video for the first time, there were clunky continuity errors. How can you screw up continuity within the Railway Series timeline? Simple! Placing only one story to take place during 1975, with the last two taking place in 1976. What a complete fuck up that was, even on Christopher Awdry's part.
