I figured out train signalling long ago but was watching this and a few other train basics to see what others had to say about how to do signals after getting into a rather "animated conversation" with a couple of people who insisted I was doing it wrong. Your video matches almost exactly the "rules" and methods I came up with, as have most others. But you actually answered a question I always wondered but have never seen anyone comment on -- how do you tell, or force, which track those inside-corner positions actually connect to ? I've just avoided those positions. I never realized that you could rotate the signal to connect it to the desired track. THANKS !

Around 10:20 the T-intersection is signaled unoptimally. Junction ends right after last rail overlap, not after the last merge. That means there should be at least 2 rail signals out of intersection if it ends with a merge of 2 rails. If you do it the way video shows then it causes trains to just wait longer for their turn to move because signal chains are longer. Rail merges almost never need to be chain signaled in general. Of course it still means that after the last rail signal there always should be enough space for whole train, that is measured from the furthest out rail signal in case of merge.
@SoellessGaming4 жыл бұрын
That's where I disagree; I've seen too many instances where rail signals being used causes trains to block the junction. It may take longer for trains to pass, but they shouldn't be blocking the junctions with this setup. Thanks for your comment and debate!
@seonteeaika4 жыл бұрын
@@SoellessGaming They don't block junctions with way i described, one just has to make sure that next signal after rail signal is always far enough so that train can fully pass that rail signal. If anything, this way you get even less deadlocks especially with long trains. It also means that one should never make a turn right after an intersection! That goes much against all conventions. If you must, then chain signal all the way to the next clear section.
@horaz86nope246 жыл бұрын
Awsome in deapth tutorial :D As an experienced player, I know that it is often useful to design your train network in such a way that not all trains are forced to take the same routes, and offer alternative ones. To prevent all trains from getting stuck in a single bottle-neck. And if needed use a smart train stacker to prevent waiting trains to block traisn that would otherwise just pass by. I would love to see your way of solving those issues Thanks for th great content

Nice tutorial! While I'm fairly experienced, I'm glad I watched anyway, for various reasons, including that I think this is the first time I've seen a good demonstration of signal rotation! Lots of other good information here, too. Good work! And while I'm sure you also have your own, you seemed to be soliciting ideas for potential topics for future videos, if you decide to do follow ups for more advanced topics, so... here are a few. Feel free to reach out to me if any of these need more explanation, or you'd like to collaborate somehow. Anyway, thoughts (some just beyond where you took things with this video, others much more advanced... alas, not in any particular order with regard to that): 1. Maybe talk more about the details of when a signal will blink (cycling colors)? Like, a more detailed analysis of the specific conditions that cause it. 2. Stacking systems, potentially including regular stackers, station bypass lanes, linear stacking, etc. 3. Station naming (and renaming), patterns and pitfalls. 4. Repathing when stations are left unavailable (and another station shares the same name). 5. Controlling stations and/or signals via the circuit network. 6. Automatic fuel, trash, and/or logistics trains. 7. Including circuit network wiring on electric poles in blueprints. 8. "Grid system" blueprints. 9. Loading and unloading, including keeping things balanced. I could probably think of more, and yet this is also probably quite more than enough to be a lot of work to incorporate all of! So, take what you want, and leave anything you don't want... for another day, or for never. :)

A modern, highly focused signaling video. Fantastic. On a side note, is there any reason you go out of your way to bisect the block with a chain signal apposing to placing it right before the junction in rule 2? -formatting-
@SoellessGaming6 жыл бұрын
Good question! The block is too short for a train to fit there whether the signal is put directly before the next junction or not, so in that case it doesn't really matter where exactly the signal goes as long as it's placed somewhere. It's important to put the chain signal as close to the beginning of the junction when starting off the intersection in particular (rule 2) to ensure there's enough room behind that signal to allow for the max sized train to still fit. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for the thoughtful comment!

In the future, could you explain how to use the circuit network for different operations on both small scale and large scale? Examples being: Small scale- creating a switch - allowing or not allowing flow of certain items - Large scale- control of resources across the map - when to make or stop making more robots I am not really sure about any of these things as I have a great deal of trouble using and understanding how to use the combinators, red and green wires and what I can accomplish with them. Sometimes I watch people here and I think why even use this system when you can just limit the damn chest? Anyway, I think this could be helpful

So I usually put a lot of chain signals down and try to keep the individual blocks at splits and crossings as small as possible so that trains - who are traveling through - occupy that block for less time thus reducing the chance that another train has to break or slow down (or even stop completely). Therefore I usually put chain signals/normal signals _right before and after_ each split or crossing. Any thoughts on that?

I see why you do that but if that block you've created by having a chain signal and a rail signal in that little block will mean you can have a large train stopped at the chain signal blocking the intersection and jamming the entire thing - I've been guilty of this many times. That's why rule one is so important - if the max sized train can't fit there, then use (only) a chain signal.

@@SoellessGaming Yeah, no, I always use chain signals exclusively inside the intersection. I also learned that the hard way. So I guess on that aspect i am on the right _track_ ;) I might not have phrased my last sentence well enough. I just wrote "chain signals/normal signals", because one normal signal is placed after exiting the intersection, where there usually is a merge. So I guess I should have wrote "split, crossing and merge" to be 100% complete in my statement or shouldnt have mentioned the normal signal at all to avoid confusion :D But while we are at the topic of the first rule: I feel like that rule only applies to the one block right after each intersection. Everywhere else along straight tracks the spacing does not necessarily matter. Because as long as trains stop in front of the intersection and there is enough space after the intersection for the longest train on your tracks, there should never be any issues with jammed trains. Even if your longest train would stick out into that block after the intersection, then that block would be blocked and no other train trying to drive into that block would enter the intersection.

Nice vid! I made this system, but between intersections is a unique color track. When a train arrives to intersection "A" it waits until the train ahead leaves the track between "A" and "B", by crossing intersection "B". How can i fix this? (I hope my English is understood and that I've explained myself well)

Hi! I'm not quite following what you're saying, do you have a screenshot or picture you can link?

I have never been able to figure out train signals. I got good enough with the rail signals to allow trains to cross paths but I never truly understood what I was doing with the chain signals. I always just moved them until they stopped crashing. Thanks

wow, I was complicating it too much by having one track and being left and right handed at the same time. No wonder I got deadlocks from time to time.

That will do it! Glad you were able to get it figured out.

That should be easy enough to fix up, as long as you use chain signals, but can cause delays. Basically all signals along a 2-way track should be chain signals. Then the signal to exit the 2 way bit is a normal signal. It is also helpful to add sections which have 2 rails (one for each direction) so that trains can pass, but make sure it is signalled properly and large enough to fit the largest train.
