I'm 18 and I started skating two months ago, and I passed my basic 1 test last week. Skating is a dream come true! The speed feels amazing, and mastering new moves (even if they're small ones!) are accomplishments I'm incredibly proud of. I've wanted to do it for so long, but either my parents wouldn't allow me to, or external factors made it simply impossible. I only wish I could've started sooner. Watching championships and olympics and seeing all those graceful choregraphies is what truly made me want to skate. At my age, I know it's difficult to start, and I have to admit that practicing with 7-year-olds who are already better than you can be a bit discouraging. However, with age comes self-control and discipline, and that is what makes me progress faster. Anyone can do it! It's only a matter of will. If you fail, learn from your failures. Don't be afraid to start. You won't regret it.

As of now, I'm only imagining ever being good at the sport. But I love watching videos or watching skaters in real life. In my current situation, I only go skating about once a year, and I just had my chance. I don't dare to ask if I can take lessons and I also can't really practice on my own. At the same time it feels scary to wait because then I might lose the chance of ever being good at it
@reallifefairy2 жыл бұрын
@@fienevandijk7224 I don't know anything about your situation, but I understand that it can be difficult to go outside your comfort zone and ask for the things that you want. May I ask what is holding you back? Is it the fear of not succeeding? Not wanting to put a financial strain on your family? If so, I can relate to both. I would always watch these beautiful routines online, or even catch a glimpse of these young and graceful skaters who are leagues above me when they were in a training session... And I felt terrible about myself. "It's too late to start, I'll never get to their level!" It took me a long time to get over my fear of failure and the "barrier" of my age, but eventually I understood that it is important to take action and control of your own life, and do the things that you dearly want to. You mentioned being afraid of never being good at skating if you don't take the chance you currently have. In my opinion, you don't have to be good at something to enjoy it. Even if you're bad at skating, as long as you take pleasure in it and appreciate the sensations it brings you, it will be amazing and bring you a sense of accomplishment. If the issue is a financial one, I can't really give you advice about it. My parents are lower middle-class, and I only have one sister, which meant that they had some money to pay the subscription for a basic activity (like dance or basketball). My sister and I both took modern-jazz dance classes when we were kids, but we eventually dropped them and never did anything else. We saved some money thanks to this, and after years of not doing any activity, I mustered up the courage to ask for what I wanted. My parents were really happy that I had found something I would enjoy, but they visibly cringed at the price. Thankfully, in my country, the state offered a 50€ discount for 18 year-olds who subscribed to a sports membership, and the club I chose also had a discount for new members. In the end, I paid like 380€ instead of 470€, so that was a huge relief! I won't be able to use the same tricks next year, but I'll get a job in the summer to earn some money and help my parents pay for it. I suggest you look up possible discounts you can get, and maybe get a job if you can (even if it's a small one, like babysitting or somehting!), but besides that there isn't much you can do... Then again, I don't know your age, so maybe you're a financially stable adult. Practicing on your own isn't something I would recommend. If you do, your progress will be slow and frustrating, and there's a chance you'll have bad habits when skating. If you do end up doing that, maybe you could book a session or two with a coach who can correct your mistakes and give you a few tips for your own safety and progression. Personally, I wish I could get private coaching instead of group classes, because the rink can get a bit crowded at times, but on the bright side my rinkmates and I can relate to each other! I hope you'll figure out what you want to do. As long as you're happy, that's all that matters. Sorry for the way too long comment, I got a bit passionate here! Anyway, have a nice day/night, wish you the best!
@fienevandijk72242 жыл бұрын
@@reallifefairy Just to clarify, I am very much not a financially stable adult. I'm 15 and I live with a family who I'm sure can afford lessons. The barrier, as you described it, is a mental kind. You see, I already partake in quite a lot of extracurricular activities so in order to start figure skating I'd have to stop doing one of them. Though that in itself is not at all a problem, the problem arises from the thought I'd have to tell my parents that. Thank you for being the message I woke up to. I realise that I'm in a situation that's so much easier than what a lot of people are in. I still hope to get some practice in myself, to be a 100% assured, and then I'll try to slowly creep in the idea with my parents. Thanks again and keep skating!
@reallifefairy2 жыл бұрын
@@fienevandijk7224 Oh, I see! I'm glad you're not in financial troubles. And I understand why you don't want to abandon one activity for another, that's not exactly the ideal outcome. Hopefully your parents will agree to let you figure skate! I hope your self-practice will go well. There are some KZbin videos that give tips, and there are probably some social media accounts dedicated to giving advice to beginner skaters. Wish you the best, and keep skating, too!

Try going backwards while holding the wall. Also really build up your core muscles so you have better balance and can handle more speed. Another thing, try to master the movements you're learning before trying more advanced ones, you will feel more comfortable and confident then.

Just a tip for people trying to learn a one foot glide; before you try skating forwards with a one foot glide, practise just balancing on one foot by the wall, when I was learning I'd try to stay on each foot for 3 seconds before swapping. Once you have that, try doing a one foot glide forwards by the wall, holding it for the same amount of time (3 seconds). I've found it's actually easier to balance on one foot when you are gliding forwards somewhat quickly; even now I can glide on one foot for a much longer time than I can balance on one foot by the wall, so don't worry if you can't balance on one foot for long, just keep practising and I promise you'll get there someday. :)

Same as Secret User. Did figure skating at a reputable school back in my home country around 15 years ago. Sustained an injury, had to lay low for just over 6 months and then.. Just never really got back into it. Not sure why, honestly. Fast forward to now... Depression had me beat for over 11 years and I've decided to take up all my hobbies from when I was a kid :D Watching Yuri on Ice reminded me of something I lost within me. I really truly thought I had nothing I enjoyed or anything I'd ever look forward to. Also low key acknowledged some things about my sexuality, god this anime is GODTIER Also re-watched Forest of the Piano and Your Lie in April. They originally seemed mediocre when I watched them like 3 years ago , but that's what depression really does. It just takes it all out of you sadly. Wanting to learn Yuri on Ice soundtrack (as well as many other pieces I used to love) has also taken me back to that :) I'm exploring so many hobbies now, and I'm so glad that I watched this

But i do cardio very rarely because it makes me feel too much tired ahah. I still have August to do better, I will try to integrate to the exercises as much as possible a bit of cardio! Thank you so much!🍀 (sorry for the bad english)

Hello! I am currently learning ice-skating, (I'm 15) I feel like I have the confidence to do some of the jumps but I am a little nervous to try skating backwards- I have a friend that has been ice-skating since 2019 but since covid, he hasn't been able to progress much but it's still so impressive to me of what he can do- I'm just nervous of falling haha- you might not see this but, how did you manage to overcome nervousness? :')
@Sofabar3 жыл бұрын
Make sure to learn all ways to go backwards first before you start jumping and you can start be holding the wall first when you go backwards, then slowly weaning yourself off of the wall, until you feel comfy to do it alone. Practice it everyday and eventually you'll feel better about it! ❤️
@사이다-v5l3 жыл бұрын
Going backwards goes before doing jumps (all jumps start from backwards except the axel). You should start with backwards swizzles, move onto backwards pumps, then stroking, etc.

I am a a skater as well, just remember just one trick won’t be right until u understand what you are doing wrong. Have fun on the ice⛸❤️

I've learned a lot of these moves like the one foot glide, the marching, the swizzles (the backward swizzles took me forever to learn.) and the marches. The biggest issue that I have now is the snow plow stop. Every time I try to do it I end up falling and landing my hips in a w position. Which is actually very scary for me because I've just recovered from hip surgery last summer. So my question is how do I do the snow plow stop safely?
@Sofabar7 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Try doing it on the wall or have your friend/trainer hold you, you should gain more balance and confidence this way. Once you feel good about it, give a few without help a try. Also to have good balance, you have to have a good core, so it wouldn't hurt to try a few core workouts :)
@kkstar12977 жыл бұрын
SofaBar I do physical therapy every day to help out my legs and my core get a little stronger. My left leg is still a little weak from the surgery. But I'm willing to do my therapy for as long as it takes so I can get stronger on the ice. Thank you so much for your help. I deeply appreciate it.

I’m really excited! if I like it enough, maybe I’ll take lessons one day.

Do you know any good skates for beginners? I'm starting lessons in September and want some for my birthday (August) but I don't have a clue what to buy.
@Sofabar7 жыл бұрын
Well I'm not sure which is the best for beginners, but every boot brand has beginner boots. I started out on used SP Teri boots and then switched to Graf Richmonds, and then when I started doing more doubles I switched to Graf Edmintons and have stayed with that type of skate since. But I hear the Edeas are really comfortable, so maybe it's worth taking a look at. Usually the websites of the boots will say for which level skates are for. Hope that helped a bit! :)

May I ask for advice? My mom gave me her old skates from about 1970s or so and they are SUPER wobbly around the ankles. Tehy are stable down but not up. Is that normal? Like when I just walk my ankle can roll left and right. Is that the way it should be?
@vchi06267 жыл бұрын
They're probably tied a little loose. Try asking someone to help you pull them a little tighter?
@cydweeb37217 жыл бұрын
Gymnastics Paradise no its not normal. They don't have enough ankle support. Dont skate in them
@jasonmartin13267 жыл бұрын
Gymnastics Paradise No it's not I would say 1. Try tieing tighter Or 2. Get new skates You can easily break your ankle if it's wobbly or doesn't fit

Like what everyone else said, if you can't tie them tighter, then it's best to get new skates. Not worth spraining your ankle over.

I have stepped on the ice today for the first time , and when I tell you I’ve never liked anything more I’m dead serious Unfortunately I can’t take lessons and go there often , I think I’ll be able to go 2-4 times a month but sessions are 2:30h long so I have plenty of time to do something I am pretty impressed by the fact that I fell just once but I think I won’t be able to go with rental skates for long My size is too small and the one right after is too big so I preferred going with the one that’s a bit smaller for stability at least I expected it to be easier tbh lol but I managed to skate around without holding onto anything after the first hour so I feel pretty proud of that Why is stopping so hard lmfao ? Anyways I really hope to continue this I’ve never felt more interested and free doing something , I can’t believe how quickly 2:30h passed and how much I already wanted to be on the rink the second I got off Already counting the days to the next session

Sure! Try to make sure your body, arms and leg are going straight out of the circle when you jump into the air, so you're not going into the circle right away, don't worry the force will bring you back into the circle. Also make sure you have a good outside edge before and that when you step forward your arms are going back and will then shoot forward as I said above. Making sure your arms are not coming in from the side or wherever. Always back and then forwards.
