A very small old growth fir that has about 5' of head lean to the right. I am using a "soft" Dutchmen to swing it around 180 degrees to the left without wedging it. The term soft is used because of the additional saw cuts in the undercut on the left side. They are cut in pretty much parallel to the the top of the face cut. Each successive cut is sawed in about 2" less than the previous one. This allows the tree to to set down on the stump wood more gently and helps to prevent the holding wood from breaking prematurely.
I am currently available for port work.

I'm not sure what I am more impressed by, your tree swinging skills or the quality of your videos. Best thing is the lack of bravado which pollutes most of what I see. Your just a man doing his job, (extremely well), and showing us as you do it. Whichever it is, I want more of it so count me as a new subscriber. Thank you and Cheers !

August, I have seen videos of some of your work and you are no slob yourself. A compliment from one of your caliber is a compliment indeed. I am no professional, not by a long shot but there are some folks on KZbin who have taught me a tremendous amount about felling. Nutsy, yourself, and a few others not only instruct but rather, I dare say, save lives, limbs and property through your instructions. It is truly a joy to watch you guys work and then apply it to a tree and have it work the same. Thanks to you all for teaching!

Thanks for the complement, but I am just an average "Joe" timberfaller with a few tricks up my sleave (well not any more)... The reason I can "get" away with some of the things is I have probably tried it or something similar. Maybe even WRECKED a tree in the process of the maneuver. The benefit is you generally know what will and will NOT work in advance. The caveots are endless, can you get the timing right, enough weight on the butt to do what's needed, the top in the right spot etc., etc.

Thanks for that, I get tired of watching cutters on KZbin beating everything over with wedges (grin). Dutchman on a doug fir is going to work fine due to the strong fibers, other species not so much, but doable most of the time. I recommend keeping your back cut at least two inches above your face cut and starting it on the far side getting under the lean, making sure the cuts cross and walking it back around to the high side. Watch the top when you're putting the face cut in and get well under the lean, then just gun it for the lay... Thanks again for the vid, takes me back...

He did not make a Shit backcut like that because he is TIMBER falling genius and did not want to cut the butt end again. You only do the high backcut if you are worried about your escape direction and butt potentially kicking back. Dear moron, the LEAN was OPPOSITE face cut...

John hi. Your method of leveraging the tree off the gun with a Dutchman is a different maneuver. The swing, or swing cut, might be the easiest way to lose a tree over backward. The wood on the downhill side gets cut completely off from the front of the face.Then the tree is finessed around via sawing the side opposite holding wood up from the top, rear corner. The sizwell is not a swing. Although, they work well in conjunction with a swing. A sizwell is relief cuts in front of the hinge on the opposite side that a swing cut takes place. Generally on tte up hill side of the tree. This channel shows the sizwell in a few videos. Thanks for watching.

Hdhsbs Bxhxhshzn hi. Technically speaking this is how to swing a tree ~ 180º without wedging by using a Dutchmen (the pie shaped piece left in on the far side). I did posted a video years ago with a double hinge from this same strip. Thanks for watching.
@neild7971
@neild7971 5 жыл бұрын
@Hdhsbs Bxhxhshzn As I understand it the triple hinge is created by vertical bore cuts within a thick hinge allowing the sections of hinge to move against each other and prolong the hold when side weight is an issue. This cut is a series of relief cuts in front and bellow the hinge. Softening the breaking forces in one side of the hinge once the undercut has reached closing, and so swinging the tree. I think this is correct, and helps. I have felled many trees and not needed these techniques, but good to know should the need arise!

Ryans Logging hi. I cut most of my volume with Husqvarna chainsaws in all actuality. Assuming you reference the 7900 (orange) Makita. Ahead of their time in many aspects. They were designed ~ 15 years ago. Don't weigh anymore then a 500i. Finesse cutter type mo-chine lest you break mounts. Coil cuts in to low so that's an upgrade. Upper spring mount system needs an adjust. Oiler needs a mod to oil well for a long period of time. The SLR system in the exhaust has to go so that takes extra time. Expensive to get up to speed. There are multiple videos going back ~ 10 years on this channel with various 7900 Dolmar/Makita saws. One from last fall shows a beast. Just as long as the wife doesn't do an in promtu man cave inspection we're all good, LOL! Thanks for watching.

@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 3 жыл бұрын
S & S hi. Ummm, I am not sure about that. There was only a single pivot point in the stump and it was only about ½ the diameter. There were no longitudinal relief cuts behind the main hinge which allow the holding wood to move forward, more so than the far side, before breaking. I cut off the far side holding wood in during the process of leveraging a back leaning tree forward, against it's will, without wedging, jacking or pulling. This is actually a swing. With a soft Dutchman thrown in so the tree did not come around to far. The Faller's Corner - HARD Side Leaning Tree, Sizwell AND A Triple Hinge, With A Mid-Distance Push video shows what a triple hinge looks like. Along with a sizwell. The video - Hard Side Leaner posted 10/12 years ago shows a variation of a double hinge. I think that there other videos in the collection that show multiple hinge scenarios also. Thanks for watching.

What’s the difference between this and a sizwheel cut?
@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 3 жыл бұрын
Kevin hi. They are happening on the opposite side of the tree. So everything is different. This is, technically speaking, a swing. The tree leaned the opposite direction from the way it fell. No wedging, jacking, or pushing was utilized to get it to go the opposite direction from the lean. Nutshell - A Sizwell, or Sizwheel however it is referred, removes wood from the stump on the front side of the hinge. This allows the holding wood on the sizwell side to move forward and hold on longer than the hinge wood on the far side. The "World's Ugliest Stump" video on this channel from 10/12 years ago shows a Sizwell. There are a few more recent videos also. Thanks for watching.

F L M hi. This is about at the top for expertise required. It's the easiest way to lose a tree over backward that I know of. Better be prepared to also lose a saw if/when attempting this maneuver. Simple answer, cut the bottom of the hinge completely off - which gets the tree to settle down a bit. Saw the top near side holding wood until the tree sits on the stump. Feather it around, BUT,,,, absolutely do not cut the upper part of the hinge wood off. Having the face out is a given... If your thinking it looks easy and/or simple, not so. Knowing your wood is imperative. Know how to feather it is paramount. Thanks for watching.

@@hotsaws101 Thanks for that, it's very helpful. I'm definitely not going to be trying that on a leaner over a house for the first time. Lol! I appreciate the info. I spent 5 years working solo in the woods slowly learning how to swing a tree but you sir make it look easy. My only concern with this cut is that you're obviously close to the cut up to the moment of the fall. Seeing how she kicks off the face is it fair to say that the soft Dutchman is relatively risky?
@hotsaws101

Mike hi. Sorry for the delayed response. It is the easiest way to lose a tree over backward. It is one of the easiest ways to lose a tree sideways. One of the easier ways to lose a saw when they are small like this tree. In the end, better be prepared to fix fence, clean creek, or buy a new saw/parts. Thanks for watching.

When you place your axe in the back, is this to prevent the tree from sitting back on the saw or to give it the initial lateral swing and momentum as you sort of undermine it, or both? I can't be anymore impressed by this and also don't fully understand it. I keep coming back to this because it's easily the most complicated cut I've ever witnessed but you make it look simple.
@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 2 жыл бұрын
RavenShield78 hi. I'm watching for movement, either fore or aft, of the bole. I don't think that an axe will stop a tree from setting back. But, I've never tried either. This maneuver is the single easiest way to lose a tree over backward that I know of. Many a faller has had to clean out the creek, fix a fence, replace a roof while attempting to use this method. IF a guy was to try it, better be fully prepared to replace your saw. Fallers have smashed more saws than the three previous mentioned scenarios combined. Thanks for watching.

Jack, hope all is well with you and yours. Got a question for you, because its been a matter of debate on the tree forums. Some are saying that it's impossible to swing a tree a full 180 degrees with only a saw. Its really difficult to show the lean of a tree on video (just think how much it takes to do it in person). So just to be 100 percent clear. You are able to swing a tree a full 180. degrees. And if so would you care to share some of the parameters of the task, species, size, lean, etc. thanks in advance. And thanks for sharing so much great info for so many years. Personally, if you said it I believe it, whether or not it's clear from the video. Also, has this ability to turn a tree 180 degrees been known and practiced by other experienced fallers? thanks in advance. Daniel

Daniel hi. We are. Hope the same for you. I think that it is possible/doable. I use it when the conditions are right. I think that those who know, know. Sometimes they will come around more than that and hit to high also. Knowing what your up against - the lean of the tree is part of this. Knowing your wood - since not all trees are a candidate. Understanding the wood in the bole at base is paramount. Size doesn't really come into play. Contour/shape of the bole as it heads up. Height can be a consideration at times. Your asking for a nutshell overview on a maneuver that I've used since I started felling timber. The nuance factor is off the charts. It would take a dissertation. It's been around for years. More than 40 that I know of. I've been using it since in the early '80s. To answer your question, yes a boatload of fallers know of and have used this method of swinging a tree. Just like the sizwell or double & triple hinge techniques. They have been around for at least 20 years. I posted a video from this same strip using a variation of the double hinge. For dating purposes, we cut this unit in '08 when the economy was struggling. A point of caution - a guy better be prepared to lose the tree over backwards when attempting this operation. Also, you better be able to afford a new saw and/or bar. Many have been smashed over the years when attempting it. Thanks for watching.

Right. It’s like “I make a wedge cut and some angled slash cuts on the side of the tree that in tension (away from the lean) near the wedge, then I do a back cut on the side in compression (lean side), and tree then falls away from the side it’s leaning towards.....as you can see.” No! We can’t see!

Could you make a video like this on a tree that's not in a bad spot so you can slow down and explain the it . Kind of like a how to.

Matthew hi. This operation here is one of the easiest to "get it wrong" that I know of. The chances of loosing the tree over backward is very great. The chance of the tree sitting down on your bar and walking the saw around to the front and flattening it is good. At ~ 3:30 this tree set on my bar - tight. This maneuver is explained pretty good, both in the description and in the video. If it is not making since to you then I might suggest not being around anything of value and being prepared to buy a new saw if attempted. Thanks for watching.
