On another KZbin show the problem was not calcium but a Vitamin D deficiency.

I have one bird that has layed soft eggs occasionally since the day I got her. she gives me eggs that look like they are water stained as well. aka a white ring round it with a lighter center. She is a Rhode Island Red, and my chickens are free range. Great information.

you are fast at responding. your video has been the best one i have seen in this matter. I have one girl that is laying soft eggs and we have all of those goodies. They also get bok choy it is full of calcium. I thought she was egg bound but what you are saying makes more sense. thank you i want to see your run, when its done. I am adding on to mine this spring.

Question: I have three birds all rescues two hens and a rooster. I've recently been feeding them Purina flock raiser which I have read is suitable when you are feeding both hens and roosters. However, one hen is no longer lying eggs at all, and my other has just begun producing soft shelled eggs. I am aware of what their calcium needs are but I am wondering if I'm making a mistake by using the Flock Raiser, inside of the 16 layer feed. I would be interested in any thoughts you might have about this.

Hi! I’ve never had laying hens and a rooster at the same time… it may sound terrible but you can’t have multiple feeds (because everyone will just eat whatever, not “rooster only” and “hens only”), so I say prioritize the hens’ needs and get a layer feed. I’m here if you have questions on their calcium too but sounds like you know what to do! One more thing - if you’re in the heat of summer, remember that hens may slow down or stop laying to conserve energy. ✌🏼❤️🐓

@@realsimplemama thank you so much for reply RSM. Yes cannot have multiple feeds that is precisely the problem that is why I have this feed from Purina that theoretically you can give to everybody...but who knows... I'm also aware that there are reasons why birds stop laying eggs . in my situation because my birds are rescues I have no idea how old they are they may simply be past their laying life.. Yes I'm pretty well versed on the calcium issue and I think I'm just going to do what you have done and leave them a separate bowl with most likely for them to pick on whenever they feel they need it. I love your channel. Feel very confident in the advice that you offer. We are alike in philosophy....but I got me no experience 😂😂😂

@@cjboac9864 thank you so much for this comment! Jeez. I just bought more flock raiser guess I'm returning it! Here's a question for you do you have any suggestion on any kind of an all flock feed? Maybe just a five-grain scratch....and supplementing girls with the oyster shell as I have been.

Yesterday I was putting everyone to bed, and I got all in but one, the Boss was out and laying an egg (standing up), well it was soft. I really didn't think much of it was the first one. Today the Boss layed a regular egg (I think she did we had to go out all day, and I have 6 chickens and there was 6 eggs). But when it came time to put everyone away for the night, only one was in bed at the time. The Boss layed another soft egg and the other girls where on it so fast including the Boss, I didn't have a chance to grab it. Everybody else is fine. They do have oyster shells out all the time. I'll have to try the eggshells, but I hear that will make them want to eat their eggs.
@realsimplemama
@realsimplemama Жыл бұрын
Hey - you can do a few things. Since you know it’s The Boss you can isolate her and give her plenty of extra protein and clean water. Crushed up eggshells in my opinion are always a good idea and you make them fine enough, chickens won’t start eating eggs because they don’t make that connection. ✌🏻❤️🐓

One of my chooks laid their usual perfect egg, then later in the day laid one soft shelled egg in the middle of the lawn. Next morning she didn't lay an egg. The next day she laid another soft shell egg, but this one was in her nesting box where she always usually lays perfect eggs. My 3 chooks have been laying since 16 to 17 weeks old, every day except for 2 days where one didn't lay. They are almost 6 months old, any ideas from someone would be appreciated
@realsimplemama
@realsimplemama 4 жыл бұрын
Oh man I’m sorry. If it’s not happening consistently I wouldn’t worry. But it never hurts to be supplementing with calcium - oyster shell, give the girls their own egg shells back, etc. Also make sure that their layer food has calcium in it. Keep the supplements separate from the food so the girls can grab it as they need.

Hi there, My chicken is been laying shell less egg for the last one month I have been given her lots and lots of oyster shell , Do you think one day it will come back to normal as she looks very healthy eats and drinks normal, I want to know if I should have hope that one day it will come back to normal, The chicken is about 8 months old was laying normal eggs for about two weeks then just this happened
@realsimplemama
@realsimplemama 4 жыл бұрын
Oh no. I’m so glad she’s acting healthy but if it’s happening consistently (every single time) it may be a permanent thing. I’d make sure she has plain water, she’s getting layer feed (not chick feed or grower feed) and give her your own chickens’ egg shells crushed, mixed with Greek yogurt or some plain oatmeal.

@@realsimplemama I have the same issue. My vet put an implant in her to stop her laying but after three months the soft eggs were produced again. How much egg shell would you give her per day? I was going to get another implant in but I would like to see if I can correct it with egg shell instead. Note: it got so bad that she was laying internally. She had trouble breathing and her abdomen was swallen with fluid and her liver was in bad shape.

I’m a new chicken owner, one of my hens just started laying 4 days ago. She missed one day, but laid an egg the next morning (this morning). Then only 10 hours later when she was about to go to the coop for the night she squatted and out pops a soft shell egg with a little cord attached. I thought that was weird. Now after watching your vid I realize soft shell eggs just happens sometimes, but my concern is it was only 10 hours after her morning egg. Could it be because she missed one day? Should I be concerned? They eat layer feed and I leave crushed calcium out separate, but never see them eat it.
@realsimplemama
@realsimplemama 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I wouldn’t worry yet. New layers often have little kinks that need to be worked out of the system. If she’s acting normal like eating and drinking and preening, her color looks good, I bet she’s ok. But I’m glad you saw her do that so now you can be on the lookout - if it keeps happening for more than two more weeks I’d start to look at what to do to intervene and help her. I happen to love The Chicken Chick because she does a ton of research and her whole demeanor is beautiful and real. (Plus her homestead is gorgeous!) She does have some brand affiliations so that can get annoying. Other than that I just use my San Antonio chicken expert buddies, or looking online. I hadn’t seen anything about what you mentioned, but I only have had a batch of chicks one time. Did something happen? Can I help?
