Never worked in the food service but I have worked retail. I absolutely hated it when managers would tell me this. However I hated it even more when older customers would expect it. I'm not here to be your friend. I'm here to be professional and to check out your items as efficiently as possible so the line doesn't go all the way back to the baby isle

I have to think that there are people in that (imaginary) place that sit down, get a good drink and ? pick one of the specials, enjoy it without any changes, and you know... enjoy the show! It might be a treat if you weren't fighting the system, or exhibiting personality disorders. I like restaurants, but have had a really low-budget life, "bistro" for example or a real bar is not something I see very much! In these sketches it has come up a few times that the people there actually like the food, you might do really well if you actually listened to the servers and didn't have big imaginary dietary restrictions. I go out of my way to let people know if I thought something was exceptional, and they often seem surprised! Now that I've watched dozens of these shorts I'm starting to see why. I sometimes end up meeting the cook. Maybe they're doing a good job and still getting grief all day from crazy people?

I legit wish I had a manager like Terry. I'm a year and a half into my serving career and I don't feel like I have any guidance or direction. I know I want to move up past some corporate chain, but I'm stuck there right now. I'm a decent server where I'm at, but in the grand scheme I feel like I barely get by with the skills I have. I'm just hoping to improve as much as I can over time

I was a server for years and most of the people I worked with were mediocre at best. It's a job almost anyone can do but very few can master. To do it well you need to be organized, an expert multitasker, a talented salesperson with exceptional people skills, patient, and good at conflict resolution. Then do it consistently in a very stressful, fast paced environment. But if you can pull it off and get a job where business is booming, you can make a LOT of money. Especially nowadays since good service has become so rare. I can offer you a couple of solid tips. 1: PREBUS! If at all possible there should be nothing left on the table besides glasses after you drop off the check. 2: Use downtime to your advantage. Refill the ice bins. Make tea/coffee. Restock clean glasses, silverware, etc. Good luck!
