The problem is typically that the tanning solution is not permeating the hide entirely, because like you said, it's too thick. Of course, you risk thinning it too much and the hair slipping or putting holes in the hide as well. Second, the break is often not thorough enough. You need a really good abrasive implement like a post or a concrete corner to work that hide against as its drying and even after.

Yes I just did a video on soft tanning a coyote again. I am going to touch on a few things I thought about I left out in the last one's. And yes to thick it doesn't get through but I did mention in another video that sometimes you need to oil twice.

This video is great!! Just got a possum and will probably try to tan it like i usually do, but my first pelt was a ground squirrel, super hard. Second was a raccoon, still hard but not as crispy you could say, hoping thay with how much i took off the skin it tans smoother, didnt take so much off as to make the fur come out, but left a really thin layer

I have a deer hide I salted but never got a chance to finish the process. It's been sitting HARD since February. Suggestions on the next step/solutions to getting it soft again? Is it too late??? We have tags for this coming season and I can use the brain to do the new hide and hoping I can use the same brain brine solutions to finish the old one from February. If that's possible.
@carolinabushwacker
@carolinabushwacker Ай бұрын
You would have to soak it in a salt bath to rehydrate it and go from there. But to get it soft you will have to shave it on a fleshing machine. I will be doing a deer cape video here in a few months when deer season opens. Wait and follow then. I will explain in detail

Yes and I do it in the otter soft tanning video. It works but leaves a little mess which is ok. But I have a fleshing machine and really don't do it much. If you don't have a machine it is fine to clean the meat off but it won't thin the skin.

Let's say that I came across a piece of tanned hide(whitetail) from someone who tanned it "hard." Are there any techniques that you would suggest for correcting the problem after the fact to soften up the end result?
@carolinabushwacker
@carolinabushwacker Ай бұрын
It is hard to say. If it is thick skin {not been shaved and thinned} then that will make it to hard to redo. And if not oiled and stretched/braked the first time it will make it hard to redo. Deer season get you a fresh cape and go from there. Much easier to do a fresh cape then try to soften it. Just being straight with you.
