Soft Top & Frame Removal - Mazda MX5 Miata Soft Top Replacement Pt. 1

Hey Folks! In this video we are starting a new video series around replacing the convertible top on our 2003 Mazda MX5 Miata.
In part 1 of this series, we'll be removing the soft top and the top frame from the Miata body. We are removing the top and frame together so we can work on it off the car and provide better shots when we go to disassemble the convertible top from the frame.
This part of the job surprisingly turned out to be pretty straight forward. There were only a couple tricking spots on the top frame which was undoing the tension cable and spring on the outsides of the frame, and removing the soft top fabric from the bow retainer.
The first step in this job was to get the seats removed to getter better access to the back deck. From there we removed the rear carpet to access the rain rail retainers. This rain rail connects to the soft top and channels water down to the drain ports in the quarter panels. Then we cut out the rear window and started removing the rain rail retainers. Once the retainers were removed, we could start separating the rain rail from the MX5 body. We also removed the trim side panels to access the 6 bolts holding the convertible top frame into the body. With those bolts undone, we finally could remove the soft top and frame from the Miata. In the next video we will be removing the top canvas from the frame.

Thanks again guys. This is very helpful for me, I will be transferring the top from my totalled 03 52K miles to my 01. Think I'll start by removing the raggedy ole top on the 01 😎

ello mate. where are you based. i have some seals that need to be replaced on my Volvo c70 convertible 2005 nobody will touch it very frustrating. The seal is located on the rear dec (roof compartment) :(
