Hey folks! Welcome back to another episode of Underdog Garage! Today we are disassembling the soft top and frame off our 2003 NB Mazda MX5 Miata.
In this 2nd part of the convertible top replacement series, we have the frame and convertible top off the car. Now that it's off, we are going to pull the soft top from the frame and get it ready for the replacement.
First we had to remove the latches from the front of the soft top eventually giving us access to the front edge.. Next we removed the rubber window gaskets sitting on the sides of the frame to reveal the gasket retainers. After unscrewing the gasket retainers from the soft top frame we got access to the rivets holding the soft top to the B-pillars. These rivets drill out fairly easily and quickly. We drilled out the rivets to separate the fabric from the frame. Next we discovered two rivets that sit on the backside of the B-pillar holding the back of the fabric in. Once the rivets were removed, we had access to the spring and tension cables that run along the sides of the soft top. This cable is hooked to the spring and is connected at the front via a rivet. We drilled out the rivet to disconnect the cable and removed it from the tension spring using pliers. Once the cable was loose, we pulled it out through the runner in the soft top fabric. Once the cable was free, we could start working on removing the top fabric that was connected to the bow retainer.
With the bow retainer undone, the convertible top was finally free from the frame.
