Man this brings back so many memories... Oh, the time that we had to fake most everything in 3D rendering.Never actually used Soft Image, that was the dream software, I was using 3D studio and Lightwave back then, gotta say, they weren't too far behind

This speaks to the idea of the risk of closed hardware systems and pricing. they were overpriced and a closed system. If a competitor with an open system and the performance is superior then that basically tanks your market. Pc was cheaper and the software was cheaper and just as good.. so unless they dropped their prices to match then they could compete .. they did for another decade and slowly went out of business...

Advanced NURBS modelling was a form of black magic... and not many mastered it back in the day. *g* Also, stitching spline patches manually is one of the many things I don't miss, lol.

Yep I used to be a demo artist for an east cost reseller :) Ohhh the good old days. I really need to go back to Montreal and eat more of that awesome French Canadian food. Man St Lauran Street was awesome. I think I'm spelling that correctly. I also remember when Avid F'ed up the DS. That was a GREAT system. IMO

Ahh ... What fond memories. .. But no ... Seriously .. Compared to its contemporaries? .. 3DS Max, Maya, even Lightwave and Alias|Wavefront the software ... Softimage was a bit of a PITA to use. .. That database system ... ouch ... lol
@nonsensicalfox
@nonsensicalfox 3 жыл бұрын
I never understood why it couldn't save everything into the database file itself instead of having to create a million different directories and then having the database file point to where those directories are. Another bonus is the "Default DB" and "Delete DB" buttons being right next to each other, which is just absolutely genius

It's weird how much things have changed yet... haven't... Old IRIX version of Softimage from years before I ever got into 3D anything, something I only heard about in passing from my college instructors.. I originally learned on Maya and adapted to use Blender in recent years... Yet so many thing in this are weirdly familiar and make sense..

Later versions? Softimage 3d last version was nr. 4, released in 2001 I think. After that they came up with Softimage XSI. Trimming for example was one of the features not available in early XSI releases. Keep in mind that this software was first released in 1988.

@nonsensicalfox
@nonsensicalfox 3 жыл бұрын
@@NathanDarkson984 no, it's completely seperate. XSI was 3D's replacement, and while initially ported to IRIX, as SGI died off, XSI was mainly only made for Windows
