Best comparison I’ve seen between the 2. I’m in college and now and stuck between software engineering and data science.

What an excellent comparison!! Not only telling about the two fields but also the important aspect of one's own inclination and in the end how to find where one is inclined. Beautiful!!!

For those who like to build solution straight after exploring the problems, got to knowing both, they're so called Data Engineering, DataOps, MLOps.. Somehow they form into a data product lifecycle.

can you explain more why?
@uniforcestelian791710 ай бұрын
I used to be “an ML research engineer” which seemed to be mix of those two, based on your explanation. I developed deep learning models (tensorflow) and continuously increase the accuracy until our boss is satisfied, and then all we need to deliver is the tfmodel. And there are some other sw engineers who take that tfmodel and deploy it. I loved that role because the daily work involves reading a lot of icml cvpr papers and discuss which techniques we will apply.

I recently graduated with a bachelor's in math, and am looking into either software engineering or data science/analytics as a potential career. I'm going to be taking some courses+certification programs at the local community college in Python development (I love Java, but Python seems like it would be more applicable for my current goals) and in SQL to better equip myself for entry-level work in these fields. Thanks for this informative video -- I definitely have a lot to think about! :)

in practice, we write code which goes into production. and more and more we're being asked/required to move towards better and better solutions (argo, design, ci/cd, maintainability, performance, readability) for at least what we do as """data scientists""", there is ability for explore at the end of the day for like algos and transforms which might produce a better result for ur clustering model. but at the end of the day, we're building back end pipelines so that the clients team can pick up said data and make shiny ui's for their customers just very full stack where im at, one project required a bit of extensive bash/*nix, which got much better there, also dovker should have a container managemebt system before k8s, compose is just complexity of a single project

I've spent the last six years of my career writing code to solve problems, but I'm not what you'd call a software engineer. I enjoy writing code as long as the problem gets solved. Thus, it's really hard for me to choose between software engineering and ML engineering. I'm very open to both routes.

I usually do not have ideas about how to build stuff though I am doing a part time as a software dev. I recently started learning data science and it seems i am understanding the concepts better than doing web related stuff. Maybe because it is python related or i might actually have an interest in it... I usually like playing around json files and csv files by getting the data i need and display them using numpy and pandas dataframes and so far it is cool.

The first two considerations make me a software engineer but the last one keeps me confused. I enjoy the merger of different fields! But I surely love building stuff and love coding. Especially when just few keyboard strokes enable me to build so many new things, that excites me a lot.

I am definitely attracted more data science, but I don’t have a masters degree or a PhD and I noticed most Jobs require you to have one or the other or both. It’s unfortunate, because a lot of the data scientists that I have spoken to say that it’s completely pointless because people who come in with either masters degrees or PhD’s, don’t understand data science and it’s something that you don’t need an advanced degree to be able to learn and apply. Software engineering, on the other hand, it’s something that you can do with any kind of college degree under your belt. That’s just too bad

So as someone who eventually one day wants to work in data science is there an entry level job role that one can apply as a starting point and just get promoted/ level up to a data science in time rather than just trying to apply for a data science position from the get go? I dont mind starting at the bottom and working my way up the ladder.

What about ML engineer? If you are just a sw engineer where your project is nothing to do with ML(android developer, embedded engineer etc) learning data science is not that much benefit, imho I found Data science = 80% ML stat+ 20%coding ML engineering = 20% ML stat + 80% coding
