A person who's has a will to address substantial problems likely knows what problems they want to solve and finds what they should be doing on their own. Many many people really don't give a shit and just want to make money and get by comfortably and reliably as an adult. I would think a lot of people watching this very video are in that boat. Trust me, many people in any field only care about what they do to the extent that it puts food on the table and is a necessary function to get other benefits as an adult in life. I'm not trying to imply these people are miscreants or anything either. Some people, once they get deep enough find some satisfaction in what they do. Also, some people may genuinely have a hard time finding a problem they really care about that is also lucrative. Like they really want to focus on helping people, but not medically and social work is just...brutal and super low paying so they'd really rather pick something else they can tolerate and pays much much better.

Here's a breakdown of the thought process: Doubt and uncertainty: The person is questioning whether their decision to pursue a data science career was the right choice. Seeking peace of mind: They want to alleviate the discomfort caused by this doubt. They desire a sense of certainty or closure regarding their career path. Pursuing a data science PhD: The individual decides to enroll in a data science PhD program. This choice is made to address their doubts and find peace of mind. Peace of mind in both cases: The person believes that by pursuing a data science PhD, they will have peace of mind regardless of whether their initial career choice was right or wrong. If their choice was right, they will have further validation and confidence. If it was wrong, they will have clarity and closure, knowing they explored the field in-depth.

that's exactly my situation as well! I'm at the first year of data analytics, which I guess is somewhat different from data science, but more or less we're in the same field, and the most prominent factor pushing me away when I hade to take my decision was actually the fear of working in an environment like the one you described. At the moment I'm going on because I think that data are so ubiquitous that I'll be able to find a job with some non profit organizations, maybe public organizations or something like that, where I can really feel I'm making my contribute to society (as trivial as it may sound), where I can help others as much as possible. I would respectfully disagree with 3. Not with the whole point, which is spot on as usual, but with the explanation behind it. I am not among the senior data scientists as well. Been one for over an year and a half in fintech company and now for 6 months in another. And I'm planning to switch back to SWE because of point 3. You are going to constantly learn new things, that is true. But them new things will be about the domain, company hierarchy, project management, business, presentations, justification of ideas in front of 'stupid' people etc. You will have to pick up quickly with those if you want to be a data scientist. Not ml engineer, not researcher, mlops or whatever, I mean data scientist. I don't think you will feel any pressure of the new technologies at all. Let's be real, using the Deep Learning frameworks is easier than riding a bike. Same applies for anything that you will use from the scientific stack, the visualization or dashboard libraries. And those libraries and frameworks don't change often. The latest and fanciest neural nets - you are not going to need them. And you are definitely not wasting time creating something that adds 0 value to the company AS data scientist. And about the math and the stats - you learn them once and you are good to go. They haven't changed for centuries. You will need some Python/R and SQL but compared to the real engineers you will be a baby. And you won't learn good practices. Even if you introduce them no one will care or even notice. So this will result in stagnation. I mean for your coding abilities. As Tina mentioned you ain't gonna be proud of the code you write. And you won't be able to pick up and improve because you will be too busy talking to business, learning about the domain and making presentations. Data Science is a great job, paying well, have significantly less stress than SE, probably the greatest for curious individuals with aspirations in math, data and stats. But if you are passionate about coding, building things, staying up to the date with the latest in the tech, and overall about computer science, Data Science is not your thing. As it's not mine.

Sometimes you can't easily define something directly. Rather, you can eliminate what it's not and get close to the remaining whatever to define that something. AKA "Process of elimination." Yes, there are many paths to becoming a Data Science, but there is no easy path. An open-mind that is inquisitive is key. I agree, there is no end point to learning new mathematics, statistics, AI models etc. 3 days is only going to give you enough time to understand the problem they're asking you to solve. I like to use an approach of 3 days gives you X, while 3 weeks gives you X+, and 3 months might give you X++. You're giving dangerous answers after only 3 days. Every Data Scientist needs to train their business counterparts to understand what we do and what are valid questions. One way to tell that person what they're getting in 3 days has an error of 50%, and more time brings that down. Since they might be able to guess better than 50%, you're warning them on the limits of quick Data Science. Often, I've been asked to figure out the reasons for something that we don't have the data to pinpoint the correlations etc. This means that new processes need to be implemented to collect the relevant data that a DS can use to find answers. This take time and commitment, that is rare today where quick answers are embraced.

Hey guys! This is actually a surprisingly common scenario. Many people go into STEM for the excitement of learning new things and applying analytical methods in a creative way to solved problems. It also turns out that a lot of the lab jobs in the US are not like that, and often lab based STEM majors feel like they don’t have an outlet for creativity. This is where the desire to swap to tech comes in, as SWE and data science are all about learning and creative problem solving using science and engineering. Tech companies understand this flow and many of them have apprenticeship programs which help transition people who are professionals in other fields that have done some self-taught programming (through online classes or a boot camp) into the tech field. My company, Dropbox, is an example of a company that has this program and I believe most of the major tech companies do as well. We also put effort into recruiting people from boot camps as well. In general, people with a non-coding STEM background tend to be very successful in these type of apprenticeship programs.

One of the rarely mentioned points (and you bring it up): most of what you build is temporary and one time use stuff (code) to answer a question, do an experiment, clean up some data, generate some graphs, etc. So, if you have a streak to build immaculate things and perfect them over time (which I have the itch for) then you may feel tired of constantly building imperfect "non-elegant" solutions and then scraping most of it later on.
