I’m a compulsive gambler in recovery. Compulsive gambling is such an awful addiction because it’s the one addiction where you can actually win your drug. You don’t always lose. And it’s an addiction that defies logic. It makes no sense, it made no sense, I knew it was killing me. Couldn’t pay my bills, lights shut off, no food for 3 full days until I got paid, etc…That’s how I lived for years. It’s a compulsive and progressive illness-I lost all control. I would literally stand at the ATM swearing to myself that I wouldn’t put my card in. And yet, I would. Over and over and over. It makes you lose faith in yourself. So many broken promises I made to myself - I had to finally surrender to it after 20 years. I started attending Gamblers Anonymous. I haven’t gambled since June 10, 2017.

Like you I’ve lost way too much money to the casinos. We remember the high points and try to forget the low ones. In November 2019 I was in Las Vegas for business, didn’t take much money to gamble and left my credit and atm cards at home. On my last night there I hit several slot jackpots and found myself up over $4000. When I woke the next morning (hungover) I vowed to never gamble again figuring ending on a high point would be a good thing. I have not gambled one penny since then. I’ve even made two trips to Vegas and stayed in Casino Hotels. I’m over it. I wouldn’t buy a powerball ticket even if the jackpot was $10 Billion. Nearing retirement I find my checking account, stock account and 401K full of assets - I have more than enough to live well, have no debt whatsoever and will leave plenty to my children. Am I bragging? Somewhat. The point is YOU CAN STOP GAMBLING! The casinos, their wonderful restaurants and especially their hosts have one purpose in life: to separate you from your money. GA helps for some but in the end it is your will power that matters. I wish you the best in life, friend!

We had the mob at our door, we would find him out front passed out, if he won at the race track on Saturday we would have to move the car so he could not go to the trotters. It was a crazy life, honestly I don't know how we did it. The truth is I miss him so much, he was so brilliant - he contracted polio as an infant and grew up sep. from his family, he came home at 15 and started then. I initially thought that this might not be so interesting but it absolutely was. I really liked Don and I'm so glad that he at least was happy for the beautiful 9 years with Donna. Some people can go their entire lives not knowing what true love is. So sad that she died but she is still with him. It's pretty amazing that a psychic knew exactly how much spending money his wife used to give him and it was the exact amount. His childhood was sad but he would seek the adrenaline to "get away". From a go-cart to a Harley to fast cars. Then the rush from gambling came along and it's easy to become addicted no matter how much I've heard people deny it. I love the photo of him as I see each line on his face tell a story. What a cool and interesting guy and I could have listened to him talk about his life so much longer. He was so appreciative that Mark took the time to stop and talk to him. We all need to do that more often and he's right....everybody is always in a rush and "congested" in this cluster-fuck of a new millennium. I love the stories older people have to share and hope to see you, Mark, interview more old-time gamblers.

As much as I love living in Las Vegas, it’s always broken my heart that our slot machines contribute to putting people in this situation. I hope he gets help.
@KayFabe873 жыл бұрын
The slot machines are inanimate objects which are not capable of putting people into any situations. It is the choices made by those who feed money into those machines that determine their results. Millions of people gamble as a form of entertainment and the overwhelming majority are not in a similar situation. The gambling appears to be the effect and not the cause of the issues highlighted in this interview. The horrible experiences of his childhood occurred long before he ever saw his first slot machine.

You have to be a people person if you want to deal in the casino's and not just be there collecting a pay check and ignoring customers. I won't bore you with the simplicity of why a gambler would question, why "Don" would play slots when Casino's them selves have admitted that they're the worst odds in the house. Phil Ivey would be a fantastic interview as he has won many World Series of Champ bracelets, plus his sacndle with his edge cutting with Baccarat with two different Casino's would be a great insight to the current underbelly of gambling. I've only watched about 5 minutes so far. Had to comment. This man went through some absolutely horrible experiences growing up. No one should be treated the way he was. OMG I'm in shock.

My father was a gambling addict. My parents divorced because of it and my mom had to raise me and my siblings single. Ten years later, my father is back in my life. Took him hitting rock bottom, GA, and celebrating recovery and a belief in God and Christianity, for him to change. But I still see it in his eyes and he's told me its a daily battle to overcome his vices and cravings.

If he’d like to talk about it I’m definitely looking for more gamblers.
@cowardlykeaboardwarrior50363 жыл бұрын
@@SoftWhiteUnderbelly Sure I will bring it up to him. Thanks for your interest. Another interesting aspect about addiction is the genetic factor. I choose not to gamble because I, like my dad, have impulse control issues. I feel this 'pull' when gambling, where nothing is enough. Almost an anger when I lose and a drive to make up for it. It feels primal and uncontrollable. After blowing my whole pay check (1,500$ in a few hours) I vowed to never gamble again and haven't been in a casino for about five years. It makes me wonder if theres an addiction gene or a predilection for Impulse control disorders that runs in families. Anyways, keep these videos up. It is good to see this side of humanity.

Don seems like a sweet man with a broken heart and spirit... :( I worked in a casino for many years. If you want to see real sadness spend some time in a casino. Gambling is an addiction like drugs or alcohol (and oftentimes, these habits go hand-in-hand). It's a diversion from reality - where one looks to fill the void in their spirit. Of all the sad stories I have to share the one that sticks with me the most was the day when a husband came storming into the casino screaming his head off. It was about 6 or 7am. He was calling for his wife. He sounded desperate and angry. He screamed her name as he looked for her and yelled, "We are losing our HOME because of my wife's gambling! We are LOSING EVERYTHING!!!" He found his wife sitting at a Blackjack table. She didn't even look up. He cried frantically and plead with her to leave, but she stayed in her seat, staring at the table, waiting for play to resume. She stayed. He was escorted out.
