While this knife is not the end all/be all, I found it to be very good for certain things. To be honest, this knife really is a combat utility knife, well suited for a soldier. I can readily find these for around $150, and for that money, it’s really difficult to beat it for its purpose. The steel, well it’s not MagnaCut, but the knife came out before it existed. It’s fairly rust resistant, so that’s one less concern for a soldier. It’s a good size, with a blade stock size that keeps it fairly lightweight for the overburdened soldier, yet plenty stout for use and abuse. It’s usable in a number of grips and is pointy as needed to use defensively. But it’s not single minded in purpose, able to safely do many utility tasks like opening MREs and other packaging, cutting tape or cordage, etc. I can’t really think of anything cheaper that could the same things better. Maybe a Cold Steel SRK of some kind? Their sheaths are noticeably worse and the kraton handles are not liked by everyone. A Gerber Strongarm is tough, but the steel is terrible for edge holding. Again has rubbery handles, but the sheaths are pretty good. Benchmade Nimravus is made for the same purpose, but Benchmade has discontinued all but the tanto blade. I’m no fan of the aluminum scales for a fixed blade and it’s sheath is certainly not as good and it’s damn expensive. The old Al Mar SERE Operator is nearly the same class, but pricier and long gone. Thats about it without spending a lot more, or having a heavier knife. I guess if you have a lot more money, and don’t mind a few more ounces of weight, a Spartan Harsey Difensa would be nearly ideal. It’s just that now you have an 11.5oz knife that’s over $400. Knives, like most things in life, are a compromise, and this one I find suitable for my needs. It wouldn’t be my choice for a survival knife, hunting knife, or woods knife. Fact is, it’s really an updated SOG Seal Pup Elite made in USA of better materials. It’s twice the price, but for me, the much better materials and sheath, made in USA with higher quality, is absolutely worth it.

Everything I could think to comment, as I was watching your video, you said in your conclusions. You must have been reading my mind. Sometimes a slim knife is more comfortable/handy to carry than a thicker one, especially if you don't anticipate needing it for any heavy duty tasks. Great review as always, Fredrik. Thank you!

I had bought a SOG Pillar stamped "Studies and Observation Group" (=SOG), and I had to return it because the tip had a manufacturing defect: it deviated very slightly to the left. The knife you present is also stamped "Studies and Observation Group", and watching the first 2 minutes of your video it seems that its tip also deviates very slightly to the left. Is this just an impression? It's hard to see on video. Following the return of my knife, I received a new one stamped "SOG". And it was perfect. Have other owners of this Pillar knife also noticed this? Thank you for your answers.

i think u would love the hardcore hammers supernaturalist and it would be a great vs against your fenix, anika, toporsib, sibbulat, gran forsbruks. also the lt wright kamrat, the dawson knives mojave IN MAGNACUT and white river knives firecraft 7 will probably be up your ally. if u want some new gear these will make great reviews

I concur about the knife thoughts. White River especially makes some wonderful knives. I really like my LT Wright knives, too. I have very little ax knowledge. :-)

Thank you for the input! I've never even heard of the Hardcore Hammers Supernaturalist, but I'll check it out! I have no experience with LT Wright, White River or Dawson Knives, but I do know about them. I actually sent Dawson Knives an e-mail some time ago, asking about a specific model, which I can't remember the name of right now (was it perhaps the Helmsman Sword?). I'm very curious about testing any knife in MagnaCut (I do have a pre-order for a Bark River Knives Bushcraft Scout in that steel).

hi all. i have this knife and love it but dont like the sheath sits to high for my liking. anyone know for a better sheath that fits. something with a belt loop to take it out of my ribs lol. leather or anything. want it for camping and bushcraft. thanx
@PTSDexplosion2 жыл бұрын
I personally don't know of a sheath in particular that is compatible with this knife but being a kydex sheath you can attach a g-clip or kydex belt loop attachment instead of the one they send. Also if you own a Cold Steel knife, their sheaths have a removable belt loop that hangs low and is quite nice, I'm planning to swapping the one from my cold steel to this one once I get it. By the way does the spine of this knife throw sparks on a fire steel?

As a user, I really hate finger choils on knives, however I really appreciate sharpening choils. Sharpening choil is so Important for me, that I may skip a knife just for that and look, for another knife.I Could accept It's absence, in a scandi grind knife lika a Mora but it's a "must" feature for me, on the knives that I use more. nice review as always! Keep it up!
@PinkG102 жыл бұрын
I understand what you're saying, both about a sharpening choil and in terms of finger choils. Finger choils will always split the users into two different camps - those who love it and those who hate it. I also agree about not wanting any choil-design at all for scandi-knives such as a Mora. Thank you! I'll try to keep it up and improve on the video-formula as well!

Why the hell did they put the first screw in the finger groove? They should have put it before it ! That would be very uncomfortable if used without gloves.

The Seal Pup knife was always more show than go, imo. Tip is the weakest I have come accross. If you want a man's knife try a Glock FM78, then try how tough it is.

Got one when they first dropped. Not sure if there was a problem with the first batch but the edge retention was terrible, got a replacement blade & had the same terrible edge retention. My tops silent hero in 1095 was holding a better edge. Sent it back & never bothered getting another, put me off SOG tbh. Also not a fan of finger choils on smaller knives. "ba TOON ing" 😂 I do enjoy the way you pronounce it.
@PinkG102 жыл бұрын
An experience like that can def. put anyone off a specific brand or maker, no doubt! The edge retention of this exact one seems ok so far, but I really have to put it through some more work to make a more qualified assessment. I can understand how you feel about finger choils on smaller blades, since the actual cutting edge can become quite limited. Haha, yeah, you'll have to live with me pronouncing a lot of words in strange and funny ways, lol. :p
