Love your content. I'm a Air Force paramedic and I have a pare of these and would absolutely not recommend them had it for about a week used the O2 wrench once instantly broke and handle fell apart. supper disappointed cause i loved the folding mechanisms on them. contacted SOG they refused to replace it and then when i left a review they took it down. Defiantly stick to my X-Shears and if you need extra tool go with the raptors.

I just think the X-Shear is the most realistic for anyone who actually needs to use them. The Raptors are great for civilian kits, they’re just not as handy as the cheaper throwaway shears. X-Shear for life!

@@Andy-rp3eeI think what he meant was that he likes the x-shear better. The raptors are good for civilian kits, but that throwaway shears are more handy. I’m assuming because you can use them once and then just throw them away. I could be wrong though. That’s what I got from his comment.

Bro. The raptors are unbeatable. Mine have cut through damn near everything on scenes
@Andy-rp3ee2 жыл бұрын
@@SergioPena20 yea I think I misread that. While I don’t love breaking my raptors down to clean, but at least it can be done. I have a pair of the xshears as well, and as far as cutting they both work well. I keep the raptors on my radio strap and haven’t found unfolding them to slow me down much (or the others on my department using them).

Thanks for the review; helps for someone whose always trying to optimize trauma kits. I'm not employed as a professional, but took a number of courses to first responder level over time,. I was always working as an ANIMATOR 60-80 hours week, especially in CA working in Silicon Valley . FAVORITE COURSE ---> Wilderness Emergency Response, taught by a veteran Ski Patrol guy; also C.E.R.T. training thru my local Fire Department. I had earlier training as teen in swimming 1st aid, and later for responding to demonstrations & riots in college. Gotten informal training from veterinarians and a friend who was a S.E.A.L. team medic. I ended up using most of my skills on the critters - sheep, horses, ducks, dogs - living on a ranch for four years! Well then I was called to help my disabled brother for the last decade of his life. I have used SOG and GERBER multi-tools for decades, and find those useful for everything. On the ranch I used them a dozen times a day, EVERY day. Lots of wire and bits of metal to be dealt with. Making up first aid kits for friends and for the school where I taught until 2019, I used mostly mass market shears. For my own bug-out bag I got the X-shear, for its sturdiness and affordability. But if I was going to be doing rescue daily, I think I would want to have the Raptor as a backup or "force multiplier" in addition to regular-common shears.

Appreciate the review. As a bedside nurse I find myself needing shears to cut tape and packaging. I bought the Raptors, but they just are not as handy as the cheaper trauma shears. The extra weight and the time spent unfolding and refilling them just take too much time. The pair you reviewed seems like they would have all the same issues.

I agree, the X Shears are great. I even open them up as wide as they can and use the blade as a knife to open EKG paper rolls or supply boxes. And they have stayed sharp for over the year I’ve had them and I use them for something every shift, mostly cutting paper but they work great on everything from paper to jewelry to multiple layers of clothes at once and even thick leather work boots. I have yet to find something reasonable that they won’t cut.

I have a set of Raptors gifted to my by a paramedic student I precepted. She had them engraved with my badge number, which is cool. Still prefer X-Shears though. Raptors are too expensive to risk losing or having stolen. Plus, all the nooks and crannies for blood and viscera to attach themselves, even after a Virox bath. Leatherman uses anti-tamper screw heads so you can’t even disassemble them for a thorough clean. I keep my Leatherman tools at home or in the SUV. On the job, it’s X-Shears and a (cheaper) multi-tool for me.

You should buy yourself a set of security torx bits, they dont come in handy very often but in cases like this when they do it's very useful, and you can buy a cheap set that is "good enough" for around $10 (wont come with a hex bit driver this is assuming you already have one of those somewhere)

Just interested if most 02 cylinders in the US still require a wrench or spanner to open them? In New Zealand all 02 cylinders come with either a black knob you simply turn on and off by hand, or come with a built in INHALO regulator. Thanks

Same in Europe. No need for O2-wrench here, as all cylinders have a hand-operated handle. I think this is a clear advantage in daily use.

Used these on a trauma alert dude who had complete break of his right wrist and 3rd degree burns on his entire right side and these held up really well, cut through thick jeans and jacket + shirt pretty well. They do what they’re supposed to, only downside was the price for me.

Although I appreciate folding shears like the Raptors and the SOG. I feel the primary component being the shears is the the most important. The folding aspect is convenient for storage but that is also a hindrance in my opinion. The X shears are my go to trauma shears. They cut as well if not better than the other two and that is all I care about an emergency situation. As far as the other tools I alway carry a mult-tooll of some sort to address any other issues. l
@legallyfree2955 Жыл бұрын
The XShears do cut better than the Raptors, I don't have the SOG to compare, that said the Raptors cut perfectly adequately, certainly better than the cheap shears usually found laying around. I dont think anyone should be unhappy with either but if your using them all the time the Raptors are harder to clean and that's a problem.
@preacher17762 жыл бұрын
One thing that I found immediately, on usage, was that the Leatherman didn't have a guide on the sheers. You're standard trauma sheers have a little platform on the leading edge of the sheer so you don't cut soft tissue. The SOG has them, plus other options, and the Leatherman doesn't. Additionally, and this is about 6:57, the two button issue is actually kind of an issue. Sucks trying to, ok, press one button...SHIT....now there's another button to depress to secure your sheers. Also, why doesn't the Leatherman sheer actually have some additional medical devices? The SOG does. Mileage may vary, but, I'm finding the Leatherman's to be good shears that are compact...I think there are others that are better for IFAK and med-kit use.

Best to have a more dedicated shear and a multi tool. Cant have both effectively in one tool. Rather than a janky combo thing that doesn't do either well. I carry a raptor and swisstool mxbs personally. I own 3 leathermans and like the swisstool over the leatherman mult tool for paramedic stuff but carry the leatherman off duty.

Great review - really helpful as I’ve been considering buying either the SOG or the Raptor for occasions where it look out of place carrying a real scissor… I was leaning towards the SOG because they make it where the scissor blades are powdercoated black, but now im leaning more towards buying the Raptor! I got the SOG Parashears the day they were announced, and have been using them on and off for a few years now. I really don't like them that much, especially compared to the Raptors and X-Shears. One of the biggest complaints about the Raptors is how hard they are to clean, and the ParaShears are just worse in that regard in every way. Additionally, the window punch on the ParaShears is nothing short of moronic. Having actually tried to use it to break a window, there is almost no way to get an effective grip on the tool, without puttting your fingers in a position that risks smashing your knuckles on the window. The placement of the window punch, as well as the folding 'feature' of it makes me think it was designed as an afterthought by someone who maybe had never used one before. It's honestly just a useless part of the tool, and you're more likely to hurt yourself than sucessfully break glass with it. That being said, I think there are a few good features. Mostly I agree with all of your thoughts: the way they fold is cool, and mechanical advantage is probably the best feature; no pocket clip is disappointing though, tweezers are a nice inclusion but generally inferior to standalone ones. The bottle opener is a kind of perplexing... why is it even included? Same with the awl and saw. I'd rather see those tools removed and have upgraded tweezers and screwdrivers instead. Overall, just a mid tool with an unjustified pricetag. My adivce: just buy Raptors or some X-Shears and a normal Leatherman.
