I never tire of listening to the MJQ. There is always so much going on!! Four jazz genius playing untouchable jazz with great feeling, empathy, and swing, great soloing AND ensemble work. What's left? NOTHING!! To me the MJQ was perfection. No other group comes close.

I could not agree more with your comment .. (although 11 years ago) I still feel the MJQ were the finest in their interpretation of modern cool jazz.. ... a jazz journalist once describe them back in their heyday (60s ...( as music your grand parents would listen to and enjoy).. MJQ was perfection.. Harvey Perkoff

I'm not a drummer, but I'm always impressed by Connie Kay. He just seems to lay down such a perfect percussive canvas for everyone else in the group to paint on.

If American people think that Jazz is just know in the US an Europe, they are wrong. In Mexico there's a select group of people in every mayor city, that adores Jazz. The MJQ with this great and elegant musicians keep breaking our hearts. I, in particular, love the way John Lewis can be so respectful to Milt Jackson, that he stays in the underground while Milt plays. Jazz is the most sensitive art that moves me. Love it! And, I remember my dad's words: "Just good music is permanent".

I got into jazz in the early 1960s, and never quite got over the groups I listened to like the MJQ, Coltrane, Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Monk, and others. I had the good fortune to see and listen to them clubs in Greenwich Village, the East Village and other parts of NYC then, and my jazz taste was set forever.

I've been a devoted MJQ fan since I was a teenager (Heard Fontessa when I was fourteen, 1955). I've seen them perform in outdoor concerts, nightcubs and concert halls. For some reason, I think, they always sound better on their recordings.

This is really a simple tune so no wonder many refer to it as elevator music. Yes it comes from the Swing era and was written for an operetta so again no wonder why it's so pedestrian sounding. Anyway, not for everyone but if you like it you like it :)
