In the beginning ponies was a joke, a literal meme that was posted to piss off the mods on websites. Improbably some people, mostly younguns, actually watched the show that they saw in the memes. People talked about the values that the show brought up, people discussed in earnest the nature of the characters and the world they saw on the screen. The earnest nature of the fandom that sprung from a spiteful meme can not be overstated. A shared experience in a world that was rapidly splintering, a stable moral framework in a world where everything was changing, and the simple statement "friendship Is magic".
