The thing about drinking calories is so true. I've had people say to me "oh I could never have a frap or boba tea, so many calories" well guess what, sometimes I want a sweet treat in liquid form. It's fine

Honestly, I get the don’t drink your calories thing… If, for whatever reason, you are trying to cut calories in a healthy manner to a healthy level for a personal reason. Like I get it if an athlete is on a cut. I get it if you realize that the majority of your sugar is coming from soda and maybe you should drink more water to improve your general health. I get it if you realize that you’re drinking too many Frapuccino’s in a day and maybe should cut back and you’ll sleep better at night. Like I get it for reasons outside of just lowering the number of calories. But I think a lot of people don’t know how to think that way anymore.

@Marie Zimmerman or if you're one of those people who's literally never thought about the calories in their drinks I guess. 99% of what I drink is tea, water, or black coffee; so it's not an issue

@Rumade Yeah, most of what I drink is black coffee with a splash of oatmilk or water, so having a frappuccino or boba to me is like having any other dessert: a once in a while treat. I’m not having it every day, I treat it like cake or ice cream where I’ll get it on a special occasion or at the end of a tough week or something.

I feel like I understand this statement if it's coming from like a medical standpoint. So I'm diabetic and we have to watch what we put into our bodies extremely closely. I have never had a Frappuccino in my entire life because of the fact that the amount of sugar in these types of drinks makes me extremely ill for the entire day. It isn't the fact that I'm scared of the sugar [which I will admit is sometimes the case with certain things but not this one] I'm just trying to watch out for my health. I've had people react to this fact in many ways some just think I'm overreacting and get the "it's a Lil treat once in a while it's not gonna kill you" like it's weird. I remember my uncle took me to get some groceries once and there was a Starbucks there since he insisted on buying me some after i refused a couple of times i ended up accepting to be polite and ordered something off the menu but made sure it was a small size so i wouldn't get too sick. He ended up changing the size to large and i didnt know about it till he handed my drink to me. Well i felt extremely ill that entire day and i understand that was his way of showing affection and i really appreciate him for that the outcome doesnt change. Btw i did explain to him my reasoning for declining his Intial offers but he ended up dismissing my explanation and kept persisting. In short, everyone has a different system and its ok if someone's body can't handle certain things like this but it's never ok to shame someone for it no matter what side you are on just let people have their own opinions the end.

I used to weigh out all my food and track macronutrients while trying to lose weight. I felt so anxious and guilty all the time that I actually started regularly crying when I prepared food. The guilt and fear around food was awful. I would actually go off and eat nothing but junk food for days because I needed to soothe the emotional pain, then feel horribly guilty for failing. My relationship with food is a lot better now. I don't overeat junk food or nutritious food anymore, and I don't obsess over calories and macros. I check to make sure I get enough protein for strength training, eat plenty of vegetables, and move forward. I feel really proud of myself because now I don't cry when I prepare food or go grocery shopping.

I personally HAVE to be watching or reading something while I eat, otherwise I won’t eat. If there isn’t something to take my mind off of the food I’m eating, it bugs me. It’s really hard to eat if I don’t have something to distract me, especially if it’s a texture I have a hard time with.

What's important to remember is that every person is different. I too need entertainment to eat. I have been working on trying to use my entertainment to help me pace my meals as I used to struggle with that. I would eat so fast. For me, a TV show becomes a way to say okay, let me try and take at least this entire show to eat. Or let me take two bites per short and then put the utensils down for a short.

Yeah I usually watch something while I'm eating simply because I can't just sit there and eat. I can only do that when I'm eating with someone else, and even then if I'm with my family I usually still use my phone to show my brother images (he does the same thing). I just need to have something else on my mind as well as eating, which watching something or talking with friends does

This is good advice for people that aren’t struggling with food addiction and overweight. When we’re so obsessed with eating, and we need to lose pounds for our health, we NEED to think of ways to cut the calories. Weather that’s cutting cream and sugar in our coffee or choosing the apple over the Cheetos. Then maybe one day a week have a snack or a meal that gives us that reward for working so hard during the week! I completely agree with balancing a diet and not depriving ourselves so completely that we just give up and it ruins everything. When we start out on this journey it’s important to try to create new habits for ourselves that get us in the right frame of mind to get healthy. The more bad snack foods that are wormed into our diet, and viewed as “ok”, the more we’re going to want them. Now when we’ve reached that goal, then I think it’s okay to work those foods back in, because we have to eat in a way that’s sustainable for the long haul ❤

I completely agree. I lost over 80 pounds and went from extremely overweight/obese to a size M and healthy bmi. Now I can be more lenient and not worry too much about calories, macros or drinking calories. Buuuut this advice would have definitely made me stop losing weight because I needed to hold myself accountable. For people who need to watch what they eat or lose weight for health reasons, some of this advice could make them fall off the wagon and binge eat.

most definitely! i’ve been trying to recover from an ED for almost a year and while some of these message like this creators are great in the beginning, it’s better to also be mindful that some foods may just be best left on the shelf than buying them and trying to healthify them at home. i did that a lot and while it was fun and nice to not morally bar some foods and make them “hunger crushing combos” i got tired of buying them in the first place! it’s also better to allow your tastebuds to adapt to different things that aren’t as stimulating as a lot of those foods have been designed to be highly addictive than it is to provide your body anything else. these foods are not as horrible to never touch again - but it’s definitely something to consider when wanting to buy “treats” more often than you need to, especially if you have certain goals in mind.

I like that you address overeating and over restricting. I am aa recovered binge/purge/restrictor, and all the advice I see for healthy mindset eating is “don’t worry about it! Just eat what you want!” And I don’t know how to be like “no. If I eat what I want I’ll empty the fridge and that’s just as bad for me mentally as not eating for a week.”

I have ADHD and autism, and my whole life I've been given dieting advice that only made things worse. Plus even the not harmful advice doesn't work for me. For example, I can't really tell when I'm hungry and even when I can I can get distracted and forget to eat. So I have a loose schedule for eating (aka after I wake up but before I start any tasks, and never more than 6 hours in-between meals, etc) to help avoid binging a huge meal that makes me sick after not eating the entire day. I also have to be watching something, or reading, etc, while eating bc eating can be very unpleasant for me sensory wise. Reading or watching something can distract me from any minor unpleasant sensations so I can eat more. It also helps me stay focused and actually eat until I'm full rather than get distracted and leave my food half eaten and still hungry. I do pay attention to if I'm getting enough carbs, protein, and fat, but literally nothing else. I counted calories my entire life, consistently ate less that 1800, and I'm still fat. All that did was make me anxious, not healthy. Health is what's important to me now, and for me that means being fat.

Her advise is geared more towards folks with ED. During COVID I stopped tracking my calories and gained 20lbs of fat. During that time, my portion size didn't necessarily increase, I just thought eating a little bit of this and that won't hurt. It is only recently that I lost a lot of it. Had to cut off junk calories and limit it to two meals a week.

i definitely think counting & using tools like measuring cups & nutrition facts are really helpful as well!! i noticed that prior to me using measuring cups, whenever i eyeballed portions i regularly either came up short or overrate on things because i never understood portion sizes. i have a looooonf history of never eating enough and my family doesn’t measure while cooking, so i picked up that habit… but found i never really knew how much i wanted to actually eat. i stopped counting calories for the moment because it was getting bad for me but i’m super glad i know way more about macros now. i regularly use measuring cups and spoons to make sure i’m not skimping myself out on food, plus allow me to modify sizes as i eat. i don’t think people often realize that a lot of things like scales and trackers can be helpful if you allow it to be.

Your videos are wonderful ❤️ I'd never been able to lose weight (I was gaining wait uncontrollably, and it was starting to affect my quality of life) until I changed my relationship with food. With the guidance of a nutritionist, I started out by counting every micro calorie I consumed. It's been just over a year, I've lost nearly 40 lbs, I'm feeling much healthier, and I no longer need to count every calorie. I still keep my scale around for things I tend to overdo it on, but I have definitely developed a much healthier relationship with food and my body 🥰

It's so hard to start when I get told calorie counting is good, then told it was bad, then told eating only nutritional food is good and getting guilted for eating less nutritious food. It's so hard bc I have a food addiction and if I have something small like a piece of cake I can't control myself and eat more than I should. But I don't want to ban myself from that kind of stuff and create an unhealthy mindset.

I really struggle with mindful eating because having a meal while watching some show I enjoy it's one of my greatest pleasures! I did do it for a while, and it definetly made me feel more satiated and could enjoy my meal more, but it's hard to figth the habit of watching something while I eat, specially with some shows that I really like. It's OK, I have been improving in other ways. You don't have to be perfect to improve and if you fail it's not the end of the world you just have to keep triying! For me that's the biggest advancement in my relationship with food, there's no "oh, I failed the diet/eat something I said I wouldn't/had to much... Screw it, it's over now..." If I fail one or two days, or a week, or a holiday comes by and it's super hard not to splurge... I will do better again sonner rather than later! It's about not bringing yourself down and continue triying.

The only "never drink your calories" advice I would give is to not drink your food you'd otherwose chew unless you have a medical condition that makes you do that - I am referring to those meal replacement drinks. I still wouldn't say to never ever consume them, but it's certainly not the best for you to replace an entire meal per day with one (and it's super pricy on top as well). Solids and fibers are really important!

All of these are true except using my phone really helped me eat while I had and was getting over orthorexia and anorexia. If you need to distract yourself to be able eat/eat the amount you need to, that's totally okay. Being "present" while eating was not enjoyable and just made me fixate more on how I didn't want to eat it or how my mind and body were trying to say "no" even though that food was what I needed. But do whatever ultimately helps you with your relationship with food/getting over ED!

During 2019-2022 I have been struggling a lot with food and my body image, when I first started being conscious about my body, I have been eating little to no food. I would count my food intake and calories and would workout excessively to burn it off. In 2022 I've stopped working out because face to face classes started but my relationship with food never change. I would still be eating less than my peers. But this year I joined taekwondo and been exercising a lot lately and my relationship with food had quite change a bit. Thr proportion of food in my plate has increasingly changed. I have been eating fairly a lot these past few months. My family is proud of me for finally adding a few calories and nutrients in my diet. But right now I'm being wary of binge eating because I've been eating food uncontrollably and unconsciously but Im still working on that. Because of contents like this, my relationship with food is improving. I am learning a lot on how to manage my food intake and at the same time satisfying my body without putting shame on what I eat. I have a bad habit for picking at whatever’s in front of me while I’m doing something on my computer. Suddenly I’ve gone through 4 cups of water in 30 minutes and all the candy sitting right next to me is gone. It’s honestly quite frustrating as eating food is my one form of constant comfort. I usually only use my food scale when following or halving recipes. Also, the dog really listening like “you know what? You right!” 😂

Personally, I had to pull out the food scale for some weeks to actually grasp the amount of stuff I was eating. I always had a good relationship with food, but I hated the whole idea of having to eat less because of the natural slowing down of my metabolism. Turns out, the "right amount" of food is less than what I was eating, but it keeps me full and happy anyway. Being aware of it helps me to cherish instead of chugging it down. I'll definitely put away my scale when I'll learn to eyeball my new portions better though :)

Yes! I am pregnant and have been nauseated. So I drink much more calories right now. Your nutrition should fluctuate according to your needs ALL the time! Things like illness, activity and travel can be factors that you need to adjust for.

I love this! I think people take the extremes of a lot of advice. For me, “don’t drink your calories” means if I want to achieve goals, maybe I shouldn’t have a 600cal frappe and should opt for sugar free creamer instead, etc. for me it’s about making different choices I can still find happiness in and not feeling deprived. That pup definitely wanted Cheetos lol

I only use my scale for snacks. This way I portion control my between meal food where I can't count or measure. I only do this because I'm type 2 and I want to avoid spikes. Tools are useful depending on the person and their needs.

I spent months working with a food therapist and one of the best moments for me was when I no longer felt the need to track everything I ate. I have been working hard on actively losing weight and at first tracking was necessary to bring me back to a baseline. But now that I'm working on changing body composition more than losing I've found that tracking isn't extremely necessary. It's something that I can do if I feel like I need to reset my mental baseline on portions, but it isn't the be all, end all.

I'm in a good place with my mind (struggling, but not alarmingly) abd definately too lazy to let the scale and measuring an obsession, though it did come in handy to understand how much I'm actually overeating all the time, I had no idea and found so frustrating my weight gain, not understanding it 😅 still in my healthy weight, but knees are starting to let me know it's becoming a bit too much. So scale is helping me to learn to be more balanced with my portions 😅

For those of you who really struggle to eat cos your focusing on the calories your consuming and feeling guit, I found personally that using distractions to start off with was really helpful. I would sit with my sister and watch TV or play video games while I was trying to have a meal or even just a snack. Hope this helps for those who are still struggling to eat more. Sometimes mindless eating is exactly what you need to do in order to improve. ❤

As a person with over 100# to lose and trying to unlearn decades of diets, I disagree with the last one. Eventually I’ll be at that point, but I’m 8 weeks in and measuring is how you learn the portion sizes in the first place.

Intuitive eating will save ur sanity and even ur life. If u struggle with disordered eating there is hope. U can and will break free. Watching youtubers like Abbey Sharp really helped me (can’t speak to her current content but I’m sure she’s still spreading the good word.) good luck friends ily
