First time in China - Shanghai Pudong International Airport - PVG - Arrival Process

First time visit to china, landing at Shanghai International Airport also known as Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
Located about 30 kilometres (19 mi) east of the city center, Pudong Airport occupies a 40-square-kilometre (10,000-acre) site adjacent to the coastline in eastern Pudong. The airport is operated by Shanghai Airport Authority. Shanghai Pudong International Airport (IATA: PVG, ICAO: ZSPD) is one of the two international airports in Shanghai and a major aviation hub of East Asia. Pudong Airport mainly serves international flights, while the city's other major airport Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport mainly serves domestic and regional flights in East Asia.
The airport is the main hub for China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines, and a major international hub for Air China, as well as secondary hub for China Southern Airlines. It is also the hub for privately owned Juneyao Airlines and Spring Airlines, and an Asia-Pacific cargo hub for FedEx, UPS and DHL(reportedly the largest express hub in Asia)
Pudong Airport has two main passenger terminals, flanked on both sides by four operational parallel runways.
Pudong Airport is the world's third-busiest airport by cargo and third-busiest airport in China after Beijing Capital and Hong Kong Airport, fifth-busiest in Asia, and the eighth-busiest in the world. It is also the busiest international gateway of mainland China, with 35.25 million international passengers.
Pudong Airport is connected to Shanghai Hongqiao Airport by Shanghai Metro Line 2 and the Shanghai Maglev Train via Pudong International Airport Station. There are also airport buses connecting it with the rest of the city.

I went there on my trip last month, it was such a shock. As soon as you pass officials less and less non Chinese, taking the subway to hongqiao railway i found that i was the only non chinese at the subway.

I went thru PVG as the longest way home. Hopped off Cathay Pacific and turned around and checked into United Airlines without ever leaving the airport. Imagine flying home from Sydney to Dallas and your route looks like this: Sydney-Hong Kong-Shanghai-Chicago-Dallas

I did toke the subway which is a straight trip. However.... hongqiao railway station is a nightmare. In China foreigners cant buy a ticket at the machines you need to go to the counter. There nobody speaks English and some people choose not to understand the Chinese of a non Chinese. If you need to take the bullet train they are on the top floor. (it did take me 45 minutes to find it after i got my ticket)

You took some risk taking that pic at the immigration counter. When i went to PVG I would not dare take a single pic or video inside the airport. China is an authoritarian police state and they apply laws very arbitrarily. If they want to, they can take you in for no reason and then you won't have a single defense since the law is most decidedly leans towards Chinese people. No matter what you wouldn't take risk of getting in trouble there. I really liked the amazing infrastructure development, Maglev, open areas in China. I was not fond of the humidity and smog though. Since the time i had to go there, although i look back at it as an adventure - i don't think i will go back anytime soon. I was much relieved when i flew back from China.
