She could have been an absolute mega star if she had taken the road to commercial success. We Sohyang fans are so glad she took the path she chose. Kim So Hyang is a fantastic singer and one of several divas of South Korea and this song is a cover, not her piece the original singer is Yoon Bok Hee back in 1979 she is one of South Korea's greats of the past. Many have covered this phenomenal song over the years but I do give it to So Hyang on her rendition of this powerful song. My all-time favorite South Korean singer is Kim So Hyang's best friend Cho Yong Jin aka ALi for many reasons, I do like So Hyang but ALi tops them all. In fact, I prefer to listen to nothing but South Korean singers nowadays, none of this American pop culture is intriguing to me anymore. I actually fell in love with the Korean TROT genre where many singers shine including ALi but the best Trot singer right now is a young lady named Jung Seo Joo she is phenomenal and the guitar and folk genre in Korea is also a big favorite of mine with new rising singers like Heo Hoy Kyung, Shin Jin Hoon, Kim So Yeon wonderful singers and composers. I'll do a few comments off the top of my head in terms of remembering some things others have mentioned about her. One is that she brings the musicians from her church to her singing venues, so if that is the case here, one reason they would be so in synch with her. I believe So Hyang had also mentioned that this was one of her most difficult pieces to sing, and when a reporter went back stage afterwards, So Hyang was in tears, both from her emotion given to the song and her physical condition, as I think she was still recovering from some pneumonia. Oh, and when she speaks to the crowd, it is something like "who comforts me? You do" I paid more attention to the orchestra and choir this time, and how they support her singing. She has a tremendous voice, and utilizes it masterfully.

Hey Bob, thanks for the analysis. What is extra astonishing is that Sohyang is only about 5 foot 4 inches in her stockings and 100 pounds. That she has such a BIG voice is surprising, to say the least! Sohyang stated in an interview on KZbin in mid-October 2023 that she is a 100% self taught singer except for five sessions with Seth Riggs back about 2010. That is it! Some people were just born to sing and Sohyang is the premiere example of that currently on the world stage. And what a fine human being she is, too, doing concerts for charity fairly frequently in churches and concert halls all across South Korea. She used to travel the world with her in law family's Gospel band POS (Greek for "light") and the visited more than 60 countries around the globe. Please keep doing more analyses of Sohyang. Her cover of "I Have Nothing" from the 2015 DMC Festival knocked even the song's writer David Foster right off his feet! He called it _"thrilling!"_ 😮

If I'm not mistaken, this is the one and only time So Hyang has sung this song in public. She didn't believe her health would permit her to sing it again. She battled severe pneumonia eight times between 2016 - 2020). One bout in 2018, nearly ended her singing career. She stated it was the most difficult song for her to sing because she had to figure out where to take a breath.

It doesn't make any sense to assume that because a song is popular, everybody sings it. Her singing career began in 1996 (she was not a child). With the exception of several lessons with Michael Jackson's voice teacher, Seth Riggs, So Hyang is self-taught. I can almost guarantee that you have never heard ANYONE sing this song like So Hyang.

Bob, thanks for this excellent video. You have wandered into the World of Sohyang and there is a treasure waiting for you here. I'll be the one to say it. You were just cheated out of the complete experience from this performance. It IS important that you see her as well as hear her. It is equally important to her that you know what she is saying. She makes songs into messages. In this case and most others, a version with English Subtitles is available. Those videos are identical in content but have the subtitles. With all foreign language reactions, it is valuable to have that quality if possible - especially with Sohyang. Do this: when you have a video in mind, if the subtitles are not present, do a Search on the exact title but append "English Subtitles" to the Search argument. They will pop up. React to that one - it's that simple. Many reactors and fans do not know this fact and therefore have diminished experiences, often without knowing that the complete experience was possible. That is what just happened to you. try it with this performance - and similar future videos. You will be glad you did. Regards.

So-Hyang had cited this as being the most difficult performance she's ever had to prepare for. And I'm pretty sure only part of that was due to the technical difficulty of the song. The lyrics sound like something she could have written herself. I don't think there's another song on earth that so encapsulates her relationship with the audience. As a Christian who grew up singing in church, singing is extremely important to her. It became even more so when she received the news that her cancer treatment had left her infertile. After that, she decided to dedicate her life to beginning comfort to her audience though her music. I posted a link (missing the dot so KZbin doesn't think I'm a fucking bot) in another comment to a translation of the lyrics, and if you read them and think about her life, it becomes clear that this song completely expresses her relationship to music.
